Looking forward to Dingle tomorrow, good to hear you moved to the Full. See you later.

Best of luck in Dingle - have a ball. It sounds like some gig; absolutely raging it didn't fit in with the Berlin training plan. Be good - that pacing crew are wild...;):D

Plan will be to burn the group off by half way and then go hunting you down solo!:p

I'm not too familiar with that last hill but I'm sure I'll be reliving the experience over several pints in Dicky Mac's or Foxy John's (Yes, a real pub name!!) afterwards!!
    It should be good!

Nice one. That means we'll be pacing the same people until you guys branch off at approx 11.5 miles.
Leg it back out onto our course afterwards and catch up to us!:p
Of course if you are feeling extra energetic Aimman is bringing round the 4:15 gang!:D

    See ya down there.

Depending on how much doubling back I have to do, I could be a long way behind you by the time I get back to marathon route. I'll do my best to hunt you down catchup up with you guys, but I might need to hold a bit back for the hill!

Best of the luck with the pacing run Belcarra, that's an impressive thing to take on to do.

    Thursday & Friday, 30th & 31st August - Rest Days.
Took these two days off in order to make sure the legs were fresh for Saturday. It seems to have worked...

    Saturday, 1st September - 42.3km Dingle Marathon - Pacing 4:30 group.
This was my first pacing gig ever and it was supposed to be just the Half Marathon until I got a phonecall from RunningCoach mid week to see if I could manage the Full instead. The pace would stay the same but the doubling of the distance was going to be the challenge seeing as I had gone no further than 25km since Cork three months ago. I mentioned this to RC but he encouraged me to give it a go and was confident I'd manage it. With the distance caveat out of the way I was happy to give it a lash!
Up at 7am for a spot of brekkie (Bowl of Kelkin's 'Berries Granola' and a banana) followed by our pre race brief and the handing out of the pacer tops, we were en route to the start line by 8:30 or so. There was a bit of a job trying to get the balloons freed up and it was at this point that I realised there was no 4:30 balloons! Luckily there was one spare balloon left in the car and I grabbed this even though there was no time marked on it.

After making our way to the start line I met a friend who was running the HM at my pace so we chatted for a few mins before the race started. At this stage I decided to allow my balloon to float overhead as I had been holding it at waist height til now. Of course, as soon as I did the balloon went skywards and I was left holding the twine! Not the most auspicious of starts to my pacing career but I felt somewhat blameless as it was obviously the organisers knot that failed and not mine. At least that’s what I kept telling everyone around me that were breaking their arses laughing!

After a couple of mins we got to cross the start line and we were off. The first couple of miles passed quickly but it was a real struggle to slow down to the correct pace. Along the way I was forced to watch out for the blue numbers signifying those doing the full course. Anyone I notcied I told them that I was doing the 4:30 pace if they were interested but only 1 or 2 joined for the first half. I expect most of them either aimed for a faster time or simply wanted to just finish.

Around miles 5-7 we were climbing away from Ventry and into a strong wind. At this stage I was thinking of the Ultra guys and how tough the course would be for them. As we rounded the bottom of Eagle Mountain we changed direction enough to have the wind on our backs. It stayed like this for most of the remainder of the race which would prove useful later. I was joined by a few people around here so there was a bit of banter to keep any hint of boredom at bay. This was an aspect of marathons that I hadn’t enjoyed for my last few races as I’ve always been looking for a time recently and hence not much talking goes on.
I ended up banking a little more time than scheduled for the first 13.1 miles until the HM’ers finished their race. The road immediately became much quieter. There was a fair old drag out of Dunquin and quite a few people were beginning to walk around here. I thought to myself it would be a long day for them.

Because everybody remaining were official full marathon racers I made sure to speak to everyone as I passed. Most decided to run with me for a while although this never lasted more than a few miles as they would drop off the pace again. At approx mile 17 TheBoyWonder went past. He’d completed his 2:15 pacing duties and was now doing the second half of the course as an MP LSR. Fair going and by mile 21 he had made up the 10-12mins difference on Aimman with the 4:15 group. This coincided with a 2km out and back section which I found useful as it gave a picture of the state everyone else was in just ahead of me. There were a few heads that I picked out which I knew I’d be seeing later.

