    No drive included......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,678 ✭✭✭yllw.ldbttr

@Preddy - yes no drive included - that seems to be the complaint from most people but this is a serious piece of kit.

It has a local USB so you can connect any dumb hard drive directly to it,
I use a 1TB NAS and this box has pretty much replaced my Sky Box.

    Use it for:
Streaming of local content from my NAS - I've yet to throw a filetype at it that it couldn't play, wired/ wireless.

I have an UnblockUs account too so this works perfectly for:

    Netflix
    Pandora
    Vudu
    BBC Player
    RTE Player
    TV3 Player
    Youtube
    TuneIn Radio
SOR-OMC - takes streams from all over the web

Firmware updates at least twice a year usually,
    Nice QWERTY remote

I can't recommend this one enough, it's a serious piece of kit.

i believe i just found my early birthday present! i've been looking at these for a while but they've just been that bit too expensive. no more messing around with cables when streaming LOF. the design of the remote is very smart. i was also looking at an atv but i just can't give money to apple.

    cheers op

It works well with LOF? Do you just go to the website on its browser or is there a plugin?

Can this output files encoded at 24fps at the correct framerate? I am looking for a box that can do this, but seems to be impossible to find.

I use UnblockUs @ 5 Canadian dollars per month, well worth it, works for Netflix USA, BBC etc....

I think PlayMo works for free at the moment

$5 on top of the subscription to netflix etc though.
    Sky wouldn't cost much more

It does have some issues I agree, the developers are more focused on US users, no doubt about that.. but... as streamers go, there's nothing better on the market for handling local content.
The flash issue is a recent problem, I expect it will be resolved within a few months hopefully. There's a workaround for the 4OD app -check out the Boxee forums.

As well as that, I personally find the 5 dollars per month UnblockUs subscription makes the device ten times more usable, if only for US Netflix, Pandora, BBC player etc...
Not to mention the Bartsidee App/ Navi X/ SOR OMC - puts almost every stream on the web into a nice user friendly interface.

Cheapest Sky sub is what €32 euro per month?
    5 canadian dollars is €3.70
8 USD for Netflix is €6 (I use the US account for the queue feature, missing in the Irish version)....

So, do the maths... Sky does cost quite a bit more (3 TIMES MORE), plus has a contract upon signup...
In any event, it's not a Sky replacement for most people, just suited my viewing habits very well.

    Got one too!
Between 3 media players, Cable TV, Sky Sports, ESPN, Setanta, Eurosport and now a Boxee box I believe I will now have the ultimate Viewing experience!

Thanks. The spec sheet for that says it can output: 23.976p, 24p, PAL, NTSC. Which is what I am looking for!

It also handles, and outputs, lossless audio ie. dolby TrueHD and DTSHD.

    It's pricey, but it's good.

For anyone feeling a bot more adventurous, it looks like the first batch of Raspberry Pi's will go on sale tomorrow

    http://www.raspberrypi.org/

Its a mini $35 (+ unspecified delivery charges) PC with an ARM processor that has a HDMI, USB and ethernet ports. SD card reader instead of a hard drive

I just go to the browser,I have it bookmarked and password etc saved,

It literally takes 1 minute to get it full screen and playing

Can't do that on my WDTV Live...that's a big draw for me I have to say.

. . .la liga, ufc, boxing, horse racing (if that's your thing) etc. - it's freakin class, is what it is :D

less channels but much better quality - especially the HQ streams that they normally have for the bigger matches (3-5mb BB minimum needed for HQ though)

Got one of these last October, plus my subscription to LOF and its the business, sky who ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Soarer

I am liking the sound of this LOF once my half price Sky Sports subscription ends.

Is it flash based? Wondering if I'll be able to watch it direct on the tv without the laptop.

yup, it's flash based. a word of warning, they only open for new subscriptions on random occasions - i assume this helps to maintain the high quality. there's a huge thread over in soccer that would be worth keeping an eye on to see when the next open day is

People's obession with LOF always perplexes me.

If you're gonna watch your footy online on a pirate site in order to not pay Sky for the privilage......... why would you then pay for it?

it's not just sky, it's espn, setanta, fox etc. etc. as well. searching around and asking in threads for streams of varying quality with the propensity to be cut off at any time was just getting old for me, especially with the demise of myp2p.eu. £6 for 60 days of reliable high quality streams is easily something i can live with

I've heard it works via the Bartsidee Repo... not got it working myself though to be honest, saying that, I've not tried too hard.

    No official support though...

I have been using LOF for two months now - it's absolutely class. The quality is amazing. You will never use a free stream site ever again.

Just wondering - does it stream any other sports? (rugby, golf, etc.)
I've only ever seen football and the Klitschko v Chisora fight on it.

Shame I only bought the new WD TV Live media player a few months ago. This looks so much better. Bought the WD as I needed something to enable me to watch Netflix on my tv, but the online content is limited. Not even able to use RTE PLayer or browse the web.

it tends to go for whatever is a big attraction. golf wouldn't be on it an awful lot but i have seen some golf - can't remember which tournament. for some reason they don't do italian football. the ufc main cards are always on, if you're willing to stay up that late. there's horses on everyday but i have minus interest in that. there'll be a random smattering of other sports if a big tournament is on - i'm vaguely remembering seeing some tennis a while ago.

For anyone looking to utilise the RTE player on it, there used to be an unofficial app but it stopped working a while back.

    Anyways, the XL player works perfectly... use the below link and bookmark it on your Boxee Browser;

Ive had the 2 and trust me,being able to play videos without jailbreaking etc. is a gift,Just plug the boxee in and play..

Being able to plug in a hard drive is a definite advantage.

I think you should pay the extra on the boxww because you wont look back..

    Well I havent...
