Hi, i already know the answer to this question, which is "none of them", and this has probably been asked a 1000+ before but what is the healthiest alcoholic drink to consume on a night out...

I usually drink 10+ large bottles of Bulmers on a Saturday night, which is about 2500 calories alone from drink, not to mention the other negative side affects alcohol has on your training.

I know most beers on the market are healthier than cider, but beer goes to my head a lot quicker :o

I heard Vodka and soda water is about the best you can get, can anyone else recommend another drink, thanks in advance...

Thanks, yeah i've already looked at that ;)

I think Vodka, Ice & Diet Mixer is the best :)

I find that when I drink real beer, 2 or 3 is plenty. Mass produced p*ss however, I could drink all night. I used to brew my own, very cheap and tasty. No use if you want to go to the pub though.
See if they have decent bottled beer and try that.
    Stay out of rounds

    But very expensive.

Your 10 pint bottles is 255.6ml of pure alcohol. The same in 37.5% vodka is 19.2 measures, if you got each with coke in my local it would be well over €100.

Most people say they get drunk more on spirits, but usually since they barely dilute it due to the fact soft drinks are so expensive and in such small portion sizes in pubs. i.e. if you were to dilute your 19.2 measures into 10 pints of diet mixers it you would feel about the same drunkeness as the bulmers. A pint of coke in my local would be €8 based on 200ml bottles, you can just get pints of water between drinks of course.

Mount Gay Rum, mixed with soda, tonic, or even plain water. You can drink it all night without getting too drunk, and the hangover isn't bad either.

I have to say Rubadub, those have been some of the most detailed alcohol related price, carolific and drunkness indicator paper i have ever read.
Have you considered doing a masters or Phd in it? It was brilliant.....
Reckon i'm holding off on the drink till tomorrow night though.

The answer is not "none of them" it's "less of them".

Are you trying to be healthy? If so, don't go out drinking 25 units of alcohol in a night. If not, go have your 10 pints of whatever you want.

Getting pissed is not supposed to be a healthy activity, if you're going to do it, just bloody do it. Don't mind codding yourself into thinking you're somehow making it OK it by having a different form of alcoholic drink.

Oh, just a double vodka and coke zero for me, I'm trying to watch my figure. Jesus wept.

Or another way to put it is that alcohol and training do not go together

If your serious about your training, you wont be worried about missing alcohol!!

And dare i say it....but you can go out on the town and not drink.....but if your mates are as narrow minded as the average irish bar fly, they wont want to be friends with you for long...cause your dull and boring...you might look 100 times better than they do....but your still dull and boring, trust me...ive heard it all!!!!!;)

I'm not disagreeing, but it's not really the point I was trying to get across.

Alcohol does negatively affect your training, but you can train reasonably well and still have the odd drink. Just be honest with yourself about what you're doing.

Ha, defo not asking for that at the bar... will feel bad enough asking for Vodka and Diet Coke ;)

I think people need to observe as to why they want to drink on nights out... i have been training 5-6 days a week for the last 8 years and i have also been going out every Saturday night for the last 11 years religiously... i know, sad life, try something new...

I think everyone needs to assess this topic with consideration for the following 3 factors:

Factor 1 - Why Do You Want To Drink:
    a - to get drunk
b - you like the taste of alcohol
c - you cannot enjoy a night out without having an alcoholic drink in your hand and getting a little tipsy (you cannot get through the night sipping on a non-alcoholic drink)

Factor 2 - How Many Drinks (Units) Do You Need / Plan To Drink
a - as much as i possibly can on a night out
b - enough to have a drink in my hand at all times

Factor 3 - Does The Cost Of A Drink Concern You (within reason)
    a - yes
    b - no

    For me:
    Factor 1 = C
    Factor 2 = B
    Factor 3 = B

Based on the above i think Vodka, Ice & Diet Coke should do the trick.

I have to disagree that drinking is just drinking and you may as well drink what you want if you are going to... yes drink will greatly affect your training but i also think you can minimize the negative effect if you drink right...my 10 large bottles of Bulmers contains 2500 calories, where as 10 glasses of Vodka and a diet mixer will amount to 600 calories at most... i think...

Your namesake oo7 drinks it instead of his usual in the Casino Royale remake. But I know what you mean. I've only ever drunk it at sailing regattas, where they give away buckets of the stuff.

    so to recap

1.you cannot enjoy a night out without having an alcoholic drink in your hand
2.you need a drink in your hand at all times
    3. The cost of a drink doesnt concern you

Is it possible you might need to shine a light inwards?

