I'd assume that position is related to http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android rather than their own phone OS.

this story implied both ubuntu for android and ubuntu phone os would be separate entities :)

tis all rumour atm Im sure :)

Doesn't really suggest they are working on a separate OS. Just more conjecture.
    I know I'm being cynical :D

If they do bring out something like this, I'd love it to be easily ported to other android devices.
I'd love to use it, and I'm not in the mood to buy another phone for a very long time.

I also really want a phone OS with a terminal emulator. :pac:

    http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/01/cnn-predict-ubuntu-phone-wont-make-inroads

CNN don't think its worth the bother
The CNN article by Adrian Covert can be seen here

one interesting thing is that this ubuntu smartphone will use all of the screen and this is great. However, Why dont android and iOS? The first thing that comes to mind is adverts. On the bottom of the screen and top of iphones there are ads. Where will be the ads in the Ubuntu smartphone.

NO ad's? How do the developers make their money? - charge for the app?
Then we run into a bigger problem. will all apps will have to be paid for.

Its great that ubuntu is open source and this is all great but the people who make the apps aren’t. If angry bird ( just because its a free popular app) wants to go on this new ubuntu phone, then they have 3 choices - give it away for free and make no money , charge for it, dont bother

right , lets say you got to fork out the 99c or whatever it is for angry birds , boo hoo its a euro , we have 1 more problem - why would i get an ubuntu smartphone ? sure all the apps cost money!

One final comment why is the circle thing to see all apps at the bottom of the phone launcher , that’s just confusing

I don't see the issue with it being open source... by that logic you'd be paying for all the apps on ubuntu or any other linux distro. And yet we know there and may apps available - not just for free but with the source code.

I guess this move is probably the reason that ubuntu started allowing closed source apps to be sold via the ubunti software centre.

The main extra thing on the screen that Android has is the top bar and I haven't seen any ads in that.

It's up to an app developer if they want to include ads, they don't have to. I can't see it being any different on this os. If I write an app I can still choose to put in an ad on the screen I'm making a decision to do it. Once an api is provided to support showing ads then developers have the choice to do it or not. In fact they could potentially show 2 adds and still have the same screen space for their core app

It's interesting from one of the videos above they mention docking it to get the full desktop experience. Looks like it will include a type of Ubuntu for Andorid experience.

Also not a fan of how much holding and scrolling there seems to be e.g. to get to an app on the dock you have to hold your finger on the screen to scroll around the dock

i have no problem what so ever with closed source apps on linux . My question is where do you put the ads if they are using the 4 sides of the screen ?

I have no problem paying for programs on linux and actualy encourage it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,620 ✭✭✭Grudaire

I'm actually impressed with the videos of it.. looks like a very nice UI.

And as it can use any html5 developed apps at least it will be introduced with more than no apps! (http://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/2013/01/04/ubuntu-for-smartphones-what-it-means-for/)

Yeah I agree, I was quite distracted by it myself. Having said that, I'm intrigued by the UI - I'm delighted to see they've tried to do their own thing with it instead of going for the tile grid layout etc as on iOS and Android.

Does anybody know if the ubuntu mobile OS will be fully or only partially open source?

I dont understand your question. I have no ads on my homescreen on my phone. About the only place I do see ads is right hand corner of Angry Birds, but thats Angry Birds, not the OS.

Don't think I'd jump straight into it but would try a dual boot for a while if they have a Galaxy S3 build

I'd guess that all the quad core phones will be targeted initially. I have a one-x (which I actually plumped for over the one-s because of the promise of ubuntu for android) and I fully expect it to be supported early on. I might be inclined to move to the oul' nexus though. It seems like a fine piece of kit for the money and I find the one-x screen to be a bit big for my lady like hands.

I forgot about this, but with Firefox OS also on the cards, will the demand exist to support several Linux based smartphone OS's?

This looks amazing, I'm sold on this not just for phones but there are so many possiblities, striaght away would love to wipe Android 2.1 off my old "not supported" tablet, wonder what the performance would be like.

After seeing some videos of it at CES.

My contract for the iphone is finished in 6 months and this will be my next phone, I'm constantly thinking at what I can do on it, it will truly be a computer in your pocket.

Is there a phone available that has a docking station w/ mouse, keyboard and monitor connections etc.

This is the only one I could find, w/mini usb and full sized HDMI, only issue is it's a sony.

Can you imagine? No more bringing laptop into work, just bring your phone.

Im sold on this too. I don't understand the people saying they are too late to the party.

As for the argument that it will take them too long to develop an appstore, is there anyone running Ubuntu on this thread? Can you do an "apt-cache search | wc -l" and post up the figure for us?

I've gotten decent experience out of my Galaxy Nexus using an MHL adapter and bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

I am pretty annoyed that Google didn't include MHL in the Nexus 7 though.

Only issue I can see is ubuntu's hardware acceleration is very poor, so running a html5 rdp client to a VDI might be slow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 570 ✭✭✭hooplah

I'm excited about the idea of Ubuntu on the phone - basically becaue it should allow for a huge amount of modification and customisation.

I'm more dubious about the hardware periphals and using it as a desktop or laptop replacement though. Are there docking stations that will work with different models of phones? What type of connection do they typically use? If I wanted to use this at home or work would everyone who used it need to have the same model phone?

    paul@vila:~$ apt-cache stats
    Total package names: 47946 (959 k)

I'm not likely to go for this. I tried for a long time to cope with Unity, but I eventually gave up and installed Fedora 17 on the laptop, and I can see it ending up on my main desktop very soon.

I'll be curious to see how it goes down in the real world, though.

Funnily enough I am also a Fedora user and would love to see fedora on a phone. There is a small group of devs doing work on ARM for Fedora, and a former colleague ran Fedora on his tablet so I can see it happening in the future. Im hoping that whatever work Canonical do by way of it working on phones can be easily replicated for Fedora.

Im also a KDE user and there is a KDE project to get KDE onto a tablet, so Im looking forward to the day when I can use Fedora and KDE on my phone, tablet(when I get one), laptop and desktop.

Once I can do that, then I will build a centralised backup solution(essentialy encrypt /home and store it on a cloud), which will allow me to access all my content on all my devices. The future is bright!

edit: With regard to the repository stats, practically every package also has a -devel and and -libs package, so divide that number by 3 to get a slightly more accurate idea of how many applications are in the repository.

It seems I got my threads confused a bit. There is another thread in the android forum where people are being a lot less positive than here, and it was one of those comments I was responding to.

    i use ubuntu , love it ,

Fedora are in a mess, 3 months back dated.
You may have not like their chose, but it was all set up for touch.
Weather you agree or not , i think it was the right chose as so to develop on mobile ect.

Canonical and ubuntu haven't missed a date. You must give them credit for that.

at 11.04 mark told us that he will have 200 million people running ubuntu by 2015 You must say that although laughed at , hes putting a good fight for it.

I'm not trying to be down on Ubuntu; just making the point that it no longer suits my requirements. I mean, the first thing I've done on every Ubuntu install over the past year or so is install Gnome Shell so I don't have to use Unity, but I also always have to disable those straight-from-the-smoking-pit-of-Hades invisible scrollbars.

The other issue I have with Ubuntu is that I don't think I've had a successful desktop distribution upgrade for several years now, to the extent that I put off and off upgrading until I eventually give up, back up my files and settings, re-install from scratch and set about rebuilding my old environment. I'll be curious to see how well Fedora upgrades work.
