Playing Black Ops or MW3 on a PC

    Hi there,

I've been introduced to MW3 on the Wii, but issues with it connecting online have caused me to look elsewhere to continue playing it!

I have a PC, and I was wondering if the spec of the PC is good enough to play either Black Ops or MW3 ( or even both ). I just wanted to check before I spend any money. I know both games have 'min specs' on them, but I've never really trusted those panels, and anyhow, I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to PC games and all the differences between graphics cards etc.!

So, my PC Spec is as follows :

Intel Core 2 Quad at 2.5Ghz
    6Gb DDR2 400Mhz Ram
    ATI Radeon HD 4850 512Mb GDDR3
    DVD Drive
    20" Flat Panel
Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit with DirectX 11

Would that be ok for these two games? The PC is about 2 years old I think.

Also, what are the controls like for Black Ops and MW3 on the PC? Is it keyboard and mouse, and is that difficult to use?

    Thanks a lot!

    J.

PC is fine for both games. Black Ops is a little more intensive on the PC but you should run it at medium-high no bother, MW3 should run on high settings. :D

Excellent, thanks a lot for confirming that for me!

Well, your advice was right, and I'm now playing Black Ops on my PC and I'm pretty happy with how it looks. I'm a complete newbie to Call Of Duty ( and to any FPS since Wolfenstein 3D really !) so it's a steep learning curve, trying to get used to a keyboard / mouse and trying to get used to online! I've only done Combat Training so far, with the idea that hopefully when I do start playing properly online I won't be completely useless! Trying to get my head wrapped around all the different weapons, attachments and perks!

Just a couple of quick questions though. It feels like my character moves ( not sprints ) a lot slower than the other characters, both in Campaign and Multiplayer ( Combat Training ). Is that normal? I've heard the switching to the Pistol helps you move faster, is this true?

Secondly, I keep seeing online that the best control option is Keyboard & Mouse, but I'm finding it very hard to get used to them! Why exactly are they so much better than a game pad, and is there any particular layout that works well, especially for a Newbie?

And finally, if I buy an attachment ( saying the Double Magazine one ), is that just for one gun? Or would I have a double mag on other guns too? Is there any guide out there as to which guns / attachments / perks to get and which to avoid?

    Thanks in advance!

Woohoo :P Glad you got it sorted and running fine.

Just a couple of quick questions though. It feels like my character moves ( not sprints ) a lot slower than the other characters, both in Campaign and Multiplayer ( Combat Training ). Is that normal? I've heard the switching to the Pistol helps you move faster, is this true?
hmm, unless your using a LMG you should move at about the same speed. Wouldn't really run about with your pistol tho, since you'll get caught with it out more often than not. Theres always lightweight and marathon, but still.. you probably wouldn't really notice the difference. Just get used to sprinting move often.

Secondly, I keep seeing online that the best control option is Keyboard & Mouse, but I'm finding it very hard to get used to them! Why exactly are they so much better than a game pad, and is there any particular layout that works well, especially for a Newbie

Keyboard and mouse is just far better for shooters, with the mouse you can be much more accurate than you'd ever be with a control. Plus theres no aim-assist on PC so even if you were better with one on a console than you are currently with the mouse.. you'll be a lot worse with the gamepad on PC.

I'd highly recommend spending a few quid on a decent mouse/mat. The difference between a standard office mouse and a gaming mouse/mat is huge. If you decide to get one, i can give you my recommendation.

If you have a gaming mouse then its just going to take time and practice to get better with your aim, like with anything your new at. As for keyboard layout, i'd stick with the default WASD movement and then bind your keys around that. It takes a little getting used to but eventually everytime you sit at a computer your left hand will automatically be setup for gaming !!! I can always tell a PC gamer by how they relax their hand on the keyboard !

    Space = jump , shift = sprint/steady, e = melee etc

And finally, if I buy an attachment ( saying the Double Magazine one ), is that just for one gun? Or would I have a double mag on other guns too? Is there any guide out there as to which guns / attachments / perks to get and which to avoid?

Its just for that one gun, cash is pretty easy to come by in BLOPS, so you should beable to buy new stuff for your favorite guns handy enough. Not really a guide but a list of perks etc http://www.cod7blackops.com/perks/

Personally, i'd recommend using either Blast shield or Ghost (Until you get better at the game) in tier one, Slight of hand in tier 2 and either tac mask or marathon in tier 3 depending if you find yourself running about alot. Guns, the famas/MP5/commando/galil are all good choice.. i'd also recommend sticking with the siliencer, dual mags is great if your going on big streaks, extended mags are great if you can kill groups of enemies.. siliencer is great all round and will keep you alive longer.

