Huge solar flare threatens chaos

Were in for a bit of a blast of radiation over the next 48hrs.

An enormous solar flare is heading toward Earth and could disrupt power grids, satellite navigating, flights and the weather and it's going to get worse with more eruption on the sun due.

Not sure if we should be worried, might go to the pub just in case.

    telegraph wrote:

Two massive solar flares have erupted this week on the Sun, astronomers reported on Wednesday.

The first flare occurred on Sunday and the second on Tuesday. The resulting ejections of plasma, known as coronal mass ejections (CME), began reaching the Earth on Wednesday. Increased CME activity on Earth could interfere with orbiting transmission satellites and could causes outages on global positioning systems and other devices. Flucuations to some electrical power grids may also be experienced.

The CME is traveling toward Earth at more than two million miles per hour.

The images of the flares were captured by the geosynchronous Solar Dynamics Observatory. The magnetic field telescope observed the most volatile activity in the region of the Sun known as Active Region 1429.

Hope it actually does happen. Unlikely to kill anyone directly at least and a welcome bit of chaos as a distraction from the ongoing financial woes

It's not here yet, 2 boats collided in the north but don't know if it's a gps related incident.

It's due at at about 1:30 a.m. Eastern time Thursday -- with a margin of error of plus or minus seven hours. I think that's about 6am in Cork tomorrow give or take 7 hours.

Well if you start getting any urges to assassinate the Premier of the Soviet Union just remember the safe word is "Cletus".

A large solar storm blacked out a large part of Canada nine years ago, more of a pain in the arse than a disaster!
