Anyone else finding the 4S terrible?

Mine is dropping calls, terrible signal, signal disappearing. My other half's is worse with all of the above plus every text that come is it sounds like 2 texts (tone played over its self), call connect but neither party can hear anything, speaker randomly activating.

Even with the firmware fix the battery seems to be terrible.

I am having no issues with my 4S. Have you tried reinstalling iOS 5.0.1 by going through the restore procedure in iTunes. The problem you are have sounds like its most likely software based.

This happens to me occasionally... Also if I get a text and if i don't read it, within a few minutes the tone sounds again

    Only problems I'm having:
    • Cannot access EirTextPro app when on 3G (fine when using wifi)
    • Battery life is bad

Other than those issues, it's a marvel.

Just got of the phone to apple I'm sending mine back. After about 10 restores my battery is crap.

Yesterday I done my last restore before I made the call to apple. With only one app installed my usage shows as I text usage 12 hours 38 minutes, standby 21 hours and 24 minutes.
I'd say I used about 2 hours max and it's at 11%. Have everything off no apps installed no email no b/t no iCloud no feck all done all the tips and tricks you can think of still no joy.

Looks like the phone won't go on standby and something is running in the background all the time. When I gave the serial number to the chap on the phone he did not even ask did I do a restore or try anything else he just said we will take the phone back. So i will see what will happen.

im having a few issues with my new iphone 4s also. First one is only a small one but i cannot get the LED light to come on for calls. I have turned it off and on again but still no joy.

2nd one is i have no personal hotspot, i've contacted both my provider (emobile) and Apple about it and still cannot get it working. Its weird because i had the same issue with my iphone 4 but only after I jailbroke it.

I've tried to restore the phone many times. doing different things every time ie restore from back up, restore as a new phone.

also i am experiencing intermittent issues with my internet speed, sometimes it will work ok, other times it will work but very slow and the odd time not work at all. I know its not a coverage issue.

any help on any of these issues would be greatly appreciated

    Regards
    Dunny

I had the service dropping problem... Changed sim card - no effect. Went onto apple. Went through 2.5 hours of tests and in the end they sent me a replacement. This is working perfectly now. So it's a hardware issue. Friend of mine had the exact same outcome so it must be common as hell!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78 ✭✭zenit

I've had problems with the sim lock entry, it takes up to twenty minutes to open the phone. I have sim lock off now but seem to be losing coverage intermittently. While looking at phone in settings my phone number disappeared.

Those of you who got replacements, did you buy from Apple in the first place?

I have a 4S from Meteor and am having the same network issues. My sim pin is off which has helped reduce the frequency of the network drops, but it's still quite unusable outside of wifi. Meteor say I have to go through the sim swap procedure and then they send it off for repair. I'm wondering if I get on to Apple will I get a replacement quicker?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 77 ✭✭Donalh

Bought 4s 2 weeks ago and have the much publicised "poor battery performance" issue. Downloaded & installed the supposed fix (IOS update 5.0.1). Now battery is even worse, possibly as much as 50% worse. Now get approx 10-12 hours from full charge even with little or no usage.
Suggest anyone with issues leave feedback on Apple site (link provided), bit of people power needed here guys, if enough people complain, they will fix . http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

So far so good. Some call drops but more to do with location than the phone I reckon. Pity Siri doesn't know Ireland would love to 'play around with her'. Other than that great yoke altogether.

Go to apple. much easier. I just rang up and will have replacement on thursday latest. This is called the express return which carries a UPS charge of twenty something euro, but you can do the standard 7 to 10 day return with apple if you want.

Is there a support website that Apple have where I can read up about their iPhone exchange program?

You pay €29 and they send you the replacement phone via UPS.

How long it takes, I guess depends on stock. When I did this a couple of weeks ago, I called on Monday at around 3pm and the new phone was in my hand on Tuesday at midday. It comes fom the UK via Germany.

If you go ahead with the ERS they put a hold on your CC. It will be around €500 odd, depending on the size of your phone.

After you get your new phone you have 10 days to return the old one. With your new phone comes a booklet telling you how to return the old one.

New phone comes with a return bag with a label. You call UPS and they come and pick it up.

I called on Wednesday and the old phone was back at Apple 10am on Thursday. It goes back to the same place in the UK the new one came from.

If you don't return the old phone within 10 days they start charging you late fees. The first one is €200 and so on.

