If Francis Street is that place that's covered in antique shops then it's fairly okay, but attracts a lot of addicts and down-and-outs in the laneways. I've never been there at night, but I have a friend who lived near it at Hanover Lane, so I'll ask him about it for you. A bunch of lads did try to mug me on Thomas Street nearby, but they weren't physical and they backed down when I told them they could have my phone if they were willing to dislodge it from their rectums.

The Coombe (and the Dublin 8 are in general) is fine, just avoid backstreet pubs / dark alleys etc. You're far more likely to get mugged on O'Connell St. than on Thomas Street. As usual, stay in company and get a cab to the door if you're coming home at 3 in the morning. By the way Meath St. (off Thomas street) is the home of hidden bargains.
Although usually at 3 or 4 in the morning the place is dead as an egg.

Thanks for the image, JammyC, it just reminded me that I haven't watched a video of Neil deGrasse Tyson speaking about space in about 30 minutes. I have a man crush on that guy.
