Sacked Boards.ie Moderator Tells All

I had everything. Then I blew it: Sacked Boards.ie Moderator Tells All
    |

MODERATOR Cyril Ronan owned up to 'neglecting his job' after he failed to ban his target 20 members a day, but not without good reason he says.
Ronan was left feeling worthless after he was ironically banned from the site indefinitely for gross misconduct and failure to adhere to the moderation rules laid out by the Irish Internet giant.

"I know I didn't do my job properly but I just didn't see the point in banning people anymore." Power said.

"When I started the job eight months ago I was told to ban at least 20 members a day. They gave me a 734 page rule book and told me I was in charge of the 'Mustard' and 'Carlow south east' forums."

With this huge responsibility, Cyril Ronan soon felt he was on top of the world. However, the laws of nature were soon chomping at his motherboard and Ronan knew that eventually what goes up, must come down.

"At first I was quite nervous, I didn't know what I was doing. The whole thing was so surreal. After all, they hand picked me out of thousands of online members to do this job. I couldn't leave mustard, Carlow South East or myself down.

"In my first few weeks I just started moving peoples threads around. For example, some idiot would make a Ketchup or mayonnaise comment in the Mustard forum. I would warn them and ban them from boards.ie for a whole week.

"For the first time in my life I felt it - Power!"

In fact, Cyril surpassed his 20 member a day banning target and soon moved up the boards.ie ladder, prompting the company to declare him one of their toughest moderators to date.

"Things were just spiralling out of control. I was running some of the biggest forums on the website like the 'After Hours' forum and the whole 'Regions' forum. I was literally running the on-line version of the country" the 26-year-old said.

"Women were IMing me everyday looking for advice on everything from avatar pictures to font sizes. I was going through them like socks. I was knocking a case of Red Bull a week just to keep awake. I was peaking and I knew it.

"Unfortunately, too much of the high life just catches up with you eventually. I never wanted it to end."

On November 17th 2010 Cyril had a nervous breakdown and was admitted to St. James hospital in Dublin.

"It was probably the toughest time of my life. Knowing that someone else was now moderating my forums." the 2010 moderator of the year said.

"When I eventually left hospital after being gone for the whole afternoon, I realised what had happened. I looked around at my bedsit and it was littered with empty cans of energy drinks and pizza boxes. It dawned on me that I was slowly killing myself for nothing. I wasn't even getting paid for this ****. What was I doing?

"I decided to not use the Internet for a while."

"It must have been at least two hours later when I logged back on to boards.ie. I found a warning IM from the chief of operations. He said that I was slipping down a slippery slope and if I didn't get back into form soon I'd be demoted to moderating the 'Prison' forum (The prison forum deals with already banned members who want to appeal their case and get back into the prestigious website)"

Cyril soon got back on-line and started moderating again.

"After the IM, I was like: 'How can they treat me like this? I have devoted nearly eight months of my life to them. All for nothing!" the former No.1 said.

"I didn't feel like I wanted to ban people anymore. So I just started letting everyone have their say. Even if they were in the wrong forum. I just let it run wild."

Things got quite crazy on boards.ie and it wasn't long after that Mr Ronan finally got his banning IM. It came as no surprise to the once 'tough guy of boards'how the tables turned so quickly.

"I'm kinda relieved in a way. My life is better now" he said.

"I'm going out side more now and I have made new friends online. I haven't looked back. However, I do have a peek at the Mustard forum now and again to see if the new guy is doing his job right. Its not easy you know. It takes a certain kind of someone to moderate."

    Par on course, I'd say...

    2010 mod of the year?
    Lies. Damned lies.
They retired the awards in 2008 after I won mod of the year. They just knew that I would never be topped.

    I do sympathise somewhat though.
They fired me for being too honest.
Being a Freemason, DeVore decided that it would be best to sack me because I told too many secrets.
I'll never forgive him for that. Never!!!!

One of these days I'll be going through women like socks. Right now it's more like I'm going through them like tee-shirts. Only a couple a week, and even then so long as the pits don't smell I get a few extra days out of them...

He once mailed threatening to ban me if I didn't offer up names who were plotting against the smooth running of the site, I gave him 10 names and they got banned, but I didn't, result.

    Don't mess with Jedward.
My god-daughter is going to be dancing as part of their opening act later this month.
As odd as they are, I'm now happy they exist because of the opportunity they have given to her.

To answer your question, I've been drunk for just over 2 years now.
It was an interesting experiment, and, while I did do a lot of damage to my body, I feel that it was well worth it.
The experiment ends in 2 weeks or thereabouts. There will be a week or so of withdrawal drinking.

Just cracked my 9th and have a nice buzz going.
Also just took my diabetes pill.
Turns out that drinking 2 litres of Coke to cure your hangover does some damage. Luckily enough I suffer more from low blood sugar levels than high. This means I can still drink Coke. I'm Charlie Sheen winning.

No. I used to only get drunk 2 or 3 nights a week.
When I'm sober, I'm really unsociable, so the only time we would talk is when I was drunk.

Yes, there may have been nights when I had 3 or 4 cans, but it's been a long time since that amount has made me drunk.

In September 2009 I began drinking every night at 6pm. I've drank at least 10 cans every night since then. 12 for the last year.

I ****ing hate talking to people when I'm sober.

Once upon a time I was also dizzy with the power of the boards.ie mod position. At the time, my doctor prescribed me Heroin to ween me off the initial addiction. He thought a period of Methadone afterwards would get me off my relieving drug but he ended up signing up to boards himself, posting daily on After Hours and forgot to write up my prescription as a result.

It's not easy banning your GP but it had to be done at the time.....there were too many 'titty' references!

    Thats the thing about mods...
They get used because they dont get paid.
Take boards.ie ... its a very big message board. But in order to function correctly it needs mods. People who help to maintain the site. But yet they still dont get paid.

Which you got to laugh at the internship threads on here. People slagging them for being one big con (and rightfully so) ... But is being a mod on here not getting used aswell? I know one could say its "unpaid help to support the site" - But someone is making money from this site.

What if I created, say ... a dating site. I too would need mods to scan for bogus profiles, to accept and decline images, to handle complaints etc. I too could spin their help as "supporting the site" but yet, i keep the money to myself ;)

    Think that's bad?

I used to be a ****ing admin, back when it was just DeVore and Cloud running the gaff.

I'd a great time, I'd put random word like "really" and "like" and "lovely" into the word filter.

I'd site ban all the AH mods and let the kids run wild on the forum for a few hours.

I added DeVore to the Registered User user lists for a day or so...

    Thems were the days.

Now look at me, I can't even fart in some forums with out getting infracted.

Yeah but even if they weren't mods, chances are they'd be on Boards fairly regularly anyway whereas with a job or internship, you probably not going to spend more time there than you have to. I'm sure also it's not without its benefits which I would assume are comparable to those offered to subscribers.
