ask the pole to wriggle out of the lock.

Tell the Guards, do you have proof of ownership?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,041 ✭✭✭Havermeyer

    Use the spare key.

The Pole got a free car from the Social Welfare as soon as it arrived in the country, so just get them to drive you to a locksmith.

Forget about it OP, it's probably already stolen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,080 ✭✭✭✭Maximus Alexander

Don't worry about it, nature has a way of taking care of these things.

In about a week all that will be left of it will be a bare frame, bent around the pole, and order will be restored.

    Cut the pole down

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,382 ✭✭✭lastlaugh

See if you can bend the wheels now and save someone the trouble later on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,537 ✭✭✭KKkitty

Get a hair clip. Always works on tv and the movies. If not get something to cut through the lock.

That's a pretty scummy thing to do OP. Poor bike, stuck outside in the cold all alone :(

    Back in a while....

You could buy a new lock cheaper than recovering that one?

Flipping Poles, coming over here taking our bikes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭James__10

    A normal bike lock.

Dont think you have much choice but to get one of those we steel saws (the wee manual ones, not an angle grinder) and cut through the lock. Or the pole

How would putting another lock on it help? Make sure the Pole doesn't escape, is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,028 ✭✭✭✭SEPT 23 1989

Tell a locksmith that the location of the bike is "up town":D

It's a bit more high security than a normal lock though, sure even the fella who owns the bike can't open it.

Was thinking that myself but if the gards were to drive past i'd be done for robbing a bike :pac:

Get a slightly longer pole, hook it onto the bike. Push the bike up to the top until it's free. Then get out of the way and let it drop. Simple really.

    Or just buy a car.

Forgive me, but are you worried about the Bike, the Lock or the Pole ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,028 ✭✭✭✭SEPT 23 1989

I think he has a fetish for poles

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,455 ✭✭✭Where To

If it's a lampost damage it beyond repair and then report damage to the ESB.

When they arrive to replace it reclaim you're bike.

    Simple as that.

    *this plan could backfire

Is it a chain or U lock?

Get a bolt cutter and give the lock a bite of it. Then cycle that bike like you stole it!!

I logged in especially to thank that.

OP, I can offer no assistance, just condolence.

Ask the bicycle thiefs to open it for you.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard, somewhere, that if you report it to the guards they have equipment to open the lock.

Otherwise, have proof of ownership, buy a hack saw and write an afternoon off, goodluck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,041 ✭✭✭Seachmall

If it's a padlock you could try to shim it.

If it's a U lock you'll probably just have to break it.

If you have to cut the lock just go to your local Garda station before hand and let them know what the story is. They may be able to help but most likely it'll just save you hassle should they be called to a bike theft happening.

I'd also recommend wearing a fluorescent jacket if cutting the lock, it'll help to stop passer-bys trying to intervene thinking you're a bike thief

    Buy a new bike.

    Normal for where ?

What most places would call normal locks wouldn't last anytime in Dublin.

Who are you going to call ?

Wait for someone to steal it then murder them and take the bike back.

It's always in the last place you look, so start there.

Wouldn't that place then become the first place you look?

No, it'd be the last place, why would you keep looking if you find it? :pac:

A friend of a friend said that he seen a foreigner cycle to a bus stop, get on the bus and just leave the bike on the side of the road. When the driver asked him did he want to bring on the bike he said "No its fine, I'll just get another one off the social welfare". True story.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 380 ✭✭gigawatt

get a hacksaw and cut through it , 10 mins max, i lost the key off my car gearstick lock thingy this;http://www.driving-test-success.com/driving-articles/gear-lock2.jpg
a few years ago and thats what the AA guy did. it was a big heavy bright yellow security lock thing so for a bike lock it'd prob take less time

I got caught 'stealing' my own bike once in Holland. Some clown had locked his bike through my frame around a pole and left it there two days. I told them this and they asked me how they were to know it was my bike. After a bit of back and forth we agreed that I'd leave it 24 hours and if it was still there I could hack away the lock.