Shame you didn't get MW3, could have played a few games with me. Maybe give you some pointers, and at least you wouldn't end up in completely unbalanced teams.

I can't answer the second question but I'll try the other two :p

Yes you'll run faster with a pistol. Run speeds depend on what type of weapon, Light Machine Guns (LMGs) will have a slower run speed than an Assault Rifle but an AR will be slower than a pistol. Obviously using Lightweight will increase the overall speed at which you can run with a weapon and Marathon will increase the time you can sprint for, depending on its pro variant being unlocked or not.

You buy attachments for the gun, say dual magazine for the AK47, it'll be unlocked for the AK47 forever (it'll be reset once you prestige and you have to buy all/any attachments again ;)). You can use say dual magazine with a red dot sight if you use the Warlord perk, that lets you use 2 attachments (you cannot use certain attachments together, however, such as Grenade launcher and any attachment, or flamethrower and shotgun (both are underslung attachments)).

Certain guns are better stats wise, but it's all down to personal preference.

    My favourite loadout was;

AUG - Extended mags (recoil was manageable eventually).
    Python - Speed reloader

Lethal Grenade - Frag (can cook it).
Tactical Grenade - Stun (faster throw)
Equipment - C4 (lob in a window to clear campers)

    UAV
    Counter UAV
Napalm / Blackbird depending on the game-type.

...As I said that was my personal favourite, people will of course say otherwise, half of the fun is experimenting with combinations :D

Excellent, thanks for all your advice! A Gamer mouse / mat might be possible down the road, but probably not yet, it depends on cost! But I'd still appreciate any recommendations so I can have a look, thanks!

I actually do have MW3, it was bought for me on the Wii for Christmas. I really enjoy the campaign on it, but so far have been unable to get it online. However, it interested me enough to go get a CoD game for my PC, and I went with Black Ops as I really didn't want to have two copies of the same game, so at least I'd have a different campaign etc.!

I do like the Combat Training idea in Black Ops, for us complete newbies it's a very handy way to get used to online play ( and getting killed a lot ) without it really 'counting' for anything. Then, when I get better, and figure out which perks / guns / attachments work for me, I can go online properly. do you know if there's still a very active Online community on the PC for Black Ops, or has MW3 completely taken over?

    Thanks again!

Im not entirely sure with blops. Steam stats suggest its much smaller than MW3, but theres still a good 7/8k people on atm. MW3 has peak of about 60-70k. But im sure the dedicated servers are much better on BLOPs, and im not sure if thats a full count or what.

This is the mouse i got http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-200-LG

Its quite cheap at £25(30euro?) and is imo one of the best gaming mice about, doesn't look like a rocket either so thats a plus !

Plenty of mats on that site aswel that are great. I paid £14 for this one and think its brilliant.. its pretty huge tho ! There are quite a few £10 mats that are equally as good but smaller if space is an issue.

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-000-BB&groupid=702&catid=32&subcat=

Don't worry too much about getting killed lots online ! As long as your having fun, you'll pick it up quick enough.

Basically you can level from 1-70 in Blops (1-80 in Mw3) and once you're at that level you can choose to stay like that, or go back to level 1 and prestige (1st prestige). You loose all your guns, attachments and killstreak unlocks, and gain either a title/emblem (in black ops) or a prestige token (Mw3 - Can be used for various things, such as title/emblem, double exp, unlock a gun early etc.). There's 15 prestiges in Black Ops and 10 in Mw3, but they're completely optional, some people like having to go back and maybe learn a new gun they never used before or keeping the game "fresh", some people prefer not prestiging.

use the combat training to learn the maps too.The bots wont really show you how real life players move thriough the map but at least you'll know how to get from one place to another

Once again thanks for all the advice & help, it's much appreciated!

Definitely like the look of that mouse, it's a decent price and like you said, doesn't look like a stealth fighter! I'll check out the old bank balance.

Good idea about using Combat Training to get used to the maps, and it's also good to know that Black Ops is still being played!

And now I know what Prestige means! :)

Are there any people on here playing it, for when I make the leap onto real MP?

    Thanks!

    J.

