Buying 'rounds' of drink while in a pub ...

Was reading the 'stingiest' thread and a few posters mention about a person they know hating to buy the round when it comes to their turn. Which makes me think, How many people do the round thing? Talking about a group like ... (poll included)

For me, I'd always buy my own drink. As would my friends. Sure if one of us was short another would buy a pint no problem. But never the rounds thing and to be honest, I wouldnt be surprised that one or two people I know would take advantage of it. Be ordering doubles for themselves when its someone elses turn to pay but order cheap when it came to theirs.... Or just simply buy a round or two then say they 'dont have the money'

Do you and your friends do the whole 'rounds' thing? 77 votes

    Yes. We do.

We do it very informally usually. If I'm out I usually have to get someone back a drink for the taxi or vice versa and it starts from here.

Voted no as I do9n't more often then I do!
    Depends who I'm with..

Depends really, though mostly do rounds.

The other night I got a round of double vodkas and redbull - 50 quid - Stupid money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,282 ✭✭✭MyKeyG

Only if I was with two, at the most, close friends. If there's a group of us away on a stag or rugby weekend we split into smaller groups or if people want to take care of themselves that's fine too.

Same with restaurants. Pay for what you ate instead of this splitting the bill nonsense. I've seen that go very wrong once or twice.

For some reason that's beyond me there are those that insist on rounds.

10 of us out last Saturday night, everyone drinking Vodkas, JD or some other fucked up concotion, round came to €74.30, I nearly dropped dead there and then. Madness really.

I'm all up for getting rounds and I gladly do it but lately I seem to be getting screwed over with people dodging their round or I'll always be the one to buy one extra round...

Prefer getting my own drink, alot less messy (most of the time that is :p).

Won't mind buying a drink/having one bought for me if we're short, but I'll always reciprocate it the next time we're out.

Nope, gets too confusing, especially as we consume more booze. I'd normally do rounds if I was with one or two friends though.

i do rounds on pints for the games sat or sundays makes sence if yer with the lads watchin the match rather than all goin to the bar, wouldnt normally do rounds on vodka dont reely drink it but as the 50 quid above suggests its a bit of a rip off

Actually, can I ask ya's both a question.
Did you get your monies worth of drink that night tho?

Or would of it worked out cheaper just to buy yourself drink for the night?

No because I was bought 9 JD's and coke but I didn't drink them all because I'd probably be dead :P

Well my friends have got me loads of times before if I'd no money - So it doesn't bother me that much if it is a little off.

I was meeting with friends i havent seen in a while so the occasion kinda took over - Normally its rounds of pints or if theres only 2 or 3 of us we do rounds - Mostly in a club its do 1 round each then every man for himself.

You could have got a fair bit of heroin for that money.

Might do it one or two people within the group, usually stems from paying for the taxi to town or who bought the cans beforehand or some such. Usually the same craic later in the night when people start on the shots and people usually do it in twos or threes.

To be honest, I'd be really surprised if any of my mates did that. I'm sure that over the years some may have ordered a double spirit when everyone else was drinking pints but I never got the impression someone was taking the pi$$.

I like rounds, to be honest. I just feel that it's a more sociable way of going out with your mates. I'd never offence if someone wanted to be excluded from them though (which occasionally happens).

I find you spend way more when you do rounds on a night out. Don't mind doing it with one or two close friends who won't drink too much or go off buying doubles. As soon as I end up with two drinks or a double in my hands I'm out.

You cAnt beat the kitty system. Buy a spAre purse, kitty. Say 10 people are out, each gives 50 and each takes a turn like a round to go buy drinks from kitty, if she runs out everybody tops up by an equal amount. Kitty is used for everything, drink, food, clubs whTever.

Saves a Fortune though I guess more of a girl thing :)

    Huh?

People were buying rounds long before any imaginary tiger came along. Buying a round is the norm for me, but in the last 2 years I have noticed people are paying for their own individual drinks a lot more.

Were slowly getting onto the Vietnamese way of one or two people cover the entire bill.. Last night, I covered over half the bill for 25 people with food and hours of drinking. My friend's leaving thing so it wasn't a big deal.

Same here, although I wouldnt always do rounds, it depends on the people and the circumstances.
I have noticed a drop off in people doing rounds of late, which is understandable given the times we are in and the cost of drink.

Buy rounds all the time but I don't always expect a drink to be bought back. It depends on whether that silent round buying agreement is in place or not!

Not at all. Here kitty kitty.

Rounds are fine when the group is small. When it gets too big and everyone has to get their round in (to avoid looking like they're dodging it) you all end up buying drink that people don't really want.

The kitty thing works really well especially when you're on a weekend away.

    No.
The whole rounds thing goes back years , there was even a Government ad campaign back in the 70's against doing it!(been trying to find a copy of it online).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,551 ✭✭✭SeaFields

Always buy rounds. Its too awkward otherwise as between smokers and going to the bar there would be no one at the table half the time.

Skipping rounds doesn't happen in my group but I imagine if you're drinking with someone who has a tendency to sneakily do it, leave them at home.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 5,402 ✭✭✭Tinie

God no. I don't know any of my mates who do this. Perhaps its more of a older persons thing to do, but I never saw this happening on nights our in college.

