Changing Guns?

I know someone who recently inherited two shotguns. He has no interest in shooting or hunting and he told me he will probably just sell them off to a gun dealer. I remember seeing one of these guns before and liking it. I want to buy it as an upgrade on a gun of my own. Can I firstly, buy it directly off him? And secondly, transfer my licence over to this new gun then sell off my gun to a dealer?

One other piece of info is that the guns he inherited are currently being kept at the local Garda Barracks as he has no licenses (nor doesn't intend on getting any) for either of them.

A bit long winded I know but I'm just not sure how to tackle this one!

You can pay him for them/it, but not from him as he is not in possession of them nor can he be as he does not hold a license for them.

Yes. Its a substitution you need to do. As to selling your gun to a dealer, without being nasty, good luck. They cannot sell at the moment, and i know of no dealers currently buying second hand guns for cash.

You may have to sell privately or through a dealer.

Cheers for that. Sounds problematic enough! So do you just apply to the guards for a substitution licence and then once it comes through you then sell off the old one?

If you do a substitution then your old license is invalid. Meaning you cannot possess the gun you currently do. Further meaning you need to sell it before subbing the license or surrender it to a dealers to be sold for you.

IOW - You can only have in your possession the firearm that your license covers you for.
