Have you met any rockstars that were actually cool?

Apparently a lot of rock stars are assholes, was wondering are there any cool rockstars that don't act like self important asshats? For example Devin Townsend is meant to be cool.

I think in the Rock/Metal scene the arseholes are definitely in the minority.

I've met so many but can't remember one nobhead, Dave Mustaine was a bit of a gobshite but i didn't technically meet him, he used a bad trick to avoid meeting us.

Bad trick? Or dare I ask?

Just him being a nob, think it was around '88, outside Manchester Apollo after a gig, round the side by the backstage door, next to the Pub. About 30 odd fans were waiting, and the rest of the band signed anything/everything.

Then a roadie came out, asked who wanted some pics, threw them in the air away from the tourbus, people go to get them and Mustaine just runs onto the bus and refused to come out. Gobshite

Met all of Metallica, all sound. Also met Faith No More, very cool, particularly Big Jim Martin. Met Aerosmith and in general sound except for Joe Perry who was a ponce and pouted like he was the big rock star and doing record signings was beneath him. Steven Tyler was brilliant, would've chatted all day except their handlers were trying to keep things moving.

Pete Steele was an absolute gent outside the SFX back around '96 or '97, can't imagine him being any different 'til the day he died.

at least he didn't use a bad trick to avoid kissing the blarney stone, like my bud. Went all that way to anyhow sure why not btw how many of you?? They will often shirk the throngs u gotta get in with em by yourself via drugs or good restaurant suggestion.. though slayer just wanted the nearest BK. Paradise Lost wanted the best italian vino to sink their plastic fangs into

Also if mustaine sometimes seems egotistical well he is a virtuoso in the field of thrash .. so it may be a byproduct. Motley you make famous people look even shorter

I've met Rise Against, and they were all fantastically nice. Likewise for George Fisher from Cannibal Corpse.

I met Robert Plant in a rehearsal room in Birmingham around 1991-ish and he was cool. Also met and chatted to Lajon Witherspoon from Sevendust after a gig and he was excellent.

Met and drank with Phil Lynott and he was as cool as they as get and also a nice guy.

Met Lemmy who was sound, Lips from Anvil back in the 80s, who was also sound. Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi who were quite but not particularly rude.

Brian Robertson, who was a bit of a nob!

Chad Smith did a drum clinic up in BIMM music college today before the gig. He was supposedly really cool and nice and friendly. Signed an old concert ticket for my friend even though he was being rushed to his van, said hi and thanks to everyone that had waited outside for him.

On his Twitter he commented saying he'd a great time and tried to comment as Gaeilge. Bless him.

Met Alexisonfire several times and they are the nicest guys you could meet. Dallas can be a bit off at times but the rest of em are dead on. Went for a few drinks with them after a show in London a few years back, even got them to sing happy birthday for my gf who couldn't make it.

The Hives were way cooler than I expected too. Met them in a Guitar Center in New York and chatted with them for 20 mins. They were all asking about Ireland and stuff. One of the guitarists asked me to jam a song with him too. Got a cool photo with the singer too!

Martha from Bleeding Through is great too. Ended up watching the other bands with her at the Never Say Die tour in Newcastle last year. Sound out.

36 Crazyfists, Rise Against, Sepultura and Funeral for a Friend were all great aswell though they were just fleeting exchanges.

Nornagest (Enthoned) and Peter Tatgren (Hypocrisy) are quite decent to have a chat with, but above all, I would mention Eisregen

yeah lad, of course back then those were the days when fans were allowed to be close to the musicians, not like today were theres upteen security guards and barriers.

True, in the past at big festivals there were only 3 main areas of admittance.
Front of stage where the fans went, 1 Backstage area and The Stage (Artists only but only during or before there own set)

Nowadays ya got Backstage, VIP, Artistes Area, AAA and stage. So if yer feeling happy you have an elusive Backstage pass, the only thing it probably means is slightly better bogs and quicker to get a pint.

Met Gavin Harrison (drummer for Porcupine Tree and other bands) at his Drum Clinic earlier this year, gentleman is the only word for him. Got an autograph and a picture.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Was working at Arthurs Day this year and met the drummer from The Killers who was a really cool guy along with his band (which included the original bass player from Weezer :D )

Met Eddie Vedder & Mike McCready in Dublin, totally cool guys. Got a guitar pick from Eddie & a tooth pick from Mike :) Billy Corgan suprisingly nice, heard mixed stories about him, I was lucky enough to get into his soundcheck when he played solo here a few years ago, have to mention his touring keyboard player, Linda Strawberry, she was totally cool, really nice & not bad looking also :) Tom Araya from Slayer & Joey Belladonna from Anthrax, cool guys. Max Cavalera, sound bloke, Chad Smith from the chili peppers, a legend & a total gent.

I've been lucky enough to meet a good few of my favourites over the years, but the ones that stand out as geniunely nice folk are Kittie, Fear Factory, and Joey Bellodonna from Anthrax.

Have met a lot of bands over the last few years and the only people I found rude were Mike Patton from FNM and Kerry King from Slayer.

That said I know people who have met them over the years and say they've been lovely. Everyone's entitled to a bad day.

Well I met one of my idols (Vinnie Paul - Pantera) in an Irish bar while I was on honeymoon in new york.

