Yes as Rover James posted recently, we really need more at least half-decent cars. Please folks, forget about scrap ready bangers.

If the car has an issue, don't post it here
If the car does not have an NCT, don't post it here

Please only post cars that you would actually buy and drive yourself, without feeling ashamed

    That's all!

i got a 98, great car to drive, 20 euro will get me around 56 miles,

If your getting only 56 miles per €20 at todays petrol prices that only circa 21 or at best 22mpg

Re-reading that today makes me glad I didn't buy that car - I get almost double that mpg from my now dead alfa

    But thanks for the comments

  • Registered Users Posts: 112 ✭✭FortyMedals

Not fantastic mpg for a 1.6 would you say? Depends on whether its town/city driving or motorway driving though and your driving style and to a lesser extent a few other variables.

Its not very scientific but at todays unleaded prices I reckon I get over 80 maybe closer to 90 miles for €20 in a 1.6 vvti avensis. That equates to a ball park figure of 32 mpg (I'm Irish, not European so don't bother with this litres per 100 km malarky or whatever they call it;)) which ain't super really. 70 of those miles would be motor way driving. The remainder would be short journeys in built up area.

If your getting only 56 miles per €20 at todays petrol prices that only circa 21 or at best 22mpg

Love driving it tho, it was the car i learnt to drive in :/ but, i do a lot of city driving, small bit of motorway driving too, was a very good car to learn in tho,it just felt right,(got used to it) but NCT and tax is up soon, going to get the NCT and will just sell it off, want a bigger car, so will get what i can for it,
will go after something like a Mondeo, thanks for the post!

All the Toyota's W123-80's. I'd never guess you were a Mercedes man:)

Mileage is only a figure on them corolla's. If you mind them they will go for forever and a day. Having said that though the seller should mark in the mileage.

Toyotas have a close place in my heart..!!

I just think that particular model of corolla are close to perfect bangernomics. Simple mechanics, reliable, economical, cheap and perfectly acceptable to look at.

That's often said here, but what's the problem with it? You have zero come back in a private sale anyway.

I would shy away from selling a car in a situation like in case the buyer pays with fake cash or there is another reason you need to go after the buyer...

unkel, conducting yer business (buying or selling where wads of cash are present) is a no no in public places like service station, car parks etc....

    see here.....

Looks a good car with low mileage. Is it worth a look as it could be converted to comm. for cheap tax.

fresh NCT and a sprinkling of tax. looks like a decently spec'd one too, might be nice for a grand. provided the hidden mileage isn't a total shocker.

I can vouch for that, I bought a 96 1.3 one after my beemer shat itself. Bought in December for 750, with nct til Feb 14 and 116000 miles on it.
I just passed 125k and it does 40mpg and above regardless of how I drive it, its rediculous. Not a single problem with it, except in that time it has taken about 1l of oil which is absolutely fine by me.

My only gripe is the petrol tank is tiny, its 40L, which does about 360-390 miles which is about 50 less than my weekly commute.

It was planned as an interim car but after about 3 weeks I got so used to it I said feck it I'll do a year of bangernomics, next year is gonna be an alfa 156 for bangernomics money/ LPG luxobarge, I'm completely converted.

Id love a 156 sportwagon but am doing similar milage to yourself, so kinda wary about taking the plunge on one - do you think she would be reliable/eco enough for that kind of milage?

Non turbo Daysul. Slow but, very economical
    nct 03/14 taxed till 05/13

    1. Reliable: from what I can gather the TB & suspension components need to be changed regularly, so it is definitely not the ideal car to be doing high mileage in from that point of view.

    2. Fuel economy: around 30mpg seems to be the estimated typical consumption of them, so 25% more than my corolla. So also not ideal.

My train of thought is: I had a bmw before which had all the issues of the alfa less the TB, and am now saving myself one years worth of money that would otherwise be used on consumables/petrol in the bmw by driving the corolla.

So if I was smart & doing it purely on finances, I would be mad to even consider the alfa, but the year in the corolla is my way of justifiying whatever expenses I incur driving the Alfa & enjoying driving again.
Also nice to consider the lack of depreciation on 156's at this stage, they cant get any lower.