Well, I've made that leap onto real MP, and god I'm dire! I reckon I get about 2-3 kills a game compared to about 15+ deaths. Still trying to get used to the controls, but I just seem to die quicker than the other players ( i.e., I'm shooting at them, they at me, I die first ).

I followed a guide online and went with a SMB, with Silencer, and then Ghost, Steady Aim and Second Chance. Ghost so I'm not as easy to find to kill, Steady Aim so I can shoot from the hip and not have to aim down the gun, and Second Chance to give me a better chance of surviving. Haven't got any to Pro yet. I like the Ghost, and the Second Chance, but I might go with Warlord instead of Steady Aim & get a grip or dual mags as well as a Silencer.

I do think I need to change gun, and I still have to get the money for a better mouse. Right now I'm glad I'm not being booted off the game by the other players on my Team ( I play TDM ) as my K/D isn't helping them at all...

It will take a while so don't be too put off with your score !

Im not sure what an SMB is tbh, but i'd really recommend using either the galil or commando, both with siliencer. Very easy gun to control with little recoil. I would probably stick with ghost and steady aim (IF you tend to hipfire a lot, if you don't... try slight of hand, its easily the best second tier perk once you get a little better). Warlord is a good option too, incase you really prefer red dot sights and the like.

For 3rd tier, i'd really recommend dropping second chance, the only thing it really does is anoy people ! And probably make them want to stab you in the face :D

Tac mask is what i'd suggest using, while it might take you a good while to get hte pro version, it will be well worth it.

Also, don't worry about your team ! Everyone was a noob once, i was worse than horrible when i first started playing cs.

    Thanks for your reply!

My Scuba Diving must have been intruding into my Gaming, instead of SMB I meant SMG! I'm nowhere near the Levels needed for the Commando or Galil, but I think I will try an assault rifle, maybe the M14.

I can't decide about Steady Aim. Maybe I should just start aiming down the gun and go for Sleight of Hand instead. I've goggled Second Chance and you're right, a lot of people find it annoying. I do like it though, for a newbie it really helps get a couple of extra kills, and when I get to Pro and can be revived, it should mean a couple of less deaths as well!

I guess I just need to keep on playing, I might go into Combat Training and try a different gun / perk to see. Thanks!

Well, I played a few games using the M14, and while it was Combat training, so easier, it still made a huge difference! Much better at killing with that gun. I'll try it online proper and see how I get on.

A quick question though. If I'm using a supressor I understand that my 'shots' don't appear on the radar. But if I'm shooting at someone, and they're shooting back at me, and they don't have a supressor, do their shots appear on their team's radar? In other words, the enemy team don't see my shots, but they see their own team mate's shots, so therefore at least know there's a gunfight going on. 'Cos if that's the case, I don't see the point of the supressor really, unless I get to kill someone without them getting a shot off.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

Your teammates are always on your radar, so they don't really know theres a gunfight going on. Supressor will really help you from dying when theres more than one enemy about. It also helps with recoil and such.

Hi lads just to add a recommendation if i may.

Try out one of these, its a gaming surface, way better than any mouse mat ive used and its huge.
Combined with a decent mouse its excellent,, Magils suggestion is perfect [im using the old MX 518 for years] your aim will become silky smooth.
Its also currently the cheapest ive seen in quite a while.

Yep, I think that's the mat that Magill recommended as well. It looks excellent, but is just far too big for my desk

I bit the bullet ( pardon the pun ) and ordered the mouse he recommended, along with a different mat which is smaller and has really good reviews. Seems to be a good delivery service with Overclockers and I should have it tomorrow. Hopefully it'll make some difference, though obviously practice is the most important thing. I do think the extra buttons on the mouse will help, as I won't be trying to press a button on the keyboard and getting the wrong one!

I'm slowly getting there with MP, but I'm still pretty dire. Getting lots of weird comments online too, one guy advised me to 'Uninstall CoD'! :) Another guy kept calling me a camper and telling me to leave. Considering that I used to constantly run everywhere around the maps, and now I constantly run / walk while crouched everywhere around the maps, stopping only before going around a corner or into a doorway, I'm not sure where he's coming from with the 'camper' accusations. Of course, both guys started doing this after I was lucky enough to kill them ( and I do mean lucky, my average K/D is probably around .2!! )

Trying hard to unlock Ghost Pro, I've come close to taking out a Sentry Gun twice now. Still trying to decide what other Perks are good for me, I'm thinking of moving away from Steady Aim as I'm ADSing more, and while I have 2nd Chance Pro unlocked, I'm probably gonna move away from that too. It seems to piss too many people off ( well, people on the other team in TDM anyhow! ) and there's no really use for it in FFA as there's no-one to revivie me.

