So am I! And probably 90% of people that watch anime actually contradict this "theory" :)

'm living proof that you are wrong
    ^ this

I dont fall into his childish stereotype either, but he does have somewhat of a point. It is true there are lots of idiots or "weeaboo's"/whatever name people gives to them that watch anime and run around being annoying. Everyone knows that and the same can be said for every hobby/interest in the entire world

The thing is, the majority of those people he talks about are in their young teens or so I have noticed, and how many young teens dont fall into some silly phase and why should anyone care if they had any sense of maturity?

If he was any older or maturer he would know that a lot of "normal" (what classfies as normal?) people watch it too. He also wouldnt hold a childish opinion that makes him sound like he holds some sort of grudge and gets offended by it.

I know adults in the military that like anime and businessmen that like it, none of them are "fat nerds with no hygeine" I can assure you that, and both are married.

I dont think he is trolling, judging by his other posts and how long he's been here on boards. Seeing where he posted (wow forum and other video game forums) in the past, I think he may just be projecting more than anything. Im sorry if you only know of kids anime, but believe it or not, there is anime for adults too. Hey, there's even western cartoons for adults :D Anybody ever hear of the Simpsons, Southpark, Futurama etc?

Im actually interested to hear any genuine feedback he can give rather than just bursting in and running his gob. So get back to me when you're unbanned.

It's true, alot of people in their young teens can be very annoying while asserting their love for anime and the majority of the time the one's they fawn over are the really popular (over-rated) ones (Naruto, for example). And I think it's a little unfair to judge an entire fanbase by a minority of its fans.

I hate anime because alot of the plot lines can be called out after watching the first episode (predictable love triangles, continuous battle/training scenarios, good guy vs bad guy and good guy always trumping etc). But I love anime because when you find a really good one it's so hard to stop yourself from becoming addicted to it! You could say this for anything really, but there just something about anime (maybe the graphics? humour? cultural context?) that makes me fall in love with it everytime... :p

Because every title sequence to any anime is the same. Also it seems that they spend the majority of the animation budget on a one minute sequence that's like every other title sequence.

Then there's the elitists that declare that anything made in the east is far superior because the character designs and backgrounds are more detailed when in fact the majority of the techniques and methods anime artists use are all borrowed and influenced from western culture. This is basic information that the majority of so called otakus don't seem to grasp.

This thread is cancer, it was an awful idea and now every post I see seems to have something I feel like correcting, but won't because it's pointless. Yeah healthy debate and all that, but on the internet nobody really wants to believe their opinion is misinformed, worthless and most of all wrong.

Call for lock because the maturity of the conversation has gone way downhill.

And as for all OPs looking the same, I could prove you wrong 100 times but just once is enough for tonight

I wouldn't nessecarily say that- I think it's kinda interesting to see what opnions people have of anime and the people who watch them; to see why some non-fans don't enjoy anime. Yeah, some of the arguements have been really silly and downright pointless but others are actually relevant.
I think the thread should continue...

I agree the thread should continue.

Some more things I hate dislike about anime.

Cheap CGI being used for things like backgrounds and transition scenes (eg car driving down the road after main character gets into it) edit: CGI in general :V

Too many shows being set in highschool, often with the same character types. Some of them are great, but others not so much.

Too true! Sometimes it feels like your simply watching the same anime. All that's changed really is the character's names and faces; everything else is almost the same, even the story line.

If its set in a highschool its most likely going to be a love triangle drama-thingy, with fangirls and bishie boys and maybe some light echi humour thrown into the mix.

Sadly that's a culture problem rather than just anime. Across all forms of Japanese entertainment young people dominate, because creators think that it sells better and that young people will better identify with the character. Of coarse, most young people attend highschool, so there we have our problem.

We just have to bear with it honestly. While some anime are aimed at western audiences and have great older heroes (Cowboy Bebop) most of the time these shows aren't popular in Japan (Tiger and Bunny being a notable exception recently, which will hopefully start a trend). While Western fans hated Raiden in MGS2 most Japanese like him. For the European and American release of video game Nier, Square Enix changed the protagonist from a young man trying to save his girlfriend to an old veteran trying to save his daughter.

While I have no doubt this will change at some stage (Japan loved badass samurai in the 50s and middle-aged ambitious men in the 80's (Char from MSG for example) for these last two decades of anime it's just our lot.

I hate anime because so much of it is, I believe, awful.

Harem comedies with awful humour and terrible characters. Cheap adaptations of visual novels with no depth, cookie cutter plots and one character for every archetype on the list. Countless shows set in high schools featuring short skirts and sixteen year olds. Another shounen manga with obvious heroes, predictable villains and ridiculous mcguffins.

Anime is bad. Every time I look at a new release schedule I'm reminded of this. I hold out for the sweet nectar that you find in the cracks of each release schedule. The Madokas, the Redlines, the Tatami Galaxies and the Lupin the Thirds. There'll always be at lease one show worth watching, though sometimes it's difficult to find.

I hate how genuinely unintentionally creepy and borderline misogynistic a lot of it is. The fact that some people consider Ninja Scroll and Overfiend to be masterpieces worries me slightly.

