What would be the best job for a guy in his early 20 's with over 180 ucas points and a degree in Physiology?

An IQ of 180.. very physically fit..5 10" 13 stone, good looking and have little gun experience

I'm new to this and there seems to be many jobs in engineering and medical jobs on their website

Their website is very good I must say compared to that of the Irish navy which is a complete joke

the irish have a NAVAL SERVICE and not an actual navy like the brits and united states, and is an arm of the irish defence forces so therefore a website just particularly just for them would,nt be warranted

what a load of utter sh1te - there are one man bands out there with better websites than the NS - and indeed the DF as a whole.

the NS has well over 1000 personnel, 8 vessels - all of them armed - undertakes global voyages and is the force of Law in the Irish EEZ and on the high sea. to say that its web presence shouldn't be professional just because its not as big as other navies (if its got grey ships with big guns on them, its a Navy - get over it) is just pathetic arse covering.

Do you not have to be a British citizen (living in Britain 5 years) to be certain jobs in the RN? Might be worth checking out.

I remember looking into it a while ago, but only remember it being about pilots and MPs have to be British citizens. May have changed since.

On another note, but don't won't to derail the thread, but are the Irish Naval Service even recruiting??

Also, on another note, I quite like the Irish website.

Sorry, had to be done! You can join if you are Irish, but they do say that some career paths are only available to British citizens. The link to the page explaining what that means in more detail isn't working on the Royal Navy website, but I imagine it means that you can only reach a certain rank.

So you judge a service by its website, rather than the job it does?
Best of luck in your career. I suggest a retest on the IQ though.

For an officer you normally need a degree in Engineering or Medical Degree (MD for Doctor, Dentist Degree for Dentist etc)

Get on the phone to the naval recruiting office up north and ask them. IQ is not relevant and they will tell you what your can use your degree for.

The Irish navy are a joke I bet they spend most days drinking tea. If I wanted to spend my time hidding from the action I would go on a fas course:rolleyes:

From the 18th to the early 20th Century yes, but certainly not now. Britain could barely muster a force of a tired old frigate and two patrol vessels to shadow a Russian carrier group which entered British waters.

Ok, although I wish I could respond to this a certain way, if I did it would most likely result in having to ban myself.

Instead, rather than going to the trouble of correcting the absolute nonsense you've posted in this thread, I'll offer some advice... Lose the attitude.

Nobody cares if you're good looking, nobody cares if you have little gun experience and quite frankly, nobody cares about the IQ of 180 that you claim to have.

You haven't spent a day in the Royal Navy or the Naval Service. You haven't made it through recruit training, you haven't spent a single day at sea, you haven't spent a minute seeing "action" and you've no idea what way a Navy is judged.

Wind your neck in. If your posts on here are anything to go by, you've quite a bit of maturing to do before you decide to grace the Royal Navy with your obviously, ever so awesome presence.

Being a Royal Marine is all about attitude, arrogance and a state of mind

If nobody cares about these things you have kindly pointed out..why do they ask for a man of my caliber and qualities ??

    Are you a royal marine?

Alright...it's CALIBRE not CALIBER (unless you're an american). And considering that is usually a military (or Navy) term the least you could do is get that much right.
Seeing as your particular IQ test ignored both spelling and grammar I suggest that you get some help when filling out your application form for whichever Navy you decide to grace with your presence.

By the way I'm not normally as cranky as this, but you have only yourself to blame

It's good advice. I'm not in the Defence Forces, but from getting quite far in the selection process a number of times, I can tell you that that kind of attitude will get you exactly nowhere. It's not the type of thing the interview panel want to see.

If so..I would not be suprised if you are right...The Irish defence force want people with no attitude and no arrogance so they can development them into peace keepers i.e Standing outside a bank with an unarmed gun

Being in the RN(which includes RM) also requires respect for other armed forces.
Dont run down a countries forces especially when you have no experience of being in an armed force. Apply some of this alleged IQ sensibly and you just might make it.

Yes, but that's irrelevant. Arrogance and a disrespectful attitude won't help your chances. See what happens when someone tries to rob that bank, they don't stand around for fun.