At the end of this stretch came the dreaded ‘big-hill-near-the-finish’! (The organisers will have to give it a moniker to rival Connemarathon’s ‘Hell of the West’!) Once again my temporary comrades fell away and indeed the vast majority of people were now walking the hill. Somewhere around here Keith Whyte went past as the Ultra leader. Judging his pace I shouted after him a few words of encouragement but he looked remarkably comfortable 45 miles into his race on this tough hill. Impressive stuff! I caught up to an old guy towards the top and he seemed mightily relieved when I pointed the top being literally around the next corner. Fair play to him though he was one of the few still running the hill.

As I started my descent it was a good chance of running company again as people started running once more. I dragged a few people along this section for a couple of miles so managed to save them at least 5mins in most cases. One guy ran with me for 10 mins before dropping off but managed to make it back to my mini group a second time. Then the remainder of the group fell away until it was just myself and him. We ran the remaining 15 mins to the finish line and as we neared the line I let him go on ahead for the finishing glory. I crossed the line on target pace time (4:29:11) a couple of secs later (Receiving a cheer from my fellow pacers Ger, Stephen and Rita) feeling like I’d just done an easy 10 miler. I was amazed at how well I felt and could well have gone another 10 miles at least. Of course this immediately put the Ultra into my head for next time but I guess we’ll park that one for the time being! A great day out and a couple of satisfying pints in Dingle that afternoon before having to leave town. Next time I’ll definitely hang about for the pints with the other pacers and I’d recommend the experience for anyone half thinking about it in the future - both the race and the pacing!

Sunday, 2nd September – Rest Day.
Mad dash to Dublin on Sun morning to get to the Mayo match – What a game!!

What a weekend on the back of the marathon and Arsenal beating Liverpool 2-0 to boot! Went for more pints after the match and was never gonna be running today!

    Monday, 3rd September – 6.5km Recovery Run.
Ran to Cabra to collect my car. Everything was perfect apart from some tender quads but nothing that won’t be fixed by mid week!

Not a bad week last week considering I managed 83km off just three runs.

Tuesday, 4th September - Rest Day.
Legs (quads) still felt a bit tender so took this as a rest day.

    Wednesday, 5th September - 16.7km - LT session 10km at 4:30
Legs felt much better today so I stopped off to the Park on my way home. It was a lovely evening for a run. I had an LT run down for tomorrow but decided to move it forward to today instead. 2.7km easy before I started into the tough kms. Plan outlined 16km total with 10km @ LT which I was taking as 4:30. The first few kms were mentally tough as I was unsure if I'd manage the ten of them but the more that got completed the more I knew I'd get to the finish. One miscalculation towards the end meant that what I thought was 2.5km to go was actually 3.5km! No worries I was actually still feeling good so ploughed on to the end.

Half way around I realised I would be doing a sub 45min 10km in training just 4 days after completing a marathon! My last training log was specifically aimed at getting a sub 45min 10km and by this time last year I still hadn't achieved that! So that was a nice bonus for this evening!:D

Very impressive to go out and do a LT like that after the marathon in Dingle and the match on Sunday.

    Any tickets?

Working on it but I'll be lucky to get just the one!
Did you enjoy it on Sunday? Some match!

    Thursday, 6th September – 9.0km Recovery Run
Went for a recovery run after a tough LT session last night but the legs still seemed a bit tired.

    Friday, 7th September – 20.0km MLR Run
Thought it would be a good idea to get an MLR thrown in before the Irish match this evening. Went to the Park and did a couple of big laps. I was kinda suffering a little towards the end and I reckoned it was a combination of the muggy evening and the LT run two days previous. Ended up finishing at 20km and opted against going for 25km as I had been thinking about.

    Saturday, 8th September – 26.0km LSR Run
Met up with VaderMLK and Basster in the park for a LSR. Plan was formulated just before we started and the general agreement was to do ‘29km with 19@MP’. Nobody said we should take off at MP immediately but that is kinda what we did - We were still fresh enough for a good chat going round though. After being refused entry to Famleigh we diverted for the War Memorial gardens before eventually returning to the cars for a water break at the end of 19.5km where the av pace was spot on 5:00/km. Should have been a few secs quicker but given it was over 19km and a hot day so I wasn’t going to complain with that!