It's a shame because beyond the cookie cutter crap and masturbation fodder there is some really amazing stuff (Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain, Kino's Journey, Evangelion, Baccano, Stand Alone Complex, Azumanga Daioh, the works of Satoshi Kon, Makoto Shinkai and Hayao Miyazaki). There's just so much unnecessary rubbish to work your way around if you happen to be interested in anime, and some of the writers/animators over in Japan need to seriously up their game and think beyond a niche audience of dribbling idiots if they don't want to further perpetuate the negative stereotypes of it. :pac:

Almost every time I meet someone and discover they watch anime they start telling me how awesome Ninja Scroll is. It's nothing short of depressing.

Pretty sure it was the other way around -- Nier was designed with an older character to start with, but then marketing in Japan decided that they could never sell this in Japan

When you compare what people rage about being terrible and overrated in anime (K-On!, Evangelion, Death Note) and what people rage about being terrible and overrated on western TV (CSI, Lost, all those MTV shows) it's clear which is stronger as a form of media.
I'm watching most of the shows this season and while some of them aren't amazing masterpieces they're all what would be classified as GOOD, rather than just WATCHABLE. In contrast, most new shows on western TV fall into WATCHABLE almost automatically. Masterpieces are as rare as hen's teeth, just look at all the hype Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones get, because they're not terrible! A lot of this is of coarse due to size of budget and trying to make a show safe.

Now on to why I hate anime, because it's too good! Why can't there be more unwatchable trash, WHY! Then I could play more games :D
That's a deliberately skewed comparison. You're comparing some of the best anime (EVA) with crap like MTV shows. Stuff like Deadwood, Carnivale, Six Feet Under and The Wire more than holds its own. It's actually much better.

Game of Thrones is gutter trash. It's enjoyable trash, but trash nonetheless.

Not that I hate anime. It's just that TV is so much better. I haven't watched an anime cartoon in a long while. Find it hard to find stuff that's genuinely good besides movies.

No, you missed my point a little bit. I've seen Six Feet Under and The Wire, and I'd definitely add Life on Mars or Arrested Development to a list of great TV shows. What I'm trying to say is the ratio of Great shows to Crap shows is much much larger when it comes to anime. I'm watching most new anime this season and nearly all of it's pretty good. It was the same last season and the one before that. We're lucky if we get 2-3 good TV shows A YEAR over here. At least, ones that aren't designed for folk with more than 40 IQ.

As for finding good anime, I'd recommend Anime Planet. Look up the shows you like and the most recommended similar shows will be near the top of recommendations. These won't be picked for simple reasons like "both have kids piloting giant robots". You'll be able to read the reasons and often it will mean that both feature similar themes. I've found a few absolute gems by doing this.

As for your last point, that's all opinion man. As a huge fan of art anime has inspired and amazed me more than any special effects hollywood flick ever could.

I couldn't agree more. Thanks for the tip on Anime Planet. I will be sure to use it for my tastes.

Just in case there's any ambiguity by movies I meant the Studio Ghibli affair, not Hollywood blockbusters. Stuff like Princess Monoke (or however you spell it) et al have proven that animated film is as good as anything that the 'west' produce. My point being that I have no problem finding quality full-length animated features but most anime series seem to be of the up-skirt fan-service variety. There's exceptions (Serial Experiments Lain is one I've watched that I was greatly impressed by) but it seems to me you have to trudge through a sea of sh*t to find the gems. I find that less of a problem with TV.

As far as TV's concerned, in the last 12 months we've had great shows like Luck, Hell on Wheels, Justified, Castle, Treme, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, It's Always Sunny in Philadelpia, Breaking Bad, Sherlock, Luther and probably tons more that I can't think of. TV has never been this good.

I'll give that site a look

That is fine and perhaps true as I haven't been up to date with new anime. The same can go for an argument that books are better then manga, comics visa versa. This is an interesting thread all right but it is far too opinionated. I do like TV but I just wouldn't be bothered watching series no matter how many times I have been told they are really good, ok I might watch one or two episodes but I wouldn't keep it up and I just don't really get a kick out of them. That could be the exactly same if you are trying to get someone into anime, its each to their own. To me anime is alot then just series, it is artistic expression. I just stick with anime, books and other things in life I enjoy and TV is lower then the scale but that is me though.;)

What do you mean 'too opinionated'? My opinion is too much, you mean? Maybe I'm treading a thin line here but I don't really hate anime. I'm not here to troll.

TV, especially premium TV like HBO, is all about artistic expression. There's plenty of art in The Wire and Sopranos. It's not all gratuitous sex and violence. And books are on another plane altogether. Whatever about anime being better than TV I definitely don't believe that manga is better than literature. That for me is the zenith of artistic expression.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come across as "this is better what not", I don't want to sound arrogant and everyone has the right to express opinion so maybe 'opinionated' was the wrong word to use. It wasn't my intentions. The point to my post was it is simiply each to their own. When you have threads like this people tend to get hot headed (not saying you were) it is just the topic and people can feel very strong about these things. I understand they are alot of rubbish in anime/manga but really it is the same with everything and I am not saying it is perfect I just feel strong about it like you do with TV so apologies if I went up the wrong brush. Again each to their own.

That is very true what you said about TV and film can be artistic expression. I feel anything can be if the person feels very strong about it.

What is real animation? ...and Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro are considered by many to be some of the greatest movies of all time.

Bizarre statement. Another opinion from somebody who doesn't even have a clue about what they're criticizing.

I'm going to say the idiotic fanboys/girls. They make the rest of us look bad, as do overly fanservicey shows, and long running, filler packed shows like Naruto and Bleach.

I think if you took the sex and violence out of the mainstream anime it would not be much different to Pokemon.
