It’s actually a pretty comfortable and stylish hotel. I stayed there for a weekend in 2016 and really liked it. There’s some more pictures in this blog post I wrote about my stay there:
    http://thomil-english.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-other-dam-weekend-trip-report.html

Most of the actual pictures of the ship were taken by my late dad.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Had the pleasure of seeing her anchored in Galway Bay when Holland American Liners used to call to Galway. It was usually the Maasdam and Ryndam that called but she came once.

I was on the Gosport side and didn't visit Portsmouth, but in general, the entire area seemed really nice and an absolute hive of marine activity (sitting in the restaurant on that green lightship, and seeing ships pass by that were only about 70 metres away was cool.

I've been to Newport RI, which is a mecca for sailing, but I'd say the Gosport/Portsmouth areas are by far bigger and better in terms of sheer numbers of marinas/boats/chandlers/boat yards etc...

The submarine museum is close to Haslar marina where I sailed from, I didn't visit the museum, but they have a full size sub on display sitting parallel to the marina.

Vaguely remember seeing her anchored off Cork harbour in the mid sixties, Nieuw Amsterdam was the regular visitor to Cork at that time.

4 British men were rescued from a disabled sailboat last night, 250 nautical miles off Halifax. The 4 were hoisted off the sailboat, and flown to Halifax. The 45′ boat was in 21′ seas, with a 50knot wind (75KM/h) and looks to have a shredded Jib sail, and lost steering control.

The vessel is the Makena and was bound for Toronto, via the Canary Islands with an apparently professional delivery crew aboard. The owner had recently purchased the boat.

I have been told that the crew were under prepared, and lacked survival suits. Certainly others have questioned the wisdom of being in a sailboat, in the North Atlantic, In December. If the plan was to make Toronto, they would have encountered ice in the St. Lawrence river, and the pending closure of the locks above Montreal at the end of the Month.

CCGS Cape Roger, HMCS Summerside, HMCS Glace Bay, A USCG Aircraft and a vessel of Opportunity all responded.

Pretty sweet photo to go along with the story in fairness. Agreed though about the rescue.

    Fantastic background to that shot.

The 'doughnutting' ferry is empty and looks brand new so likely a delivery publicity shot.