If you want to improve battery life on the 4S try killing background apps. I noticed a drop in standby time since the 5.0.1 upgrade. Most apps you run get 'backgrounded' when exiting and still can have threads running so killing them will improve battery life. To see running background apps double tap the Home button and the list appears at the bottom, then scroll left to see all those little running background apps.

To kill them press and hold an app and they will start to 'wobble' with a little red alert, just touch the alert to take it off the list. Similar process to deleting an app only this will stop it running in the background.

This is not entirely true. Only some functions will actually run in the background, so just because an app shows up in the multitask bar, it doesn't mean it is doing anything. Navigation, Music and some tasks where the app needs to finish something will run in the background. Most apps don't have any background processing. The only resources being used is whatever it takes to store the apps open state in memory.

Got 4s on Friday last. When I put a call on speakerphone the mic turns off and the person i am speaking with cant hear me....

Going back to store today....Freaked out!!

Other than that phone is all good...Siri is disappointing - its just the same as the old speak and command service on 3gs. the speed is the most notable improvement...lightening quick.

That's because you didn't activate Siri.

Nope....Siri is activated and works fine.....Voice memo app works fine...just the speakerphone mic cuts off for some reason....

You said Siri is the same as the speak function on te 3GS, which it definitely is not.

Well I spoke too soon about having zero problems. Last night I was using the phone one minute and set it down for a secon, picket it up again to see the time by pressing the home button. Nothing, black screen, pressed the sleep/awake button and the same.

I thought maybe the battery was dead set it to charge overnight. Just had a look now and the phone was still dead.

Decided to try a reboot by pressing the two buttons and the Apple logo came up and then the phone was back. If it does it again I guess I'll be contacting Apple.

Posted this on another thread. iPhone4S with Meteor....
Their customer care is woeful...really woeful. You cannot get through. The only way is via Twitter and the only reason you'll get a response is because it's public and they have to be seen to respond.

I got the 4S and there are big issues with this phone. Dropped connections to the network, even when showing 4 bars or more, calls can't get through or texts sent. It will drop, then start searching and hook up. Then after a while drop again. This is not a meteor issue though, it seems to be affecting users around the world. Yet another antenna/baseband issue. Some users have said that by changing to the 128k micro sim card, this fixes the issue. The Meteor guy in the store I talked to a few days ago was gormless and didn't have a clue what I was talking about. Started to BS me about the issue being the phone hooking up to 3G and dropping it and update the iOS etc....

Even with the iOS update the battery life is still disappointing, And that's with iCloud off, location services off, even mobile data off. But whats the point in having a smart phone like this if you have to turn everything off?

Watch out for suspicious looking text messages on your bill sent to a UK number and for which you will be charged. Apparently, this is a text message Apple sends silently to activate Facetime! Every time you mess around or do a reset this silent text is sent! Ridiculous.

Meteor and Apple have not been a great combo here at all!

A note pops up to tell you about the Facetime SMS's so shouldn't be that big a surprise.

Started the thread above yesterday having missed this larger one. (Merge?) My phone refuses to send texts, I called apple and got given the usual reset everything spiel. When I did that and tried to power the phone back on it now wont unlock the sim, its been sitting on my desk beside me now for the last 30 minutes essentially bricked as it tries to unlock.:mad::mad::mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78 ✭✭zenit

You can cancel the unlocking but this will just give you an iPod. Same thing was happening with me. Apple have changed the phone now. Once you do get it unlocked once make sure you turn it off Settings-Phone-Sim Lock.

Yeah just managed it there, curious to see if the texting issue still persists with the sim lock off. Will report back.

has anyone tried doing the OTA update to 5.0.1 to see if it solves the problems?

or would that be stating the obvious?

5.0.1 made no difference to my signal issues. Testing the network reset and full reset now. Not making a huge difference
    Next step, new phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78 ✭✭zenit

Ya I tried that but it didn't work. Apple know there is a problem and are fast enough to exchange. New phone seems to be fine for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,579 ✭✭✭prettyboy81

No problems for me, have the 4S since Monday fully updated, battery seems same as my previous 4.

One thing I have noticed the back of the phone gets very hot, anyone else notice this?

The only problem i have is that when Im going to bed at night my battery is still on 60% from 8am that morning so Im wondering whether I should charge or not...tough decision :)
