Just for a balanced look, Bantry Bay is devoid of ships this morning.

I noticed that yesterday morning. Earlier in the morning there was an even larger bulker off the Mayo/Galway coast southbound to the mid east. Can't remember the name but it suggested an Oriental title even though it was of Greek registry. I tried several times during the day to catch its icon but to no avail. I think its draft was 18 meters.
Meanwhile the Nordmark is heading for Whitegate as I type.

...it is the Zhong May, not of Greek registry but Liberian. Now off the west coast of Portugal as I type.

Yesterdays (Sunday) New York Times has a very interesting article in the Automobiles section titled "Around the World With 5,500 Cars" if anybody is interested. The article tells what is involved portside and onboard with a typical journey of a car carrier, in this case the Andromeda Leader operated by NYK Lines a large Japanese ship line.

NYK tries to limit the time its ships stay in port to 24 hours, avoiding overtime and berthing fees of $3,000 or more a day.

On a visit this spring, the Andromeda Leader arrived in the early evening, and the 22-person crew immediately set to work refueling, doing maintenance chores and buying provisions for the return voyage.

    Sounds like a hoot... :(

There was a Notice to Mariners about it recently. Either a Cable or Pipeline being laid I think, they do some of the DP surveying

Last Friday's Financial Times (27/7/12) had an interview with the captain of the Sirius Star, hijacked on 15/11/08 in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia. Could not find a link, but it was on page 10. In addition last Mondays Nationwide (23/7/12) program was on Bantry with a segment on Whiddy. Some close ups of the Thrax and footage of the disaster of 1/79, also a mention of the 51 who perished, R.I.P. Now, am I the only one who has noticed that since the "banana boat" changed its call from Thursday to Friday, that it is arriving early in the morning as opposed to midafternoon? (I viewed the Nationwide episode using "RTE player".)

I worked on the last Granuaile years back - we used to have a good few trips over to the UK. Morecombe bay, Liverpool bay, Isle of Man a couple of times too and of course lots of trips up around Northern Ireland.

It was the summer before I joined her that happened, I think all the commisoners were helicoptered off to the beach at the time, exciting stuff apparently!

Those commissoner trips were some junkets, money well spent! The accomodation on board and the food was 5* all the way.

I'd guess fertilizer or wood chips. A lot of those deep sea ships coming from South America usually don't carry anything exciting

Bit of a waste for a heavy lift ship surely?

    www.hansaheavylift.com/

I was hoping for something exciting as deck cargo ;)

The "HL" stands for "heavy lift" and it is out of Norfolk, VA. More windmills is my guess. Perhaps it is a very large ball and chain for Seanie FitzPatrick...

Ship off west Kerry coast headed for Bantry, Sally Knutson or something spelled similarly to that name, as I type. The Ras Maersk will be second on line, entering the bay as I type.
