Im having some trouble getting 3 two player buttons going.

Ive a two player setup, 6 buttons each player.

    all player ones work perfect.

on player two. Button 3, 5 and 6 are not working in mame at all.

If i open notepad they look fine, Q, I , K, comes up in notepad when i press them. so the are wired ok.

    any ideas?

dunno what this is. I guess i shouldnt have just jumped straight in. they dont seem stuck when typing in notepad. ie one button press, types one character.

    Yup, grab it here http://ultimarc.com/download.html
whenever I've had trouble with my ipac, I've always found the ipac utility to show a stuck button somewhere

installed that app, they seem fine, if i do a test mode, i press the buttons, the letter comes up. they just dont seem to want to work in mame at all. if hyperspin is loading up and i click them, they work, its just in mame, those 3 wont work.

Can you press the tab button while in a game in mame, & assign them as the default game controls?

would i have to do that for every game? im rebuilding my pc at the minute, i have mame 44 downloaded with all the chds etc. more games work on this for me than the one on the pc. ill give it a go when its rebuilt.

Nope, there are game specific controls you can set, but there are also general settings you can configure which apply to Mame in general

Cool, thanks ill take a look in there, id say thats the issue.

rebuilt the pc there and now cant get the mame wheel to load in hyperspin haha.. a whole new issue. i know ive seen this before but cant remember how to fix it. when you select mame, it goes dark, then instead of loading the game menu it pops back to the main menu.

yeh it was the sound drivers not being installed keeping mame from loading. such a weird one.

When you go to map them in mame nothing happens? Or does it allow you to map them & then lose its config?

I managed to sort out button 3 there. that wasnt letting me map at all in mame. its now working everytime. its letter q when you hit it, and in hyperlaunch.apk it was mapped in there for ending a script or something, i changed that and its grand. so thats sorted now.

button 5 and 6 wont work. i can map these in mame using the tab key no problem and they work. but when i exit mame and go back in they are not retained.

Is your Mame folder etc all set to read/write & not readonly?

Actually, I remember too having to flash my ipac2 with that winpac programe to save the settings. There's a button to programme them in when they're set afaik, ages since I done all this :o

pain the arse, i thought you where onto something there with the read only on the folder, but its still not retaining it in mame. its weird cause they work fine one i put them in in mame, its not retaining the settings.

It seems mame writes the config on exit
Other than making sure you have full read/write permissions to where ever the config files are living, also make sure that you are properly exiting MAME. MAME writes all config options on quit, so if you do a hard power-off to your system without closing MAME first, the session settings are lost.

Did you reinstall the OS? If so, you may have a permissions problem there. I had an issue with my HTPC recently where after a reinstall of the OS, I only had read access to most of the folders.

I had to take ownership of the folders/files, give myself full access, & then remove the old creator account

hmm, i granted everyone full access to the mame folder and subdirectorys. i will mess around with the permissions some more over the next few days. im logging in as admin too. windows 7 is funny though with permissions even the admin account doesnt have full admin rights unless you right click on the exe file and run as admin. ill try doing this aswell to see if that retains the settings.

You need to make sure the account your using is the owner of the files, by taking ownership. Then by adding your account name to the security tab, & granting full permissions.

True what you say re the Admin account. On my htpc, even though I was the admin, I'd no write access as I wasn't the creator/owner. It wasn't until I took ownership & manually granted myself full permissions that I got full r/w access

yeh by default i dont think you can write to anything other than your profile and c:\program files without using elevated privilages.

Correct, & if you've reinstalled the OS sometimes the old creator/owner info is lost, & replaced by a gobbely-gook account name hence the difficulties. It's all fun & games, trust me, you'll miss it when everything is set up correctly :D

yeh, i totally formatted and reinstalled from scratch here, so i dont think ill have any of those mix ups with the ssid's but there is definitaly something stopping mame from saving the buttons. cause they work fine once i map them. its just not holding.

A format won't matter, at least, it didn't in my case. It's like the whole drive kept its attributes, & Windows didn't recognise the owner of the files/folders.

    1) Right click the folder where your Mame install is
    2) Click properties, & then the security tab
    3) Click advanced
    4) Click the owner tab
    5) Make sure your the owner, if not, click edit & take ownership
    6) Go back to the security tab
    7) Click edit, & make sure your account name is there.
    8) If it's not there, click add, type the a/c name in the box, click check names & then add
    9) Once your name is in the list, make sure it's got full permissions.

That should take care of any ownership issues, & at least eliminate the problem & you can look elsewhere
