    Day four of unemployment-

Good day today, I've got over my recent bout of depression. I'm ready to rejoin the dregs of society and be a worker bee again, made some real progress on Jobs.ie, spent 30 minutes looking didnt find anything I liked but it's good to know worst case senario I can just pick one of the crappier jobs to do.

After searching jobs.ie I followed some of your advice and decided I'll do a hobby, Camping.

8 man tent with main area - 360e
    sleeping bag minus 30 degress - 60e
    Trespass jacket - 125e

Cant wait to actually get out, I'll probably wait till May when it gets warm.

The key to the unemployment is to stay positive guys!

What time you going to the airport?

    Is this a piss take?

Instead of taking up jogging or knitting you buy an 8 man tent for 360e which can't be used til May?

What about the 8 months before that? And what's wrong with a two man tent?

And you're ringing up health spas? On the dole! You must have serious savings.

Keep positive, the 8 man tent will come in handy next may, when they can't afford to pay their rent:p

Recent research supports the idea that having no job is healthier psychologically than having a job you hate.

I'd love to see this research too dd972, if you're still on this thread. Who did this research? what methodology did they use? how big was the sample study-that kind of information is needed.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was true mind, I've worked in a few crappy soul destroying jobs in the past that compromised my physical, emotional and mental health that took me a long time to recover from, so I can well believe it may be true that being unemployed for some people may be actually healthier than having a job you hate. Or at the very least no worse than.

I prefer not working to being in a call centre for instance, I'd imagine that it would be different for everyone according to their circumstances.

I couldn't work in a call centre, I wouldn't last very long there for a start and know myself it would almost certainly lead to either serious depression or a mental breakdown and then I'd be back on the dole or disability. It would suck the life blood from me and I'm just not cut out for that kind of high stress monotonous work dealing with irate customers. Plus I have ethical issues about working for those kind of unscrupulous employers.

I've been unemployed before and while I found it initially quite boring I used the time to gain some life and job skills I needed to become (mostly!) self-employed, and to get fit by getting out walking, jogging and cycling-things which I've thankfully kept up ever since.

It's a long tough road and I'm not quite in the position I want to be work wise or financially yet but I'm hoping I will be in the next few years as a portfolio worker *fingers crossed*.

I was unemployed for a couple of years, got a job in January in a absolute sh!t dump but was very happy to be back working, I used to tell the lads that working in the kip would help us appreciate a real job when we get one.

Roll forward to July, 65 of us were let go I was pretty depressed within a week but get cv's out there and asked my friends to keep an eye in places they worked, October I'm now working in a great spot and am so happy..

Some of the long term lads in the place think its crap and are always giving out about it but I know what's out there.

Lesson sh!t jobs are good for your mental health cause you'll really appreciate a good job when you get one.

I don't see how working in a job you hate can ever be said to be good for a persons mental health (it certainly wasn't for me), especially if there is little future prospect of finding or creating a better one. The experience might toughen some people up, but it can break others.

It may make you and others like you more determined to find better work but some people are trapped in jobs they can't leave because of family commitments-being the breadwinner in the family with responsibilities to shoulder-a mortgage and huge bills to pay etc., also fear of being unemployed and never finding alternative employment,-especially in the current climate, because it may be a sh1tty job but it's secure and pensionable employment, and many other reasons why people stay in jobs they hate; but I agree it would doubtlessly make one appreciate finding work that is more personally and professionally fulfilling when contrasting it to a job you hate, yes.

But, in order to reach that point you have to know or at least have a reasonable expectation that there is light at the end of the tunnel when you're in that crappy job and you know you won't have to be there forever.

Edit-forgot to add-congrats on your new job! glad it's something you enjoy doing and it's better than what you previously had :)

    Day 10 of unemployment-

got a job working in my uncles bar, there was a mix up in the job specs though so i quit in the first 5 minutes. My mother was so pis@ed she cancelled my internet for a week. So i was forced to hand out CVs by foot. Tough day not many companies except actual CVs for upper management positions that they wanted them emailed and when tried to explain that my mother cancelled it they wouldn't listen, after being turned down twice i counted my losses with a few punts on the horses and a few pints. I've just joined the rat race to the bottom folks.

Buddy you have ta realise handing them into shops is like pissin against the sea breeze on dollyer. They see you as completion so are basically going ta throw your cv in ta the bin. The only game in town these days is the interet.

Maybe you shouldnt mention your mother interfered in your job hunt. Join the local library if you need to job hunt on the internet, they let you use it for free once you're a member.

    This is most likely true.

Thankfully the post it's in reply to most likely is not ;)

As an aside, I just offered a full time job to a man who turned it down due to social welfare constraints (25 hour working limit).

This is the 4th time in a week that this has happened.

If anyone wants a security job in Tipperary or Offaly, give me a shout.*

*Mods: I will post in Offaly and Tipperary forums too.

    Day eighteen of unemployment-

sorry guys i haven't been able to keep yous posted its been a hectic week. Went to sign on in the local social welfare department, upon entering the place a strong stench of p!ss gripped me followed by the sight of what can only be described as poverty, actual poverty. So i left straight away and said this isn't for me - so i jumped on the internet and got the first plane to south Africa. I don't know why anybody would bother doing the dole buzz when they can just up sticks to where the euro goes a bit further - boggles the mind:confused:

having 40 million on the dole.....is a secret eu directive.....they want to youth to experience it most....that way they will get used to it a lot easier.......

the eu minister for immigration has said the eu urgently needs another 4 million immigrants from outside the eu.....