After our splash n dash we headed away again for a planned further 10km at easier pace. However, after the break my legs were not like lead so I bailed after 27km. Yesterday’s run was still in my legs (First back 2 back longish runs since Spring) and no doubt there must still be some residual effect from running Dingle last week. I’m pretty happy with where I am at the moment and with 3 good solid weeks behind me at this stage I’m hoping another 7 weeks of similar (Before my 3 week taper) might have me looking at 3:20 rather than 3:30 in Valencia. Aim high and hopefully I will get the 3:30 at least!

    Sunday 9th & Monday 10th September – Rest Days
Took Sunday off as a rest day as I was feeling a bit knackered, no doubt in some part because of the past 2 day’s runs but mainly to a skipfull of drink the night before!

Then on Monday I was still knackered but also had a bit of a sore throat so decided a second rest day might be the sensible choice.

    Tuesday, 11th September – 17.2km MLR Run
Went to the Park for a medium run. Meant to get about 24km but ran out of light by 17km. The evenings are getting really short now and this one in particular was pretty cold too.

    Wednesday, 12th September – 10.0km Recovery Run
Back in the Park again last night for a Recovery 10km. The body was feeling a little achy with the knees particularly so. This all leads to running slower than it feels but was ok this time given it was a recovery run. Hopefully this evening after work I'll be feeling fresher as its a 30km LSR on the schedule...

    Thursday, 13th September – 32.0km LSR Run
In the Park for the third evening in a row. Managed 32km which went pretty well and could have done a few more at the end if it wasn't pitch dark by the end. No more LSRs on weekday evenings for me:rolleyes:
Body felt well recovered from aches and niggles.

Friday, 14th September – Rest Day
At a wedding in Cork so no chance to do any mileage.

    Saturday, 15th September – 10.0km Recovery Run
Managed to get out for an easy 10k around the Marina and old Cork to Passage railway line which forms a significant part of the Cork marathon. First km was a bit ropey but setteld into a rhythm soon after. The final few kms left me feeling a bit jaded but most of that is down to the day of drinkng beforehand!

    Sunday 16th & Monday 17th September – Rest Days
Absolutely knackered when I returned from Cork so just lounged on the couch all day. Then Monday was busy in the early evening and by the time 8:30pm came along I figured it was a bit cold out so gave into mental weakness and stayed in!

    Tuesday, 18th September –24.0km MLR Run with 5 x 800m VO2 Max session
Feeling guilty from only 10km in four days I decided to lump Monday’s planned run (13km easy) in with tonights session (13km with 5 x 800m VO2 Max). I ran a MP-paced 10km before heading for Furze Rd and starting into the intervals so that I was already running on far-from-fresh legs. The first 3 intervals were @ 3:51 pace or thereabouts but the 4th one was tougher and was at 3:59 pace. I managed to focus the mind though and threw in a 3:51 pace again at the end but I was pretty much flat out which is too big an effort for VO2 and can feel it a little bit in my calves today as a result.

After the intervals I threw in another 8.5km to bring up the days total to 24km, 2 less than the planned 26km but my back was beginning to feel a little stiff so decided I was close enough.

    Thursday, 20th September - 23.0km Recovery Run
Back in the park for a MLR. Legs were much improved on yesterday thankfully. I was wary of going too fast as the av pace was hovering around 5:15/km but the HR was staying in the early to mid 130's which is in the recovery zone. A little bit of 'cardiac drift' (and a spike of 170's at the start that lasted for 5 mins) and by the end the av HR was 142bpm, which conveniently happens to be bang on the target HR for LSRs.
Surprised that it equated to 5:13/km pace as I had guesstimated it should be 5:30 pace. I guess the training is paying off.:)

    Friday, 21st September - 8.2km Time Trial
Tried something out this evening which I have been meaning to do for a couple of weeks now. In a bid to equate paces vs training HR zones I ran the following:
    km1: Warm up
    km2: 138bpm (GA HR) @ 4:52/km
    km3: 143bpm (Easy HR) @ 4:42/km
    km4: 153bpm (MP HR) @ 4:21/km
    km5: 158bpm (LT HR) @ 4:13/km
    km6(600m): 159bpm* (VO2max HR) @ 3:49/km
    2km cool down.