For the negligible calorie difference I would go with whisky and soda or coke zero rather than vodka. The medium sweetness of coke zero compared to coke or diet coke complements a bourbon quite well I find. If you go down the soda water route instead and are in a decent pub you can get the smaller bottles with each drink which will save a quid a go.

I really enjoy going out and i don't have to get drunk just because i am out drinking is what i am saying...

I have drove out on many nights out but enjoy a few drinks...

Ha, no apology required... drinking to get crazy drunk is not something i am into, nor does the drink i am drinking bother me but i do like a few drinks to get you in the swing of things if that makes sense ;)

I have a perfect solution for you, drink a bottle of wine or two before you go out and then pints of water for the rest of the night :)

Only 600-1200 calories so it's a healthier option, you're drunk enough to enjoy your night and still having a drink in your hand :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭Doug Cartel

If cutting back on the calories while still getting a 10 pint buzz is your goal, how about just popping a few valium. Zero carbs in them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 364 ✭✭Lago

I usually get 500ml bottle of vodka and a bottle or two of diet coke and drink it with friends before we go out. It's cheap and since I'm trying to lose body fat, it's very low in calories.

However, I know the feeling of needing a drink in your hand. I get it the odd night for some reason and it's usually reflected in how much I spend that night. If you really need a drink in your hand, why not ask for a vodka and blackberry? If it has to be a beer, just ask for Bulmers Lite in a glass, then no one needs to know what you bought except you and the bar tender.

And if you don't care about getting very drunk (like I do), drink them slowly and it will be cheaper

I am just so shocked that somebody is that dependent on alcohol that they would take that amount! It astounds and worries me, quite frankly.

I am Irish. I also don't base nationality on a person's drinking status.

It is due to people getting drunk most weekends, going on binges etc. that has made our country a laughing stock when it comes to alcohol.

It is sickening that someone would drink 10 bottles in one night, or would get drunk before going out because they need it to 'socialise'.

well you seem very naive as if you just woke up today and realised how much other people drink. Are you a under 14?

No, I am not under 14. I am not naive, just find it quite disturbing when someone drinks that amount of alcohol, and someone casually recommending to drink 2 bottles of wine to 'build' himself up for a night out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭Doug Cartel

I took a bit of a straw poll among my friends yesterday after seeing this thread, and they all seemed to consider 10 pints to be a fairly heavy night. Even the ones I would consider to be total lushes thought it was excessive.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 372 ✭✭UL_heart_throb

Well tbh, I take what people say with a pinch of salt when it comes to drink. Unless you keep receipts, have a credit card receipt, who really remembers if they had 8, 9 or 10?

I mean you could say you went out with 50 and had barely enough for a burger after so 4.80x10 = 48 euro but otherwise i don't think extremely drunk people give accurate accounts of how much they drank.

But yeah, absolutely, for someone <30 10 pints is a massive number. Well it's a massive for anyone in terms of health but I'm sure alcos in their 50s probably fancy their ability to drive after 10.

Mates of mine used to drink a couple of bottles of wine between them 2/3 people so over a bottle each, load of pints (3-6) and then shots (3-6) in a night.

Lucky enough I'm fairly locked after 3 pints of weak ale.

It interests me this idea of being 'locked' as the goal on a night out.

Fairly pathetic that some people aim for that when they 'socialise.'

sounds like you have bit of a love-hate relationship with alcohol, a chip on your shoulder about drunkenness or a deep issue relating to alcohol assumption.

What's your fascination with other people's drinking habits? are you as interested in fat people that eat 10 burgers a day?

Please don't try your hand at psychiatry!

I have an expansive interest in Medicine, and all things related to human health and behaviour. However, seeing as you have taken the liberty to check my profile and previous posts, that should come as no surprise to you. Not that I'm complaining; if you have that much time on your hands, go ahead and examine my posts!

Yes, I do. Medicine is my area of study. In addition to that, I research Behavioural Science and to an equal degree Bariatrics. Alcoholism has always been a keen interest for me, and I enjoy delving into the reasons and mentality of those who go out specifically to 'get locked'-as you so eloquently described it.

Just to bring the tension down a lil... i honestly do drink 10 large bottles of bulmers on a night out, and sometimes more... but i will admit... if i had 6 pints of beer, i'd be asleep after it... the reason i think i can drink so much Bulmers is because i like a lot of ice with my drink, which to be fair is the equivalent of a beer drinker asking the bar man for a half glass of water each time they drink their pint of beer...

No, that is not what i meant... what i mean is... if i had no ice in my drink, maybe i would be only able to drink 6 large bottles of it... basically what i am saying is that cider doesn't seem to affect me in the same manor as beer does, hence i don't drink beer...

It's going to be messy when you start drinking spirits and a small mixer so.