There's always one guy though who would take advantage of it though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,595 ✭✭✭Giruilla

I only do it with one other person, or max 2. Gets messy otherwise. It's just nice when your friend gets the beer in and you can stay sitting and likewise.

Typically yep I'll do it. When I'm out with my brothers (and their mates usually), the round can be six or seven people. It's not an issue, everyone gets pints and if anyone even tried to ask for a double or otherwise take the piss, they'd be told to get the boat. Same with my mates, we'll alternate who goes to the bar. If we're on the town and someone wants to change to shorts, we'll usually check with everyone else.

Don't do it with anyone I wouldn't consider a good friend, such as work people. You can't really hound a work colleague into buying their round and give them grief if they're being scabby.

  • Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 23,238 Mod ✭✭✭✭GLaDOS

Never do it, people have different budgets and drink at different rates. Just easier to buy drinks yourself. I'll buy someone a drink and let them owe me one back or whatever, but never do organised rounds.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I dislike these threads so much.

All my mates drink larger, we do rounds generally 3/4 in the group. no one takes the piss.

I do wonder at people who allow others to steal drinks or generally go around to stinge you out of money on doubles call these guys your mates?

Why do you go out with them or know them for that matter if they are such stinge balls.

I dont have this issue with any of my immediate friends.

Used to do it years ago but one day just told people i'll buy my own. Really enjoyed my nights out after that just going at my own pace and saved a fortune too boot.

Used to do rounds but it used to clean my wallet out and I hated waiting others to finish their pints.

Nowadays, I pack a cyanide pill for when it comes to my round. Easy escape! :pac:

I like the system in my local, but could never see it working in Ireland, too many dishonest people imo. You order your first round, sit down, beers dropped down and you'll get a tick on your beermat. New beer gets dropped down when ready and another tick. Everyone drinks at their own pace and at the end of the night you pay for whatever is ticked off on your own beermat.

Always buy in rounds when there's 4 or less people, particularly at the beginning. Then after a while people tend to drop off and go at their own pace. It becomes very relaxed round-buying. i.e. stand up and ask who wants a drink. It all works out in the end, so if you buy a small round, you do another one sooner rather than later.

It all works out in the end, none of us would be scabby or trying to dodge rounds.

I definitely notice that I drink faster in rounds. Not that we're racing or anything, but it definitely promotes knocking off that last 1/4 pint quicker than normal.

I am drunk now as it happens. 10am is the bestest time for that. In work n' all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,013 ✭✭✭kincsem

Its to save a dozen people opening their purses and counting out change for their drink OR a dozen people handing in €50 notes and each expecting change. The night becomes a bit like standing behind the person at the Tesco checkout who is feeding in 1c coins into the machine, and then rooting around in their bag because they just know they have some other change somewhere.

Personally, I prefer rounds as it saves you all having to go up to the bar individually every single time for a drink, especially if it's very busy. Once you've done your round, that's it for 4 or 5 or whatever drinks. Generally, real mates will be conscious of not ordering more expensive drinks if everyone else is just on pints and go seperate in those cases. They certainly would not dodge rounds deliberately and if they did, why would you even drink or be mates with those type of people?

I can understand it getting a bit more awkward when out with your non regular mates - eg workmates or an acquaintance who just happens to have joined the group that night. I coudn't just not offer them a drink just because they were not part of the regular group. Even if I don't get one back in those cases, so be it. You just don't buy them one again!

Depends a lot on who i'm with. 1 of my brothers and prob no more then a handful of mates, becuase we kniw how each other drinks and from there we can pace with ourselves for a few pints without putting pressure on someone to hurry up witb their turn.

But the amont of times it'll go around before we tail off to our own drinking will depend on how many of us there are.

I usually get in rounds with my mates when we head out, it's grand but it gets annoying sometimes if you are finished your drink and you are waiting 20 mins for the next person to get their round.

I went out the other night and decided to stay on my own because the funds are a bit tight. Couldn't believe the money I saved by staying on my own, went out with 100 euro and came home with 50 of it. Going to make staying on my own a regular thing from now on.

    Always do rounds with mates.
    Usually 4-5 of us drinking.

If its bigger than that, we might split the group in two or by table. Not because we're cheap asses, but its easier. A table of people will drink at a closer rate.

Always do rounds. None of my mates are in anyway stingy and everyone pays their way. Sometimes it gets a bit ridiculous in that a round will be called and about 2 or 3 of us will try to pay for it!

Do it with work people too, if someone didn't get theirs in it'd be the last time they'd ever be invited into my 'circle' of drinkers :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,191 ✭✭✭✭Latchy

That's the problem with the drinks round ,somebody either drinks to fast , to slow or nobody sure who's round it is so I choose a smaller round of about 4 people which makes it quicker and easier to get the rounds in especially if it's just pints .You can easy loose an hr of the night just waiting to be served for large round of drinks .

Usually do rounds if theres no more then 5,6 of us out. Anything over that and its not worth it.

Always get my 6 drinks in and if as a group we're still together by the time the round comes around we decide to break ranks and buy our own or pair up with a buddy whose's drinking a similar dink or similar pace to your own.

    Cocktails/Spirits & mixers/Wine - I don't mind doing rounds here cause I can catch up...

Pints - I can't catch up so no point getting rounds in...
