Talk about falling asleep on the job.

    Incompetent.

PLEASE STICK TO THE THRUST OF MY POSTING - THE SUBJECT BEING AN INCOMPETENT ON AUTOMATIC BEHIND A TILL, THANKS. ALL THE RESPONSES HAVE GONE DOWN A PREDICTABLE AVENUE
A 21-YEAR-OLD Romanian man was engaged in "skillful theft" by confusing bank cashiers while exchanging money, Sligo Court heard.

The man was said to be "part of a machine that was robbing banks and sending money out of the country." And although he had no obvious source of income, he was able to fly in and out of Brussels as well as produce thousands of euro whenever ordered by the court to do so.

Rindas Horobas, Monlea Grove, Firhouse, Tallaght, Dublin 24, was fined €1,000 on a charge that on June 7th last at Bank of Ireland, Stephen Street, Sligo, he induced a bank teller to exchange £1,200 into euro equivalent, then requested €50 notes and then wanted it exchanged into £50 Sterling, and in doing so retained €700, deceiving the bank of that amount.

He was also fined €1,000 on a charge that on June 8th last at Bank of Ireland, Diamond, Carndonagh, Donegal, he induced a teller to exchange £920 Sterling into euro, and afterwards wanted €1,000 in Sterling "with the Queen's head", and retained €550, deceiving the bank of that amount.

The day prior to Sligo Court, he had appeared in Carrick on Shannon court.

Sligo court was told that the defendant was "operating a threecard trick".

FFS it's obvious what this guy is up to

Next time he leaves for Brussels he should be refused entry on his way back in...

Never mind the bank teller, is this criminal allowed stay in the country or has he been turfed out yet ?

Oh its obvious. Easy to pull the wool over 'Paddy or 'Brigid's eyes. Don't say much for the gullible teller does it though. Been too long in the job? Sack him/her, ferry him.

    Oh for god's sake.

Look, the bank doesn't ever lose, they'll just pass a loss on to the customer either way.

This isn't some Robin Hood style situation.

They need to hire Max Clifford or some other PR guru to spruce up their image.

It's not explicitly stated that this guy is a Roma but from the story and the quotes such as 'villainy and skullduggery' and 'den of thieves' it can probably be safely inferred.

Without out getting a 'lesson' in Political correctness by the do-gooders but Romas can infact be Romanian and a high percentage are in fact Romanian.

I know the difference but I was answering another post that said Roma but I was refering to the op which was about a Romanian. Point still stands about negative and positive news stories.

Note how I made my point without having to use a rolleye.

Yes, but since the story is about a romanian, it could be either, as a higher percentage of romanians are not roma.

Of course it might be either, that's a given. However the media is so politically correct now it will never report that a "Roma" did xyz, just the same way that the media has, for the most part, stopped reporting that "traveller" families did xyz.

I work retail in a garage where for much of the time it's just myself there. I have Pakistani, Romanian and Indian colleagues. All grand lads that I've become friends with. I don't consider myself racist but you can if you want to...7

Every time a group of Roma come into the shop (they always come in during the day when it's just one staff member on duty) the place gets fleeced. The split up and with nobody to keep an eye on them they have free reign. If it's quiet I can try to keep an eye on them but it's normally busy and I don't realise they've even come into the shop until they're strolling out with skirts and bags full of food and valuables.

It's part of their culture to steal, beg, deceive and not integrate with anyone outside of their community.

The democracy loving die-hard in me would hate to see the day when one group is targeted with facist like forced emigration etc... But I've yet to hear any suggestion that could solve the problem.

If anyone has any I'm all ears.

Yes, but read up on the likes of intersection and subset. Not all Romanians are Roma, even if all Roma were Romanian...

It's important to point out the difference.

I've found Romanians to be of great character - quite like the Irish actually. Come from a country of troubled past but always up for a laugh and a sing-song.

Roma are an ethnic group spread over quite a few eastern-european countries. While they do have dense concentrations in Romania, I think the only reason Romanians are often confused to be them is the similarity in name.

    Romanian =/= Roma.

Yeh the customer.... as in you... the guy robbed less than a grand (IIRC), the bank will hit the savers long before they will ever (indirectly) hit me to get their profits back.

ANd in the mean time they have the embarrassment of getting duped out of it so easily. So yeh, Im glad it happened.

It might even force them to improve their systems & procedures and in the long run save them money.

Indeed, and have you ever heard of someone pausing to do something mid post then hitting 'Submit 'Reply' not realising that someone else has posted a similar response in the mean time?

I can explain further and walk you through the scenario if necessary.

The guys on the front desks at banks are effectively cashiers.

Anyone who has ever worked for over a year in retail has been fooled by a scammer at least once. I was - by €50. Only copped what he did around an hour later when it popped into my head.

During a busy day, they pick the cashier that looks a little tired. Casually fluster him and the poor guy won't even realise he's missing nearly a grand till he's cashing up his till.

The likely outcome was probably a poor appraisal / performance assessment rating for that year. They may also have received a verbal warning and been subject to some form of disciplinary action.

    You haven't a f*cking clue what you're talking about.

    Rindas Horobas gets around.
Trio targeted banks and Post Offices in Tenby, Saundersfoot and Pembroke areas

    10:02am Wednesday 9th February 2011

Three men pleaded guilty to thefts and attempted thefts from banks in Pembrokeshire during a hearing at Carmarthen Crown Court on February 7th.
Rindas Horobas, aged 21 from Dublin; Andre Rostas, aged 21, and Boby Angel, aged 31, both from London, targeted banks and Post Offices in the Tenby, Saundersfoot and Pembroke areas on May 12th 2010.
The three would try and distract and confuse bank and Post Office staff into handing over money. One of the trio would hand cashiers a quantity of money around £500-£1000 and ask for it back in pound coins.
While doing this, the other two would cause a distraction, usually by shouting at each other and when the cashier was temporarily distracted the first man would remove or 'scim' a large amount of the money from the counter, tricking the cashier into paying out more money in pound coins than had actually been handed over.
The case has been adjourned for pre-sentence reports and all three men are due to be sentenced in the next four to six weeks

    why not just refuse entry?

'management reserves the right to refuse entry'

    I'm not management.

I imagine barring an entire ethnic group from a store could backfire somehow...

Besides, like I said, these guys know what they're doing.

There'll be a line seven deep at the till and they'll come in; quick as a flash they're gone. Kids are told to do it too. It's disgraceful.

They won't try it when there's two staff in, it's quiet and we can both keep an eye on em. They know what they're doing as is evident by this case with the bank worker.

Short of grabbing hold of the baseball bat behind the counter and dishing it out, there's not much I can do. :(
