Are Deep Fried/Battered Mars Bars available in Ireland?

I've tasted this odd conundrum before and still am undecided on whether or not I like it. Its a famous Scottish creation (or abomination, if you're opposed to 1000 calories in one snack!) made in the chipper consisting of a Mars Bar that's battered and deep fat fried. Delish right?! I've sampled it couple of times but that was a few years ago.

I've heard rumours that places over here still do them but now I'm in search of truemours!

Where do you know that serves them (if anywhere)?
Have you ever had one? Would you try one?
    What's your thoughts on them?

I think they were designed only to clog Scottish arteries.

Branches of Marsella's chip shops will do them for you too. Like has been pointed out they're very bad for you .... but that said you should try them once just to see what the taste like (which is good btw).

They're not exactly the most difficult thing to cook yourself

Deep fried pizza is way nicer though.. and at least twice as deadly

Use some initiative. Bring a Mars Bar in to your local chipper, ask if they'll batter & deep fry & for how much? If they don't go elsewhere. Chippers aren't likely to turn down easy business or concern themselves with your health.

I'm pretty sure my local chipper doesn't sell anything that's notreally bad for you!!

I bet they're nice with ice cream :D

Surely there's nowhere near 1000kcal in one!?

Skip a step, just bring a mars icecream instead of a mars bar for them to do instead.

1000 just sounds like a cool number to throw around. I'd guess there's around 400 in one, 250 in the bar itself and the rest in the batter.

How did anyone ever come up with the idea of deep frying a Mars Bar? One thing is certain though, it must have been some session beforehand.

Borzas in Sligo used to sell them, although wouldn't reccomend them. Tried one out of curiosty, didn't feel right for the rest of the day, possibilty got my whole recomended weeks worth of cholesterol in one go.

I guess you could say, they put the Mars bar in the deep fat fryer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭dark_shadow

There is 2 places that do them in Waterford. Both Italian chippers. They are supposed to be disgusting!! Better off sticking with the batter sausage!!:D

Munchin's Grill in Corbally, Limerick, do them. Savage tack :D

It was invented in Scotland as a way to increase their fat storage for insulation.

Fusciardis on Capel Street do them. Keep threatening to try one but terrified I'd have a heart attack afterwards.
With regard to where they came from, this is the same country that gave us haggis, need we say more?

Sure that stress will give you a coronary anyway, may as well enjoy the bar at least.

One of the nicest things I've ever eaten, don't knock it 'til you've tried it.

Was up there on a stag night a few years ago and asked for a battered mars bar...they had no mars bars so they did a battered snickers for me...ferkin lovely (along with taco chips and a burger...and about twenteen pints)

Lino's in Mullingar used to do them, don't know if they still do.

Best thing deep fried is a Chimichanga!

First they came for the socialists...

I can imagine the response when I walk into a northside chipper, throw a chocolate bar across the counter and ask yer man to batter it........

Also, would it be battered in the same batter as the fish ? and in the same fish n chips oil ? I'd be tempted if I knew it was in a separate batter and fryer...

Lingi's in Mullingar not sure if they still do them.

No they are not concerned for your health for sure but anyway you don't see them for sale very often, they could well say yes but I have a feeling it would be a no because [according to Maria who runs my local chipper] its not worth ruining the oil over something that isn't that popular or profitable.

I've only had a bit of one once in my younger years and it was just like a chocolate doughnut but with the characteristics of a battered sausage except more absorbent (eew). Was a pound before probably double now. :)

How did anyone ever come up with the idea of deep frying a Mars Bar?.

the Chinese do have fried ice cream on menus so I'd say someone seen that and said I'll try my favourite bar, which they liked even more fried

932 calories in one to be exact. And after all the hype I tried one 2 years ago, absolutley vile (though this may have been due to the chipper I got it in frying all sorts of **** in the same oil).

Even worse though is a "Snickers Cake" - 1250 cal per slice. And over 100 grams of fat.

Solid lard, heated to a temperature where it will cook your food through... then we allow it to cool and solidify again.

Of course, your food has absorbed loads and it is currently solidifying on your arse.

Deep fried Mars.... hmmm, think i shall pass.
