I think german style font can look quite delightful on some classic marques.

Far more tossery are people who pre book and pay for number plates like 10 - D - 101010

    Fkin binary loving steamers.

Not as bad as those green coats that have a small German flag on the arms.

I never knew that seeing a coat can be so annoying.

It's mad, every car here seems to have them

So people that have them are tossers? How do you figure that if their taste is to put a different font on their own property? Or would that just be a sweeping generalisation with no back-up whatsoever?

Off topic but shouldn't a mod normally state on a thread when it's moved? I got a ban from PI before for posting a smart ass reply on an AH thread that was moved after I posted. Didn't bother me all that much as I don't frequent PI anyhow! ;)

    Because their owners like them.
The same as some owners will buy Fiats and Renaults.

Strangely enough, mine were all stuck to vehicles in Germany. You know where they use German reg plates.

WTF is the point in having them here. The "ah sure its ok" attitude in Ireland when it comes to enforcing the law is ridiculous.

You didn't say that though did you :D

As for people putting them on here and the law..
There is no law saying you cannot use them.

Yeah, I've been spotting loads of non-German cars with German plates on them lately.
Fair enough on an M5 but not on a Starlet.

I'd never have them on anything.

No, he's right, there was a study done on german plates a while back, the findings were that people with them are indeed tossers, and the plates are naff. Professor Hans Gruber who conducted the survey said "the worse people we found were the ones that thought it was ok on a german marque, but wrong on all other makes".

    Link

I notice quite a few cars with plastic number plates and German font of late... a half baked effort if you will, if you are gonna go for German number plates at least get pressed metal ones.

In general I don't find German number plates overly offensive looking, reason being is there are cars with far worse tat stuck onto them. Just as an example, mid 90's Corollas and Lancers with newer BMW and Volvo type aerials stuck on the roof. Having said that German plates do look quite naff on some cars, no doubt about it

Amazing the opinions people take the time to put into words , they are number plates on somebody elses car why does it bother some people so much , get on with your own lives or just sit looking at the mirror telling yourself how great your take on everything is and that should make you happy or would it......

I didn't judge , first I made a comment about what amazed me , then I asked a couple of questions with an alternate activity to looking at number plates thrown in. Sorry if you felt judged or was that your chance to post a humorous comment and you just couldn't pass up the opportunity?

Eh - thats 'there are 10 types of people.....'

As for German reg plates, some people think they look better - its their car, and the plates are perfectly legible, not sure what the issue is. The legislation regarding the plates is not black and white and refers to a plain font. Technically the stroke of the font is off, but so are plenty of the ones which 'look legal'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,680 ✭✭✭mondeo

Maybe german fonts are not illegal but I just see german plates as the must have extra for young lads hanging around Halfords in felty old 00' 01' 02' VW's, decade old 316's and the odd ball in a green corsa trying to fit in.

Yes somtimes I see them on newer cars but it's not often. I noticed a few newer regular cars I use to see localy that removed them, I wonder what their reasons were for removing them? Maybe they have seen the old bangers knocking about that seem to have them fitted and wish to isolate themselves from that group.

The real P!ss takers have those fake little german tax disc thingys on their plates along with the fecking 'D'. Seriously what are you doing? If your a die hard car fan in ireland at least demonstrate that by showing us that you know how to follow the basic motoring laws in your own country.

Eh sorry about that rant but there you go.

This was a bugbear of mine, I was curious as to where they stood. I looked at the relevant legislation, I argued with Guards of all ranks (different opinions from all of them) After several conversations (over pints) with various members of the legal profession it seems that:

If you have stickers on yer plate, you know, the little round things: - Bad.
If you have "legs" on yer digits (technically known as "Serif"): - Bad.
If you have gaps in yer digits circumference (stencil type): - Bad

Basically, if you want to stay onboard with the law, stick with the boring type.

I have them on me 5 series. I like the look of them with the black German surrounds. That's all that matters to me. I also have the stickers on them. Never once been challenged on them by AGS.

It should only be German cars though same for the jap plates, seen too many of them on euro cars!!

Anyway People do things like this to their car to personalize them.

For me its a 100% generalisation. As much as someone has the right to put different number plates on their car thinking it'l look cooler, others have exactly as much of a right to think they look like tits by doing so. You could say the same thing about what clothes someone wears. Its a superficial thing.

Personally I don't get it, but that's just me... A car is still the same car regardless of what number plates it has. I do like the shape of the font on the German plates, but as for people thinking they'll look cooler by having different number plates on their car then that's just silly. Its not going to make the car faster, more desirable or more valuable.

Yep, we're all allowed have an opinion.

Maybe back in the very beginning it was cool, an underground thing when they were probably put on appropriate (i.e high-end German) cars. When you start seeing them on Skodas and old Jap yokes though they've descended beyond naff. They also look anal (and anal is not cool).

    IMHO;)...

I cannot see what the problem is here. Some folk like them and some do not. Personally I like them but prefer a set of pressed metal plates anyday. Plastic ones look crap Imo.

Its a bit like some people say why do irish people eat chinese food....

Spotted a disco 3 today with german style plates with the little tax symbols. It was a very nice looking disco but the plates just looked odd tbh.

    There is.

I put them on every german car i have owned (6 out of 9). I much prefer this font to the standard irish font. The "illegal" part is the height/width of the lettering. Everything else conforms.

I go through every nct with them, and never a problem.

The one garda who did try to do me for them, forgot about it after i tore him a new one for wasting my time on another issue he tried to book me for. He tried to make an example of me infront of my peers when he'd no idea that a law exists. To this day he won't wave back when i salute him in traffic :pac:

UNless thy have a vernkier caliper with them to measure the lettering then what can they do?
That is like them standing in court saying. "You honour, I had no speed detection equipment at the time but I saw him with my own two eyes dong 10mph over the limit"

Preeching to the choir man. But theres a difference between them needing to measure them to prove it, and their being NO LAW as you stated.
