The Lancer's and 323's seem horrid to some people (many users on here) because we like cars and clearly those are not made for people who like nice cars with good powerful engines and a luxury interior coupled with a quality driving experience.

However some people just see a car as transport and these days need it to be as cheap as possible throughout all aspects of car ownership, tax, fuel and purchase price for example. This is where the likes of the Lancer and 323's succeed.

Not for the car enthusiasts on here perhaps but perfect who prioritises other things day in day out and is struggling these days especially coming up to Christmas.

I think they're perfect bangernomics in every sense of the word but I wouldn't drive one myself unless absolutely necessary. :)

I know exactly what you mean, the 6 makes so much more sense from a value and nice to drive/have viewpoint in comparison to the 323s and the Lancer.

However, a car is a car and low purchase price, coupled with low tax and the potential for a few years troublefree, low cost motoring would appeal to so many at the moment who don't have too many €s to spare at the end of the week/month etc and who can't do without a car :)

Realistically the financial situations of so many at the moment might make a €900 323 just about feasible whereas the few hundred extra to buy the 6 coupled with the extra motor tax makes it impossible.

A friend does some work with SvDP on the ground and the stuff on the news about food poverty amongst working people (with kids) etc doesn't appear to be at all rare from his experience :(
I'll make my usual comment that the USC (or whatever the feck it's called now) is an absolute disgrace.

    Then

I'll be honest, I'd love the 6 but the 323's would make more financial sense to me right now.

Let's face it, how much worse than 1.3 litre Corolla can one be?

My sister bought a €600 Carisma last March with the intention of driving it for a few weeks, she's not at all into cars but only bought it as her Ka died beyond economic repair and no public transport suited her needs.

She still has it now and despite not liking it the car does the job fine :)

She's intent on spending a decent lash of €s on a Mini when she gets around to getting around to it.

Looks good but bargain hard anyway. It is quite possible that could be one of the few last MK 3's that is reasonably straight and not worth scrap metal.

The 1.4's in those have been going for years too and are supposed to be a ''soft engine''. I'll let other more knowledgeable folk on here give you the run down on the reliability of the engine though.

Looks clean anyway and best of luck. :)

May actually be giving some of the cars in this thread some serious consideration in the next few weeks, might have to dip a toe into bangernomics to get to and from work, I'm liking the look of the accord coup's that have started to pop up for small money, and the odd Mazda 6.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭Bigus

More like swankynomics , some value here if you were that way inclined €3400

Ok its no M3 but its RWD 220 bhp over 300 torques and prob handy enough to insure, and not even run in with low Km's

And please don't state the bleedin obvious and post about the tax !

I'd have hoped that it was diesel though. Would suit that car so much better tbh. Reckon he's gonna have a hard time shifting that yoke.

Unless you reckon you'd get 1400 off that car doesn't belong in here.

    Low miles. Leather. Auto.

Love the Saab. I know you'd need to check the sump etc. but if it's been serviced properly, that'd be a drive it til the wheels fall off job for me.

    Italian plates ;)

If the owner took the photo a little lower, we could all see where in Italy it was registered

2003 Facelift 156 Ti with NCT until 10/13 and recent timing belt for €1450!
    View2-15805617.jpeg

Fantastic value if proof of timing belt can be obtained and the tensioners were done at the same time. Ti so high spec with a lovely leather interior.

I'd be tempted but I really don't want a silver car again and I prefer the rear end on the pre-facelift. Facelift front end is nicer though!

Cheap tax and NCT exempt, highly likely to be half w@nked and/or half rotten though :pac:

I know where you're coming from, but I can't at all agree :)

If you really, really need a car and the money is very, very tight, you should get a €400 Micra 1l with full test. Not a 1.3 / 1.5 banger that will cost a lot more than said Micra in everything (tax, petrol, insurance, maintenance, etc.) to run

If you have a bit more per month to spend and a few hundred more up front, skip the in between banger and go for a d-segment car like the Mazda 6 in your link. These cars are relatively the best value for money in the Irish market

On other news: I've my Saab 9-5 a year this week :)

Cost: €1,350 (I'd get pretty much all of that back today if I were to sell it)
    NCT + retest: €83
    4 wheel laser alignment / tracking: €40
    Battery: €85
Battery for remote central locking key: €2
New return valve for cooling system + labour + coolant fill: €65
Fully synthetic oil + filter for oil service: €40
Oil filler cap with integrated dip stick (scrap yard): €5

Total fixed cost for the year (excluding fuel, tax, insurance): €320 or €27 per month :)
