Evening all, went out on a charlie patrol this evening and while the red fella eluded up yet again we did come across a mink on our way back to the car. He popped out of a hedge by a stream where we usually see charlie lurking just as I was about to unload the pump. As quick as I could I let rip at him but forgot that I had a 3" B&P 56gm 0 in the chamber:eek: :D I hit him from about 10 yards so I didn't bother to take a picture to put up, a photo of a pound of mince would have looked just the same! On a serious note though, the more we get the better, I heard of a guy just outside Castlebar who lost over 60 hens last week. There wasn't a single one taken, just all dead. Sure sign of the little bastards:mad:

Cheers gonzor, well I've proved one thing today for sure. 56 gram magnums are reasonably effective on a mink:cool::D

A local lads were saying that their are plenty of them on a river just down the road from and would like to take a few out.

    and stoats.
    Highly protected.

Stoat are highly protected, and as such any talk of killing, hunting, even trapping of them is forbidden.

Please have a read of the protected species list, and familiarise yourself.

I think LR is an experienced enough hunter to know what he is aiming at - the fact that it was next to a river also suggests mink

    Lads,

I hate to be the voice of "doom" everytime, but Pine Marten are also highly protected, and cannot be trapped or relocated unless under license by the NPWS.

Its best be aware of what you can and cannot do to make an informed decision.

i was suggesting that the chickens were killed by pine martin ! mink tend to go for fish and eggs beside rivers and rarely venture near farms or dewellings , that not to say that they dont !

Far from it - if theres any kind of drain near your house a mink will feel very comfortable travelling up it. I've caught plenty in such situations before. Plus I'd say for every Pine Marten knockin about theres at least half a dozen mink. But because they are smaller and tend to keep to dense cover they are much less often seen.

I think you need to sit some mink down and tell them this. They're as brazen as can be and will kill fowl while people watch on, indoors or out.

My in-laws farm is almost a mile from the nearest river or lake. All that run around it are a few drains. In the last 2 years i've killed about 10 mink there:cool:and seen twice that many:mad:
We've found the in the barn, the turf shed, and I even found asleep in the tractor cab once!!! The little feckers are as brazen as you get

So i'll say again. Read the list i linked to above, and refrain from talk of killing protected species.