I ran this by keeping to the HR target rather than expected pace.
So, nearly all paces (Apart from VO2max) appear way too fast for reality. I think I may be better served trying this out after a 10km warm up first and then upping the splits by 2km at a time. It may not be a perfect result then but it should be closer to expected results than this evening.

*I took a 400m breather before the VO2Max so that is the main reason as to why the HR is 159 as opposed to closer to the expected 170bpm.

Have to have something to think about on all those lsr's just to keep the boredom away!

    Saturday, 22nd September - 32.1km LSR

Met up with beeduybe at 9 for a jaunt around the park. I'd been kinda dreading this run for the past few days as it was aimed at getting me out of my comfort zone by doing MP @ 4:40 pace just to see how I was set.

We took the first 11.6 km @ 5:22 pace just to ease us into the session. This felt fine and what I would call an 'easy effort' pace which tied in nicely with an av HR of 141bpm, pretty much what P&D would recommend.

After returning to the cars for a dash of water we headed out again for the tough part! The first 12km were done at an av of 4:40/km, right on target but the pair of us began to start suffering a little here. At this point we ran into Basster and managed to persuade him to continue for a few miles with us (He was on a slow LSR). This fresh impetus managed to keep us going at around 4:50 av pace for the next 5km until we got back to the cars for another drink (I was parched!).

We were fully intended on finishing off the 5km @ MP remaining but when we went back out all we were able for was a plod at about 5:20 pace. Towards the end I was suffering so took a walk break of about 5 mins before jogging the rest of the way back to the cars.

All in all a really good session. I figured out that I'm certainly nowhere near 4:40 pace at the moment but it also gave me confidence about sub 3:30hrs in Valencia. A few LT sessions over the next few weeks and hopefully I'll get a little quicker yet.
Plus, taking advantage of Marthastew's injuies/lack of updating the 1,000mile table I have at last repassed her after taking June off!:D

97.4km from the past 5 days running so a good week behind me and I can head to Croker guilt free when using tomorrow as a rest day...just need to get my hands on a ticket this evening though!!
    H'up Mayo!!!

Just so we're both clear on this.... The only reason you've managed to overtake me (a female runner who is waaaaay older than you:)) on the 1,000 mile challenge is because I'm injured;)

Good luck getting your hands on a ticket for tomorrow. Mr Stew's sister is married to a fine Mayo man, they've been proudly sporting those car window flags for the past month, they live in Dalkey and one of their neighbour's recently pointed to the flags and asked "What's your connection with Portugal?":D

Thanks for breaking up the LSR on Saturday, nice to do a few quicker miles to wake the legs up. Commiserations on the result, Horan's doing a good job there and ye'll be back.

Sunday, 23rd September & Monday, 24th September – Rest Days
Had no chance to get out on Sunday with the match and associated pub session and Monday was too wrecked still to go out in that horrible weather!

    Tuesday, 25th September – 12.2km Easy Run
Managed to coax myself into hitting the road this evening. First run in darkness for 6 months. Realised how many street lights are not working – a result of council’s budget difficulties? Makes life trickier for running anyways :(.
Took it handy enough this evening with an Av HR of 133bpm giving me a pace of 5:13/km over 12.2km. Happy with that as it looks like 3h30m pace should be well within my possibilities for Valencia. Due an LT session this evening to try and push for 3h20m possibilities…

    Wednesday, 26th September - 8.2km Fartlek Run
    Thursday, 27th September - 15.0km - LT session 12.3km at 4:30
Went out on Wednesday evening in the Park after work for an LT session. Plan was a 5km warm-up with 11km @ LT before another couple of km warm down. However, I ended up running the warm-up at just over 5:00 pace which felt fairly comfortable but when it came to the LT portion I was too concerned with getting the HR into the correct 156bpm range that the first km was ran way too quick. Then the centre of my left quad was beginning to hurt a little. Then I discovered my watch memory was full so the data may or may not be captured correctly. At this stage I reasoned it was probably best to scrap this session and start afresh on thurs night. I continued on back to the car for what was now a fartlek session and drove home disappointed.