After celebrating its 60th anniversary last year, the Naval Service, the maritime division of the Defence Forces, is set to embark on the State's largest ever single military contract worth €180m on a new vessel upgrade and fleet replacement programme, writes Jehan Ashmore. The proposed contract is for three custom-built vessels that may include commissioning the largest ship in the history of the Naval Service at one-third in size larger to the existing flagship, L.E. Eithne. This ‘enhanced naval vessel’ also known as a ‘multi-role vessel’ (MRV) is 120 metres long and is set to cost €90m while the two 80 metres offshore patrol vessels (OPV) come with a price tag of €45m each

Well I would have thought that been the wealthest and most powerful country in the world it would be a good chance that Uncle Sam would have the most modern navy. Look at the RN website, nearly all the ships and subs are all ultra modern, its a toss up between the UK and France.

The US navy still operates vessels inc air craft carriers built in the 1960s. Some of there fleet is old.

3 carriers only decomissioned in the last couple of yrs had been in service since 1961.

One decomissioned in the 90s had been in service since WW2.

There was a time when it was true to say '' Brittania rules the waves '' however that was a very long time ago and it's fair to say the Royal Navy has for decades born the brunt of UK defence cuts.
To even attempt to compare them to the US Navy is laughable - the Royal Navy as of now has no carriers and even when it did they had no supersonic aircraft , they have no maritime patrol capability and even when the new carriers enter service ( IF that ever happens )the trade off will involve the de-commissioning of a number of destroyers and frigates.

The US navy is likley to grow in the future ( ref Obabma's new defence strategy ) to counter the growing threat posed by China.

As for the OP ? With that attitude he's likely to have an ' accident ' on any ship ( assuming he's not a troll ).

Who compared them to the US Navy in size ?

Obviously the US by far the largest Navy, who disputed that ? that does not mean the most modern. The UK does have helicopter carriers.

And it also has 1 aircraft carrier still in service. Albeit it now used as a helicopter carrier.

"Sunday Times suggests that the Royal Navy is looking to purchase a fleet of maritime patrol aircraft for up to £1 billion just weeks after the MOD decided to scrap the Nimrod fleet at a cost of £3.6 billion. The report states that the MOD had confirmed that the Royal Navy wanted to buy its own fleet of aircraft to track enemy submarines."

You cant have a Aircraft carrier if you have no aircraft....

    as for the Nimrod replacement....
The replacement for the Nimrod R1 will be the Rivet Joint aircraft, due into service with the RAF in 2014.

Note how it will be a RAF aircraft...:D

Please stop making stuff up, I simply stated the RN was considering buying some fixed wing AEW aircraft.

The RN's AEW requirement is currently met by Sea King ASaC.7 and Merlin Mk1 helicopters deployed with various RN sqns. They deploy with carrier groups....and yes the RN still has an aircraft carrier.

    .....Get your facts right

Theres also 815 sdn RN, which flys the Lynx, its the largest Helo sqn in the world.....check it out.

The RN has around 44 Merlins

    http://www.armedforces.co.uk/navy/listings/l0036.html

The Royal Navy currently operates 38 x aircraft (with four in reserve) in the anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare role in 4 x squadrons (814, 820, 824 and 829 Sqns). All are based at RNAS Culdrose. When embarked the aircraft can operate from almost any capable flight deck.

    http://www.armedforces.co.uk/navy/listings/l0034.html

The Sea King Mk 7 is used for airborne surveillance and control and has Search Water 2000 Radar carried in a radardome that can be swivelled down underneath the aircraft for operational air and sea searches. In addition, there is an Orange Crop Electronic Support Measures system fitted

Its up to me now if I want to pursue a career in the military. Its something I need to dwell on over the next few weeks

As I always say..If it bleeds it can be killed ...RA.RA.RA

You forgot to mention that the recruiting officer also said they need some good looking guys like you
Also don't forget that James Bond was a Royal Navy Commander before becoming 007 - thats another career path you could consider ?

Being a Royal Marine is all about attitude, arrogance and a state of mind

If nobody cares about these things you have kindly pointed out..why do they ask for a man of my caliber and qualities ??

    Are you a royal marine?

I suggest you go ask this question on the Royal Marine forum. I post regularly enough there and know what the lads (The actual RMC's, not PRMC's) will say roughly. It will be funny, you will be made a laughing stock of the forum.

If you were to show up at Lympstone with that attitude, you'll find the Cpl's giving you quite a beasting straight off the bat. As of now and until you fully complete any form of military training, you're nothing more than a civvy.

The RN's AEW requirement is currently met by Sea King ASaC.7 and Merlin Mk1 helicopters deployed with various RN sqns. They deploy with carrier groups.

