Bill Cullen thinks you should work for nothing, and be grateful for the nothing. Silly old fashioned opinions like his are irrelevant today.

He's (hopefully) getting a van, phone and a job... hardly nothing...

    Use public transport.

    Solutions

    - Get a more economical car
    - Take public transport
    - Cycle 1/2 days
    - Get a job closer to home
    - Move closer to work
    - Ask for a pay rise
    - Get a higher paying job in the same area

There is no public transport outside Dublin so that is not an option. When the government raise taxes on fuel and vehicles they are basically punishing non-Dublin people for going to work.

Cycling is probably not an option outside Dublin due to the distances involved. Moving closer to work is not an option if you've a mortgage. Maybe a more economical car is a possibility but the cost of fuel is still going to be high.

The last two options aren't too easy right now.

So what you suggest that we sent all these people to work as slaves were they have to walk to work in raggy clothes and not fed?

So you telling me that if this guy doesn't go to work he doesn't eat any lunch and he is sitting at home naked?

These costs are the same either way as i doubt he would be required to wear a suit in a job that pays that amount of money. Just looking for excuses to justify this guy being a scounger IMO.

Like i said too many people see the dole as a life style option rather then its reality which is a safety net for you while you look for your next job.

Our governments over the years have been far too lax with this and I really hope they come down strong now and sort it out once and for all and make the dole be what it is supposed to be.

I just find it hard to comprehend that so many think that i work and pay my taxes so that others can have the OPTION of not working.

The dole should not be an option it should only be there to help those who really need it which are those who cannot find any work and those who are (honestly) incapable of working.

Do you really believe the majority of people on the dole are there by choice?

Sweet Jesus, I suppose you think it's just a coincidence then that the number of people signing on and the recession is just a coincidence.

Why are you putting up strawman arguments?

We're talking about people choosing the dole over low paid work.

I'm afraid there are quite a lot of morons around that do believe this.

A lot of the said morons have changed their minds though, mainly due to being made redundant themselves.

Ahh, how life twists and turn on ye.

We're talking about people choosing the dole over low paid work.

The situation mentioned earlier, but simplified:

    You have a family.
Keeping your family fed, under a roof and so on requires X euro.

    Job pays X-10 euro.
Dole plus other benefits pays X-5 euro.

    Not exactly a difficult choice.

The dole will be cut, if you get a job and work hard you might get a salary increase.

With the crazy price of fuel is it worth going to work on an average wage. Its costing me 70 euros a week just to get to work, plus car tax and insurance. Also ware and tare on my Car. I am at the point of working does not pay over the dole. Time to take to the streets Folks.

You're dead right. It's not worth it.

But let's not take to the streets just yet. Let's all just stay in bed and weep.

By the way what's "ware and tare"?

Give me the choice of the dole and I will take it.

    Seriously. Where do I sign?

    At the dole office.

I'm not eligible. But I'd really love to sign up.

If enough Boards.IE members want to send me money each week - it'd be the same as the dole, just more straight forward. I'll gladly quit my job and take the dole payments.
