A friend of mine is in london at the minute and is coming home for christmas.

If i got her to buy me a new scope over there can she just put it in her suitcase and bring it home or is there more to it than that?

Its just a bushnell scope without mildot or illuminated rectile or anything fancy lie that.

    Yes.

Its within the EU, and an "open market" so no tax/duties/restrictions involved.

I bought a 12x power, mil-dot, illuminated reticle online and got it sent to me from the UK.

Should be no bother, BUT, I cant confirm that. Ring your local guards barracks or the customs office and they'l be able to point in the right direction
    on that info :)
    - Just saw the last post. Looks like your'e good to go.

But I would recommend ebay. Search 'Tasco rifle scope'... there is an abundance of scopes on there in all different specs being sold by loads of different sellers. The one I bought cost only 40 or so euro's over all including postage, and its the dogs ********. Obviously bushnell and the ones you buy in shops would be of a slightly better quality, but the tasco I am using seams to be doing just fine. If there are iron sights on your rifle, make sure you measure the amount of space on your rifle for mounts, and the amount of space for a scope. Last thing you want is to have a scope that wont fit on your rifle. Get the dimensions of the scope you intend to buy and look into it before purchasing.

    Good luck,
    Safe shooting.

cheers Ez, didn't expect it to be that easy.

so they have no reason what so ever for taking it off her at the airports?

They are optics. Irrespective of what item they attach to there is no legal requiremtn for an authorisation, license, etc to have one. I mean a person with no gun or firearms license can buy a scope.

For all intensive purposes its a telescope.

Worth noting though that a riflescope of greater than 4x magnification exported from the UK should have an export license.

No issues from your end importing it though, its up to the seller to ensure the correct export procedures are follwed.

That's something I never knew. Still, it's pretty unusual to be buying optics to take out of the UK - I though you guys had this long-term deal going with a specialist optics store on mainland Europe?

Its been the case for quite a while, classed as dual use. In other words could have a possible military use.

There would be a fair few scopes leaving the UK though, the rest of Europe being the biggest market.

Well, it takes a lot to amaze me, but you've done it. The UK has to be the most expensive place to buy ANY scope I've ever heard of. Or just about anything else for that matter.

It just cost me almost eu125 to fill up my car. :=(

My first car, a 1966 Buick, cost me less than that.
