Can we at least expect a discount? Pretty please?? :D

Ah yeah, when I'm setup proper I'll put something in place to offer the arcade and retro masses a discount in the shop and online store.

That's a way off at the moment though :)
I have managed to get in contact with a few companies to arrange to sell their stuff in a retail store in Ireland (eBoy for one and a few Magazines and book companies that have retro game related publications). I should be able to sell Mags/Books and the eBoy stuff at a much cheaper price than you see it online and still make a profit, so everyone will be happy with that. And I'm always working on getting stock at a decent price so that's building up in a secret location. So I'm not just sitting on my butt and dreaming of having a retro store :)

Sure, if its from the Dollar/Euro bin :)

Wonder if competitions would be worth while doing in game shops, Like a SFII Tournament would make much money, say 32 players @ €5 each and have the winning prize be worth like 40 and second place 20, leave you left with 100. Of course you could sell food and drink there aswell to get more. Would it be worth the effort though?

And not to mention Retro gaming tee's that would be exclusively designed for the shop in question...;) just saying

Well Rage have SF2 competition coming up or else had one. I doubt it will work out well. The people that will take it seriously will only play on the proper controls and I doubt that their arcade machine is fitted with Sanwa/Seimetsu buttons. It's also kind of redundant considering how good the fighting game scene is in Ireland and their own tournaments. You are better off going to the fighting game forum and getting involved.

It's always fun absolutely thrashing a SF2 player that thinks they are good because they can throw a fireball :)

Saying that I got beaten by Sera at the weekend by her button mashing skills. My excuse? I was tired, it was the SNES version, my timing was off because it was the PAL verison and I'm going to go for the blame the third party controller excuse to round it up.

Did come first in the Killer Instinct tournament though. I hate the game and don't know how to play it but you know you are going to win when nobody in the tournament can even deal with a wake up cross over :)

However when I'm up against someone that can cross me up then I think to myself 'oh f*ck'. That was exactly what happened to me when I played Enternow in Cidermans :) I know how to play Capcom and SNK fighters and know all the theory but I'm pretty mediocre when it comes to playing them!

Yeah I agree completely, some fairly good fellas around the place.

Thats one thing I actually liked about Screwattack's Iron man of gaming. The mystery game.

If I was running a tournament I'd just have 3 games, one fighting, one driving and a random title then, like Catherine or something. Really make things interesting

It seems to be working for that new retro shop in London, Retro Game Base.
They have a chill out area with a few cabs and run competitions and stuff like that. I'd more likely run things like Saturn Bomberman tournaments and other stuff like that because as Retr0 says, the fighting tournaments in Ireland are already pretty big and popular. No harm in trying it after I've been open for a little while.
My store would be a a little bit bigger and maybe a more modern retro design if you know what I mean than what Retro Game Base have. Check out their Facebook pics to see the store.

As for retro tee's and that sort of thing. I'm already looking around for "makers" to produce stuff for me so I'd be interested as I want to sell more than just games and consoles. A girl in the UK can make me up a load of hama bead 8bit stuff for a good price as I'd like to have some funky art stuff for sale as well.

I've also got a very cool little sample item coming to me in the next week or two that I might be selling as well. I've already agreed wholesale prices with the "artist" so if the sample is up to scratch then its all good.
I think some of the members here might like that little item, and the price I'll be able to offer it/them at. I'll be posting pics of it here when it arrives anyway.

If you had a cabinet outfitted with proper high quality sticks and buttons and space for a few people you'll get the fighting game crowd in to your place no problem. It's just they're very fussy about stuff like controls and lag on HD monitors. I know a few people would kill to play on a SF3 3rd Strike machine again.

Do ya think I'd have crappy stuff? I'm disappointed you think this way of me Retr0 ;)
Not sure I'd have a big enough space to really make a go at that sort of thing on a permanent basis anyway. Maybe 3 or 4 cabs at most in the shop, 2 candies and 2 dedicated woodies maybe.