    .....Get your facts right

I like how you claim the royal navy is so modern and then bring out the Helicopters that are so old... the Sea King is a 40+ year old design and the Lynx is now 30+ also... And the Merlin is also not the best replacement for the Sea King as they are so heavy and not powerful enough to carry a full load , The RAF are also finding the same problem...
Merlin Mk3 is technically advanced however it has issues, ie high basic weight which adding blade fold will not help in the slightest. The ramp is far too steep and has caused knee injuries to pax bussing and debussing at anything above walking pace. The engines are not that robust, the gearboxes are made of cheese and the airframe fizzes and thats before Mk3 has been near the seaside. I've been told that the FAA doesn't want it as its not the right aircraft for them

Must of you guys are only key board warriors, who frequent this forum and watch films like black hawk down to accept who you are rather that who you could have become:rolleyes:

If you think the Irish Naval Service only sit around and drink tea, you will not make it far in any navy.

If you try and join the Royal Navy and are so completely uneducated on all things to do with naval service that you don't even know how many weeks your OWN countries naval service spend at sea, going through hard training, getting shag all sleep, and interdicting more ARMED AND DANGEROUS drugs smugglers than your countries own police do, you won't make it very far.

The Irish naval service is the sea based element of the Irish Defence Forces. It operates around the clock, every day of the year, continuously on patrol, and boarding vessels that smuggle drugs into Ireland. It operates mostly in a coast guard role. But that is still a role that a military force is capable of. They operate 8 vessels. They are heavily armed, and they are a deterrent to aggression against the Irish state within our waters. They may not be able to mount a military intervention force on some islands thousands of miles away and battle it out with another country, but that is because that is not their role.

Man for man (and woman for woman), they are a well trained, extremely professional military entity, and I promise you, if you even tried the first half of their recruit training with the flippant, uninformed, but for some reason opinionated attitude that you have now, you would be one of the many people that quit because of how physically and mentally demanding training is. There is no time to drink tea.

I would love to rant on, but to be honest, I too was once an immature overly opinionated gob****e with ambitions of joining a military service just like you, who commented and made ridiculous threads just as stupid as yours on this site. So I won't paint you to be a bad guy. I'll just give you some proper advice. The Irish Naval Service has come quite a long way in the last few decades. There once was a time when they probably would spend a lot of time drinking tea, but no matter how much you don't like their un-flashy website, that is no longer the case. The training is long and hard, and its members are sea bound soldiers who operate war ships (most of which have kit and technology used by your so idolized Royal Navy). Take part in an armed boarding party, and look down the barrel of your Steyr 5.56mm assault rifle at the guy who makes a living shipping heroin and illegal arms and might just try blow your head off, and then come on here and say the Irish Naval Service is a joke. Until you get an attitude adjustment DO NOT bother trying to join either Naval service.

Yes there are Irish Royal Marines. I know one, and if he heard someone saying the Irish Navy was a "joke" he would have exactly the same things to say that I just did. Do some research. Talk to some people that have completed Irish Naval Service training recently. Get a bit of education on the matter. Get an insight into the work the lads and lasses in the Navy do. Then decide what you want to do. You can't just judge them by their website (I'm guessing that you only judged them by that because you literally know nothing else about them) and come on here and call a large force of dedicated military professionals who do more work and go through more danger day to day than you probably ever have, and bash them. Because there are a lot of people on here who have served in both Navy's, and when you say something as stupid as you just did, you are the only joke on this thread. Also just for your info, I'm not in the Defence Forces or the Crown forces.

If you have the credentials that you say you have, I would recommend going for a cadetship in the Irish Naval Service. But don't expect to get in unless you change the attitude.

Irish Naval Service personnel also take part in peacekeeping and peace enforcement operations along side their comrades from the Air Corps and the Army all around the world. I know peacekeeping is not a tour in Afghanistan, but quite often it comes under the category of 'action'. The families of our fallen soldiers who gave their lives while on these peacekeeping missions will be able to tell you that. I know that's grim, but there is too much of an 'Irish Defence Forces don't actually do any soldiering' attitude around, and it is un-true.

Also, if you want answers, don't be insulting the people posting here. Some of the people here have probably soldiered more than you ever will, even if you ever manage to make it into the Royal Navy.

On this forum quite a number of posters are current or ex military.

You do not have the experience to tell which are real or, are like you a
    keyboard warrior.

Your come across as an egotist who is only trying to impress , all you have done here is display plenty of arrogance and shown no respect to members of this countries defence forces.. Get more life experience before you join any military force, or I fear you will not last the initial training.

Humility is a good thing if you see the military as a career option!!
