Naas mayor refuses to represent black Africans

    Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 10:37 AM

The Mayor of Naas in Co Kildare has said he will no longer represent those of African origin in the town.

Councillor Darren Scully has stressed that this is his own view, and not that of Naas County Council.

He said he made the decision based on what he described as the "aggressive" attitude he experienced when representations were made to him by black Africans.

Speaking to KFM, Darren Scully said he would refer any black African seeking assistance from him to another of his council colleagues.

"I have been met with aggressiveness and bad manners," he said. "I have also been met with the race card, (with people saying) 'Oh yeah, you will help white people, but you don't help black people'.

"So after a while I made a decision that I was just not going to take on representations from black Africans, that I would be very courteous to them and I would pass on their query to other public representatives."

Wow! I never thought we'd hear a public figure come out with something so clearly racist, especially one from a major party.

Surely he's had lots of rudeness from white people too - he's a politician!

And he has a responsibility to represent all of the people of Naas.

    What a goon!

I thought this was just an inflammatory headline. Guy should be kicked out.

He could just have said that he wasn't going to deal with people who had an aggressive attitude.

He should probably just have resigned if he wasn't willing to represent his constituents.

Shops aren't allowed discriminate on race, I'm not sure why an elected representative should be able to.

I wonder why he had to announce it to the world, instead of quietly having people re-directed in the background? Perhaps he likes trouble.

Even in the unlikely case every black African he's dealt with has been aggressive (and frankly, I don't blame people for being rude to him) he can't simply decide that ALL black Africans are like that.

If he had twenty white people be rude to him (and he probably has), I'm sure he wouldn't refuse to deal with all white people.

Also, what's his stance on black Irish people, as most of the children of black Africans in his constituency would be?

Not to come across as contraversial but there is an elephant in the room.

The africans that come here due to poor education and enviourment may lack intelligence and anger is associated with low intelligence.

I'm not saying black people are stupid far from it and its not about race. It's about people coming here from poor backrounds and violant enviourments and these people just so happen to be African.

The mayor may have a point.

    +1.

It's insane that someone can be branded RACIST! for being rational and stating facts.

He's being branded a racist as he is being racist by discriminating against an entire ethnicity based on the apparent behaviour of some members of that ethnicity.

He's basically saying that all black Africans are rude and aggressive, by refusing to deal with any black African people, and that's textbook racism.

I agree with this man 100% and he gave his reasons which are in no way racist. More people should stand up to this type of agressiveness. Teachers, nurses, publicans, shopkeepers, doctors have all got their reasons for not dealing with this type of behaviour and fair play to them. Bravo Sir, well done and you have plenty of support.

He handled it badly to say the least. And to make the remark "Black Africans" is a sweeping generalisation. There are Africans from many different African nations here and many of them are quite sound and fun to be around not too mention hard working.

Maybe he was referring to some quarters of the Nigerian community who can be very difficult to deal with as yes they can be very aggressive with 0 manners? This is something that I have experienced over the years here too. I've also noticed other Africans having problems dealing with them too. Ask 90% of our taxi drivers what they think of Nigerian men? Or indeed Womens Aid? Majority of Nigerian men here are aggressive! We have our own rude aggressive folk too. The Celtic Tiger exposed that in the worst way!

He's an elected official and should be able to deal with aggression in a more mature manner.

First, he's a politician, so he has to expect some of that.

Second, if he feels a certain section of the community he represents are more aggressive than other sections, why doesn't he try to reach out to them, talk with them, figure out why they might be aggressive and deal with that.

You know, actually serve the people he's paid to serve.

But instead of actually dealing with the "issue," he goes to the media looking for attention.

Dealing with behaviour is one thing. Assigning that behaviour to all people of a race is well, racism.

So another politician refuses to serve a bunch of the electorate, surprise surprise. He should refuse anyone who is aggressive, doesn't matter what their colour. I had a bit of this crap in England back in the late 80's, a couple of people refused to help me because of the fact I was Irish and "we are bombing London".

I've dealt with plenty of Africans, some are the gentlest people you could meet, some are fine, some are total cnuts but I dont generalise with all of them. Scully is paid by the taxpayer to do a job, he should do it or GTFO.

Either way FG need to act quick on this and set an example by ejecting him from the party.

ah awul after hours being ruined by the high horse brigade again.

The man obviously thought about his comments before he made them and i'm sure he ran it by someone.

Also we dont know what actually happened

I think people should concentrate that we're gonna be raped again on the 6th with the budget unfortunately

He's a racist pure and simple and should be sacked from his job. I'm not sure what kind of contract local politicians have but if the clerk on the front desk Naas council offices said "I'm not dealing with any Africans" he'd be sacked. Why should the Mayor be any different?

I hate the racism card, but what this guy is doing is racist, pure and simple. Stereopyping people negatively purely on skin colour.
Last time I was in hospital in Ireland the 2 doctors that saw me were black africans. I hope they don't live in Naas.

This guy is either a racist, a complete jerkoff or an idiot or all three. As a public representative, he has a duty to represent all of the electorate and if he doesn't want to do so, he should resign his excessively well-paid sinecure.

Sweeping generalisations and racial stereotyping of the kind that he has demonstrated only encourage and legitimise the attitudes and actions of scumbags who indulge in the casual racism that is all too common in Ireland.

The Finn Gael leadership, especially Enda Kenny, who certainly does not share such despicable views, should make it abundantly clear that it dissociates itself from the views of this rather nasty little man and will not endorse him at the next election.

If creeps like him are not pulled up sharpish when he says such a despicable thing, what will he think of next? Perhaps a big sign on the motorway announcing that "Naas ist jetzt judenrein"?:)

Christ almighty. Someone should tell him that its normal practise for the denizens of many African countries to shout at the top of their voices, wave their hands and generally throw shapes when they are discussing something. Admittedly that sort of behaviour in Ireland's culture usually comes about half a minute before someone gets a shlap, but still, meet in the middle like.

Women in general can be as aggressive and threatening in meetings as men, it doesn't matter where they come from. Same goes for people of different nations, no there are aggressive and quiet people from all nations.

Its been said before, he should just tell someone who is becoming aggressive to leave the office/meeting and inform one and all that that is the way aggressive people will be dealt with from now on.

Either way he is a public representative, and he is there to rpresent all, if he is incapable of doing this then he should resign, we already waste enough money on politicians who dont do their jobs.

This is idiotic. Of course he's being racist!

Why the hell didn't he just release a statement saying he wasn't going to represent rude, aggressive people??? I could get behind that.

Deciding that every black, african person who enters Naas, in the past, present or future is not worthy of his representation makes him a racist idiot.

Agree with the Mayor of Naas. Been self employed i stopped taking phone

calls from Nigerians. After a few customers i realised its not worth it,

They just don't get the privce is the price. having to put up with the

shouting, rudness and bad manners off most of them i've dealt with.

Found that the women were by far, more aggressive than the men. Scary race of people.

Maybe, being from another country, Africans are disguisted by the incompetence, uselessness, red tape, beauracy, and condecension of elected officials whereas Irish people have learnt to meekly accept it.

Maybe they are frustrated that coming from a third world country they expect higher standards and are met with backward, racist Gombeens like this in elected positions who when faced with people who are frustrated, instead of doing anything about it, tars them all with one brush, turns his back and refuses to deal with them. Publically.

Seep Blatter makes comments to the effect that comments said in the heat of the moment should be forgotten about after the game and gets rightly pillored from every direction.

An elected representative makes comments like this after careful reflection and people here are supporting him???

I am ashamed to be Irish reading this thread.