Thursday night and I was determined to win back the LT session. I ran this one in the local park in Santry where each lap is 1 mile. I made sure to take the warm-up much handier at what felt like about 5:20 pace. The w/u distance was only 2km as well which would allow for a greater chance of completing the session. First lap of the park and I discovered the pathway at the highest point is flooded! (Those park rangers really do nothing to earn their money!!) I started off at a much slower rate of progression to the LT pace than yesterday and sure enough the first km had an av HR of 147. After completing the lap I decided to alter my remaining laps to avoid the floods and this offered a 2.2km loop instead. I kept monitoring the watch and by now the HR was sitting on 155/156. It continued like this til I had 2km left to run where a random French lad asked to join my run. He was full of beans as I was struggling to hold a conversation. After asking about his pedigree he told me he was a sub 32min 10k and that 1,500m was his distance. No wonder he was comfortable at this pace! My pace increased a bit while we ran together and I was happy to go my own way 2km later when I finished my LT session and he returned to the park! A very slow 800m warm down and it was all over.

So, instead of struggling to the 11km I ended up with 12.3km @ LT (157bpm, 4:30/km) which I was very happy with. There were no issues with my left quad and everything felt good. My target time of sub 1:50 for the 15 miler on Sunday may be just a little outside of my range (4:33/km pace required) but I'll still go for it regardless.

    Friday, 28th September - 16.6km Easy Run
Easy run this afternoon. Half way around I began to get tired which I'm assuming was a result of the session yesterday and the abandoned session the day before. A relaxed 10km in the morning and then the 15 miler eco2run race on Sunday morning to come.

    Saturday, 29th September - 9.5km Easy Run
Easy recovery run around the usual loop. Body just seemed a bit jaded.

    Sunday, 30th September - 18km inc 10miler Eco2Run Race.
Originally planned to do the 15 miler in this series of races and indeed started with that intention. Only 52 doing this race and within the first 200m it was obvious most of the faster runners were in alternative races. By 300m I was in 8th position and by the end of the first km I was in 6th but it had taken a 4:14km to get there. This felt pretty easy running but I knew i had to slow down. From there on I tried to remain within the 155-160bpm range (LT) and this rarely failed me. After about 7km I went past the 5th place guy and managed to open a good 100m between us over the next 2km. The rest of the first lap went without any major events and I was about 36:35 as I passed the finish line.
VaderMLK passed me (he was doing the 20miler) around the 11km mark and we had a quick chat before he thundered off again! Halfway around the 2nd lap the boredom of the course and the multitude of faster 5, 10 and a few remaining 20 milers going past me made it all feel a real drag. The wind certainly didn't help either as the nature of the course meant you were head-on into a strong wind every few hundred metres. With about 1k left on lap two I began to crumble mentally and thoughts of stepping off the course with a good LT session completed were becoming more attractive. Physically I wasn't too bad but the HR was hovering around the upper echelons of LT and the pace had begun to fall into the mid 4:40's. I reckoned that the final lap would have consisted of me plodding around at 5:00 kms and that wasn't going to offer a huge amount to my training. I felt annoyed with myself for going out a bit too fast in the first few kms but ultimately it was the mental weakness and the fact I could just take a 10mile time that settled the decision for me.

Ended up with a 3min PB for 10 miles but if I had decided before the race to go for that I would surely have taken another minute or two off it, even in the windy conditions.

At least this has focused the mind for next week in Athlone where I have decided to do the first 1/4 marathon in 4:55 pace and then try and up the pace to 4:45's for the remainder and see how that goes! The course is fairly undulating though so keeping a steady pace (whatever it is!) may prove difficult!

Just noticed September was my second biggest training month of the year (& ever!):)

You must have started just as I finished up. Looking at winning times I'm raging I started the 20. All other races were winnable, especially since I'm comparing the time I ran while pacing for 20 miles to other times. Doh.

Hear you on the boredom of the course. Shorter laps in Donadea and 10 of them wasn't a bother. All about the surroundings.

I think I started just before you finished your first lap. I saw you half way out on the course but failed to see you on my second lap and figured you might have finished up early alright. I was a bit annoyed afterwards that I didn't continue just to get the 5th place finish (might even have got 4th if anyone blew up on the last lap).

    You doing Athlone this weekend?