    Anyway, back on topic.

This arrived today from a seller on adverts.

    dsc2301h.jpg

Needs a clean and was sold "as is", without power and untested. So a bit of a risk.
I just tried it there with a universal power thingy and it seems to work but I cant get it to tune in properly on my CRT or LCD using a known working rf cable (nasty I know). On the CRT it tunes in but is very wavey and unclear (wont tune in at all on the LCD TV). I can just about see the the "Sinclair 1982" text and can also make out the text that I type in but it just wont tune in properly for me.

Anyone any ideas? The basics seem to work as it is booting up.

It should tune in on UHF channel 36 or do a composite out mod :)

    knackered RF modulator?
I know this is going to sound daft , but is the ampage on the universal psu high enough?
    Seemingly speccy PSU is :
    * Input: 240V AC, 50Hz
    * Output: 9V DC, 1.4A
    * Centre Polarity: -ve (inner diameter is 2.5mm)
I'd a problem with an amstrad earlier in the year where it'd power on but knackered video , basically the PSU's voltage and polarity were right but not the ampage , it just needed more power!
if you're stuck I've a proper 48k PSU I can lend you to test (I've only the one so I need it back!)

Hmm, the universal PSU is rated at 3,4,5,6,7.5,9 and 12V @300mA 3.6VA (max).
So the ampage is a good bit lower than required.

sure sometimes you gotta take your chances, bought a Game Gear at a car boot sale for €2 recently.
got it home, stuck in all SIX batteries, and nothing, didnt even power up.
I'll probably get a few quid on ebay for parts, or put it up as a freebie on adverts, so no major loss, but if it had worked I'd have been laughing.

I do it with books all the time on ebay. Listed as hardcover no mention of edition or printing but is in very good condition, never know could be a first edition, first printing and they have been.
Got first edition game of thrones for peanuts recently. Pity the pages look like they bathed in fake tan.:(

I got a crack at 3rd Strike on an Astro-Coin cab a couple of months ago, in London. Sadly, whilst going through single-player waiting for a game, everyone walked by to the SSFIV:AE cabs. Guess what game I ended up playing? It'd be swell to hang around dedicated players and have my game improve beyond the most basic on parries.

I think Retro hits the point perfectly, if you're going to run anything like that, get as much of the FG community involved as possible, otherwise it'll be two-or-three good ones making everyone else regret paying the door-charge.

Arcadecon did something similar in a skwed manner recently, dropping SFIV from the playlist altogether to give everyone a chance, playing Marvel 3 instead. Unfortunately, the Irish FGC, I'm told, are very fond of uMvC3, so they ended up with a similar issue. Mind, that's even before you get into equipment and whatnot. Long ways off, in anyways, I suppose.

I'd have thought that for a set up like RAGE or what Steve has in mind a much more casual approach would be best, make a day of it, free to enter the contest, winner gets a bundle of vouchers for the shop. Costs very little, fills the shop with potential customers, every one has an enjoyable day and its something to tell people about on here and on the facebooks.

Oh, I'd agree totally, but I think you underestimate the FGC's desire to show up and beast one of these things.

true that would be a possibility, i think the 3 game challenge might be a good solution, combined scores in two established classics with a mystery game at the end.

Happy days, should have Super Bomberman 3 winging it's way to me, along with Super Mario Allstars, the one with Super Mario World included.
Bit pricey, 45 with postage, but Super Bomberman 3 is never cheap and that version of Allstars is starting to.climb in value as well.

    Got Bomberman 3 off adverts?
I was going to go for it but 1 and 2 are boxed and I couldn't not have the third one boxed as well. I dont care if the box is falling apart, actually I do.

I was looking at getting the All Stars with SMW too, nearly bought it a few times but then the need to collect as much NTSC as possible bit me. I've since held off buying anything Snes related until I procure a US Snes & make it universal.