Protip for ghost, run Ghost + Hacker, and run Sentry gun yourself. Get to the sentry gun killstreak and throw it into the enemy spawn, hope one of them takes it and lob a smoke grenade to conceal yourself as you run towards the sentry.

Nevermind the hate comments. Haters guna hate :pac:

Campers only really annoy me when they're really high level players. It's understandable for players completely new to CoD its understandable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,341 ✭✭✭jasonb

Thanks for that tip. Of course, it is depending on me getting the Sentry Gun Killstreak, so that could take a while! :) As would finding the 'enemy spawn', especially finding it and not getting killed! Does having Hacker mean I can then see the Sentry Gun on the map? I think I've seen them on the map once or twice before, could that be from my team having a spyplane up?

Yeah, some guys just want to give out about anything, and the Internet is the ideal place for them. Even though I am definitely a newbie, and not running around killing everyone, I still think I'm actually not camping. Maybe I have a different definition than everyone else? I might be running towards a corner, and I stop before going around it, and an enemy comes around it and I kill him. His kill cam shows that I was crouched around the corner, and he screams 'Camper!'. Or my team has a spyplane up and as I stop at a doorway I see that there's an enemy coming from the other side, and I crouch and kill him. And he screams 'Camper!'.

I would have thought Camping is picking a spot and staying there for a few minutes, not stopping for a few seconds?

Take it as a compliment, I tend to shout "F*cking camper!!1" even if a guy is running and kills me :pac:

Camping, at least in my eyes, is sitting in a corner with a claymore covering their arse aiming down sight at a door or whatever waiting for someone to run by. There's "tactical defending" which I admit to doing, such as holding down a room, alternating between the access routes defending a bomb site, or a high traffic area.

Hacker shows enemy equipment as a glowing red shape. It'll help you find any sentry guns that are called in. You'll be able to see claymores, tactical insertions, sentry guns and grenades glowing.

Im not entirely sure what my dpi setting is, i think its on the 3rd highest. You'll want it so its not to slow or quick. When ur ingame have it so you have to move ur hand at about say 10inches yo make a 180. Low sensitivity in general is much better than a high sensitivity.

You can't use those buttons ingame. I should be on later aswell.

Ah nice one, thanks! I was thinking that, it's about finding a balance between being able to turn quickly enough, but still being able to aim well.

And for once, I have some advice to give! :) You can use those buttons in game. If you download Logitech's Game software for that mouse, you can set up a Black Ops profile ( in fact, it'll detect you have Black Ops installed and set up a default profile for you ). Then you can edit that profile, assign commands to those buttons ( I was thinking Lethals, Tactical and Equipment ), set the Profile as 'Persistent' and then it'll work in the game.

Of course, that does mean that you can't then change the DPI while playing ( which is what those buttons normally do ) so that makes it even more important to pick a DPI setting you're happy with I guess...

Should see you on later again so! We can find a quiet section on a large map and get that bloody Sentry Gun if you want! :)

Found this online and thought some of you might find it handy. It's by GeForce but nearly all the tips they give regarding settings aren't graphic card specific.

    http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Guides/blackops-tweak-guide

I ran through it myself and lo and behold I am able to play Black Ops on much higher settings than I thought I could ( I basically just installed it and away I went, never really looked into it ). Now I have it running at 1600 x 1200 with everything pretty much on the highest setting, and still getting framerates in the 50s in MP. So it looks a lot sharper and more detailed now! :)

Unfortunately, that hasn't made me a better player though! :) Still getting a K/D ratio of around 0.3. Have played a few Tactical Crouching games, which at least are slower paced which helps me, but no matter what I play, it feels like everyone else can aim accurately and fire & kill me so much quicker than I can. Sometimes it just feels like someone sees me and gets a headshot almost instantly. It's all about practice I suppose, though I'm still trying to suss out the best DPI for my mouse, and the best 'in game' Mouse Sensitivity. I figure I may as well set it to a good setting and get used to it, then get used to a bad one & have to change again later! :)

I had to install a config aswel. Think it just changed the cpu settings. Smooth as anything now at max settings.

Practice makes perfect :) gotta remember some pc players have been playing shooters on pc for 10+ years. Aim transferable well between games.

What was that config you installed, can you remember?

    Thanks!