Myself and the missus went on the piss with him and a couple of other lads from Hell Yeah and they were some of the soundest most down to earth people you would ever meet.

Myself and Vinnie were chosing Pantera songs on the Jukebox together.

How awesome is that. Best night ever..

Had a similar night in fibbers with gene hoglan from death/syl

Chad smith is indeed a gent, as is Devin Townsend, ditto fear factory (minus burton, didn't get to chat him much so have no opinion) Justin chancellor is nice, as is Adam jones (great story bout him, and how he went out of his way for a fan, for another day tho)

Taylor Hawkins passed me a joint. Mike mckeegan is nice, but wouldn't pose for a photo. Peter Steele was of course, a gent. Ditto all of slayer ( minus araya, he wasn't there, and it was bostaph, not Lombardo....shared a urinal with hanneman!)

Sikth.... All gents, even mikee, who's mental.
Hmmm I've met more than Id thought I had!

Met Richard Fortus, Thin Lizzy / G & R. Very nice lad, took the time to chat to my 14yr old son and later answer his email.
The Edge very friendly, no sh£t about him. Got a big autograph which the young fella is going to get framed.
Have a drum stick from a UFO gig at the stadium in the early 80s but that doesnt really count as I didnt meet Andy Parker the drummer.

Paul Gilbert was bang on sound. So were the guys from Amon Amarth. I got stuff signed from Anthrax a few years ago when Danny Spitz was briefly in the band. Himself and Joey Belladonna came across as the friendliest out of the lot while the rest kept their heads down.

You know what, there are "rock stars", musicians that are labelled to be so uncool and a lot of the time its the one's with the good reputations that can be so up their own áras's

I was walking down by Waltons Music a good few years ago, and Pappa Roche's stores walked by, I was about 14 at the time, just after buying leads for my guitar and I stalked after them big time, as I remember Bill Clinton was buzzing about town alson that day, oh well.

Well I tapped Jacoby Shaddix on the shoulder and just said Hi, he stopped everyone stopped and was just like hey what's up and we started chatting, really friendly, smiling asking me how I was even though I was completly stalling everyone he signed my cardboard packaging for the leads, I was well happy.

Still not the most amazing run in, but at that age, to have that connection with someone it was just a really uplifting experience,

I've decided not to try and meet musicians I really respect as they've dissapointed me in the past.

after the RATM gig in the O2 I was walking around the arena looking for my mates, got talking to Cormac from The Answer. was good craic, both us were fairly drunk! very nice guy :)

A point worth making is that people in bands are just people, some might be amiable and friendly, some aloof, some arrogant assholes, but same could be said for anyone you might approach at any time, anywhere. The biggest problem with meeting your idols is that they might turn out to be regular people.

Agree about the Edge was talking to him at the Urinals in pub in Dublin about 10 yrs ago, he went back to his group of friends, went he was leaving we stopped him & asked if we could get his autograph. He waited while we found a pen

And Rob Halford - great fun - total character & all around nice guy

James Hetfield was surprisingly nice when I met him, expected a lot of ego but he was quite the opposite.

E from the Eels accidentally peed on my shoe before their gig once, got chatting after he repeatedly apologized and then asked what song I'd like to hear them play that night.

Presidents of the United States of America were all just great guys. Spent a night hanging out with them and to say that we're nice is an under statement.

Met Henry Rollins over the summer and he could not be more accommodating to his fans. Guy is just a real gent, he came out after a gig to the 30 or so of us who waited and spent about an hour chatting to everyone, signing things and taking photos. Not a hint of ego about him, just a regular down to earth guy who appreciates his fans unlike some.

Rollins can be a bit of an ass at times but I'd well believe that he appreciates his fans, he doesn't take his success for granted at all and punishing work schedule is in part fuelled by a fear of ending up in a wage slave job.

I think with Rollins he can jump the gun at times, that video of him getting all crazy at some kids he thought were making fun of him is a prime example. He's the kind of guy that if you're an ass to then he will be an even bigger one back to you.

He seems to have relaxed his schedule in recent years, though I agree with him that if you the opportunity to do what you love for a living then you should take every opportunity and not be one of those who takes months off to sit around and do nothing.

The one thing that he could do is smile more, its rare to see him smile and never in fan pics. Not one friend who has met him has seen him smile and that includes one friend who spent months working on a show with him.

Oh that vid is high on the cringe list, the Iranian girl he was with was very embarassed, he kinda just identified those people as hipsters (probably correctly) and acted like an ass to them and as hipsters they gave snarky replies which he wasn't expecting. Then he had to backtrack, he pretty much said I hate hipsters, without saying you are hipsters but implying it strongly and then did a 360 when they said "what do you know about us."

There's another vid where as a 20 something he basically acts like the older brother bully to this kid that's interviewing him, not cool at all.

After their gig in Dolans, Limerick in 2002, I met all the lads from Breed77 and One Minute Silence, smoked "stuff" with them on OMS's tour bus. They were such a sound bunch!

Brian Yap Barry asked me where I was from and what my name was and he then said "oh yeah, you're dad taught me mathematics" :D

Chatted to Ricky Warwick at the top of Grafton street one day about 14 years ago. Really nice guy, very approachable and didn't mind some random stranger rabbitting on about The Almighty (they'd split at that point).
