He probably meant no USB port. There was one going in argos a couple of months ago for €50 that allowed you to play media files via USB, dunno if that is still available though.

It says USB on the front of the box? It must allow some function?

If you look closely at the front panel it says USB on the very right, no mention in the specs though.

Still no mention of USB in the spec, but the logo is clearly on the box.
    Maybe ask a question there?

Yeah, USB on back is for external recording ( USB drive or portable HDD ). Info in the User Manual here

Unless you live out in the sticks, or can't afford even standard UPC channels why would you bother with a saorview box?

If you want channels in a spare room sure you'd just run a splitter box.. I just don't get it.. The extra HD channels then more than likely you have a HD TV and could afford the extra channels anyway.. Boggles the mind

Because its subscription free TV. I have it along with freesat HD.

All the major channels for nothing but the licence fee.

It boggles the mind that people pay a fortune to watch re-runs of Top Gear on Dave.

the standard channels are available for free on saorview and freesat.

the only reason to get upc or sky is for the sports channels.

it boggles the mind why people are paying upc for channels that are available for free

I dont know. There is something strange happening with the service latly .

I dont need a saorview box as my TV can show digital content, but the EPG is saying Rescan Required on a few stations lately.

All the BBC's , ITV's, CH4, More4, Film Four's etc are broadcast free to air. All Irish terrestrial channels are also shown FTA.

There are many folks who run a Saorview / Freesat system side by side, both with 7-day EPG's, series link, PVR functionality etc.

As has previously been said, unless you require certain sports coverage or have a fetish for crapola like Duck Dynasty or Storage Wars, paying a monthly subscription makes little sense for many.

really ? i cant find that, can you post a link to that offer ?

i see upc have broadband available for 37 per month.

the cheapest broadband and tv bundle that i can find is an introductory offer of 50 a month for 6 months then after that the price goes up

UPC's internet and TV come in through the same coax cable. I've lived in two separate places were we only paid for internet and still had the basic stations coming in through the coax. I don't think it's something they use as a selling point, perhaps because it would damage their subscription TV sales.

Reality TV pap ruined all them stations for me. That and the absolute bollocks they show. Ancient Aliens on Discovery Science and ****in' factual documentaries about mermaids on the history channel.

Storage Wars and Duck Dynasty are on ITV4, I've got Freeview and Saorview, got to the pub for the odd match I'd want to see. Pay the bit extra and get a combi box.

I enquired about this with UPC and they charge extra for just broadband package for this very reason.

    Electronic Programme Guide.

Pros & cons tbh & it does depend on your set up at home and viewing habits - combi's deliver all channels via the one system, without need to switch between HDMI inputs - understandably appealing to many.

But you then lose the 7-day EPG on the Sat side & have to perform re-scans every time UK channels change transponder etc. The Freesat branded boxes require less faffing about in that respect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,257 ✭✭✭loopymum

Any recommendations for a combi box?

I don't mind paying sky 13.50 per month over the Christmas for the record function, it's mind blowingly easy. I do have an old PVR on that tv but the TV is old and doesn't have saorview built in.

We do have a combi Sat TV with Saorview in another room but the EPG is terrible and we have to switch inputs as such to watch the free sat channels. Bit of a pain that they are not all on the one EPG, for some reason I though it would record as well when I bought but it doesn't.

There are hundreds of channels available on Free To Air Satellite, see here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free-to-air_channels_at_28%C2%B0E

95% of all TV watched in the UK and Ireland are on these channels.

Many people run a separate Freesat and Saorview box to get all the main UK and Irish channels for free. Other people run a combi box which combines all the FTA Sat and Saorview channels into one box, with an EPG and ability to record.
    Etnies wrote: »

    - First of all, not officially, you are breaking the law by doing this.

    - Second, UPC is only available to about 1/3 of homes in Ireland, what about all the other people?

    - Third, even where UPC is available, this only works in certain areas, for instance it doesn't work in Cork UPC areas, where all channels are encrypted.

    - Fourth, these are analogue channels, they are in SD only and even at that have terrible picture quality.

On Saorview RTE 1 & 2 are in HD and even the other SD channels look WAY better then UPC analogue and it is just a matter of time before they go HD too.

Add FTA Sat to that and you also get BBC 1 & 2, C4, ITV, UTV all in HD and more coming all the time.

    - Fifth, while UPC haven't announced anything yet, it is only a matter of time before UPC turn off these analogue channels. It allows people to steal UPC's service, while they take up massive amounts of space on UPC's network which could be better spent on more HD channels and more bandwidth for high speed broadband.

I will agree with you that the one thing surprisingly missing from the free to air channels are some good documentary channels! It is the one thing I miss from when I cancelled Sky and went FTA.

Having said that, Discovery and History have gone way down hill, with rubbish like worlds deadliest catch and storage wars!!

The best docs are actually on BBC and C4 for free. However I would like if they created a dedicated FTA docs channel to show these docs on repeat, plus older excellent docs like World At War, etc.

I'm surprised someone (like Dave, the BBC's commercial arm) hasn't filled this niche.

so I think around 27 Eur

Got the last one in Donegal Town, reduced to €27, new sealed box so they're not returns.
Record function via USB Flash Drive or Hard Disc Drive which suits me as I've a few lying about.

35 quid a month to watch telly with ads on top of that.

I just use Netflix + Freesat.

Netflix doesn't have ads and is on demand.

Freesat has no monthly subscription fee.

There isn't an all in one solution to watching / recording UK and Irish TV using an EPG on one box for all channels unless you pay a monthly contract that cost's hundreds per year to SKY or UPC

You could invest in a linux box that costs a few hundred or dig up one of the no-longer produced freeview boxes that had teressterial tuner (hen's teeth), or add both a satellite and terresterial card to a PC. And don't forget the costs of electricity for a PC. But other than that all satellite/TV combos either get the UK EPG or the Irish one so it's pick your poison time.

One solution that's easy to manage is perhaps a Freeview box that can series link and record all the UK stuff and a saorview box that can record the Irish channels. For the price of having to remember to use two different remotes you can save hundreds per year.

Don't forget that you can get a USB dongle for about €8 if you want to watch TV via a computer. Another option is to use a FREE EPG on your computer http://tvbrowser.org/

Rabbit's ears are designed for VHF.

Saorview is on UHF so you'd be much better off looking for a small Yagi ;)

it's a plastic bar with metal rods that get shorter towards the front if that makes any sense

Like the Saorview box it's (ideally) line of sight aerial based reception, depending on your location the antenna supplied may not be sufficient. If by FTA you're including BBC, UTV CH4 etc - then no, it's purely Irish DTT broadcast (DVB-T MPEG-4).
