Let's move St.Patrick's Day from spring into summer.

    Why?

    1)Better weather.

    2) Enough holidays around Easter anyway!

    3) Too long a period in summer without a public holiday........first Monday in June to the first Monday in August.

New suggested date 12th.July. Both traditions and all people on the island of Ireland to celebrate a New National Day on the same day..............and let's have a new name for it ..........America has a Thanksgiving Day............let's us have a Forgiveness Day.

You don't really need to move the saint's day we could all just organise to get ****faced on a different date.

But St Patrick wasn't born in the summer, he was born on March 17th

Keep it as it is. Don't want it being on the 12th of July. That would not be right.

We should move it to the 18th of March, for some reason I always tend to be hungover that particular date.

At least I'd always have a day off then, and not be stuck in poxy work.
    :pac:

I think we should get the 12th as a North South Co-operation thingy, free day off!

    Hows about them for Oranges!

Move it to a Friday so I can enjoy the hangover in peace.

It's not like Irish people ever need a designated day for being able to drink themselves into oblivion. It's nice to have a day off in March though. That's what I miss about Ireland, the many bank holidays compared to England.

There is only 1 more Public Holiday in Ireland than the UK, last year and this year both have the same amount, owing to the Royal Wedding and the Queen's Jubilee.

Isn't there two more? Paddy's day and the one in October.

Paddys Day should be the second Saturday of March every year with the monday off, this will mean everyone has a long weekend to recover and businesses do not need to sut down mid week for one day. Simples.

This is the kind of post that demeans the the quality of boards.ie.
Why not ask the question about the idea or suggestion rather than about the poster..................of course it's so easy in life with ideas you are uncomfortable with................avoid addressing the question make the person the issue..........so a three word reply chalks the poster another post. I hope some day that this gains a poster negative points!

That's fine where it is and if people want to make it a public holiday it's wonderful that we live in a democracy. Bye the way I don't think it got the prefix of Saint yet.

9 in Ireland, 10 in the North, 9 in Scotland and only 8 in England and Wales.

I say in a spirit of reconcilliation we re-align with our Northern brethren and take The Glorious Twelfth off every year ...

Either that or the 1st Monday in July... whichever causes less controversy :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,698 ✭✭✭✭Princess Peach

Why don't we just celebrate Bastille day. An extra day of drinking, and would create good international relations.

And I like cheese and fireworks.

I was just thinking about this the other day and I too think it should be moved towards the summer months. Ok so this is how I see it St.patrciks day should be turned into a sort of national holiday about a week long,3 days before and 3 after the big day.St.patricks day should be turned into a huge irish event that will attract lots of tourists worldwide. Call it irish heritage festival, shops ,streets, houses put up decorations like you would in halloween, xmas and make a big deal of it ,whole city up in beautiful lights and decorations. Big festivals, parades, concerts by the big artists, music festivals, big markets of all kinds, food fairs, street performers all over the city, free shows, people dress up, fireworks displays, lots of drink , all week long.eat loads of yummy food. People try to speak irish too.
Make it a really fun week and all the kids and teenagers would be off school because itd be during summer and adults could still go out and have a great night after work. us and canada gets thanksgiving, and seeing as we dont I think we should get a worthy replacement not just a one day event but a whole week long holiday. Oh ye and paddys day should get a traditional dinner like the way you eat a special dinner on xmas. any ideas what the special paddys day dinner should, maybe brussel sprouts:p
just a suggestion, I think its be cool:)

Abolish the day completely and just make up a new saint, St. Get The Fuck drunk. 21st of June sounds good.

I think the 12th of July is a great idea for an extra public holiday. Move the August holiday to the end of the month and you have three evenly spaced out holidays during the summer (or what passes for summer here anyway).

Can't do Bastille Day - Sarkozy hates us.

The feast day of St. Patrick can be and has been moved by the Church to avoid a conflict with Holy Week. Having said that I don’t think it should be.

Now that would be something to open the popcorn for. :)

Long Christmas and New year break next major holiday Easter. Not a good time of the year to organize festivals indoor or outdoors. A great national celebration in the middle of July would be an enormous boost to the tourist industry and of course it would be a big attraction to returning emigrants.
