I do think Rossi will call it a day now, if not then his performances will not be the same anyway.

It was of course a freak accident and thats all that can be said really, but Rossi has been around enough now and it may well signal the end for him.

That was the first thing that came to my mind. This is the most difficult season of his career and no doubt the coming weeks will be the most difficult of his life. I really dont think anyone can know what way Vale will react to this until we see him at Valencia.

Rest in Peace Marco. I'm still in shock, a great talent taken away far too early, he will never be forgotten.

I would imagen that there would be no-way that he could race at that track again anyway,,,for obvious reasons...But then again no one knows what motovates another person at times like this,,,Anyway he was going to be a great talent for the future, and was the only reason that i bothered watching MGP this year,,,
    Sadly missed Dude RIP #58..

What a sad day. Marco was one of the very few who have had the ability to run with the "aliens" up front, and he was only going to get better.
It was particularly bad to see his girlfriend watching on and I believe his father was there too. As soon as I saw the crash I turned off the TV, I just had an awful feeling.
He would have had great experiences in life through the sport and a small consolation would be that it all ended instantly.
It has to be said though, that anyone who takes a bike out onto a track knows of the dangers. Rossi will have a hard time over this but I don't think it will influence him to quit, he is the model professional.

    RIP Marco

I wonder if the straps let go? They are designed to take a certain load, then let go for obvious reasons. I remember a FF incident in the 90's where one car climbed over the other and pulled the guys helmet off. People were going nuts over it, but had the helmet not come off, it could have been worse.

My cousin was involved in that accident, 100% agree with you on the load.

RIP Marco. Terrible loss. Awful week for motorsport.

It has been reported that his father was with him in the medical centre when he regained consciousness for a few minutes. He was only 24, it's unimaginable what his family and his girlfriend and friends must be going through.

This is horrible in every way really. Simoncelli was without any doubt a champion in the making. The results he was getting on that Gresini Honda were spectacular considering the fact that he out qualified the 3 factory teams twice this season alone was testament to his skill. From watching Moto GP it was easy to see Marco gave 110% and it actually annoyed the other riders because he would constantly dive for the smallest gaps on the race track. Racing is dominated at every level by Factory teams but as a privateer he was constantly ripping up the form book. From his year in the top flight he definately made a big impact.

Also, it adds another down point to what has being an amazing season of motorsport from the grass roots right to the top. Motorsport gets next to no recognition here in Ireland even though some home grown talents are up there with the very best in a good few areas. The death of Dan Wheldon last week, Marco this week makes a sombre list of 5 racers killed in top championships this year. Motorsport is a dangerous sport, we all know and understand that, but its the thrill of threading the needle that drives those involved and unfortunately accidents do happen but thats the nature of the beast.

    Riposa in pace Marco

    Thats unofficial RTE policy, IMO.
Even when Joey Dunlop was at his pomp RTE never carried any of the racing.
They covered his funeral and that was it.
BBC NI cover quite a bit of motorsport, including the Ulster GP and lots of local stuff.

I remember being in work early one Sunday morning and RTE had a page on their website introducing the sport for that particular day. Somewhere near the bottom of it they had sentence about Eugene Laverty being on the front row of the grid for a race that day, despite the fact that there was no WSBK on that weekend. Where they got the information from I'll never know.

To think that next season there will be two Irish/Northern Irish racers competing at the top of the WSBK rankings with little or no coverage in this country is pretty disgraceful. If it was F1 they'd be all over it.

The only time you seem to see motorbikes on RTE is when PJ Gallagher (in fairness to him) is doing something with them.

Anyway, that's a debate for another time and place.

SHAME on the Daily Mail for showing pictures of the crash on their website today. And I'm guessing they're in the paper too. What purpose does that serve? I feel sick.

I'm delighted that embed doesn't work. Why post that?

Is it not quite obvious from the fact that he died that it was "very bad"? If people are that bloodthirsty that they want to see it, they know where to go to find it.

for the way you raced. your ability on a bike was plane to see. You were only coming to the pinnacle of your career.
You will be so sorely missed Marco.
GP's will not be as exciting for a long time to come.

After this tragedy who would be surprised if Rossi did retire but I feel that as a tribute from one racer to another the same as Sete Gibernau did following the death of his team mate Daijiro Kato 8 years ago Rossi will do what ever it takes to win in Valencia. I'm well aware of what the Ducati is like this year but when riding with a passion who knows what Rossi could do.

One very sad motorcyclist and very long time Moto GP fan.

    from autosport

Paolo Simoncelli has paid his respects to a 'special, honest and pure son' and expressed his gratitude at the outpouring of grief following Marco Simoncelli's fatal accident in the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Speaking to Italian media, Paolo Simoncelli said the support shown in the wake of the accident had provided comfort, and insisted there was no blame to be apportioned.

"Marco was a very special person, and perhaps people have understood what he was like. If he had to swear he would, he was like that. Most of all he was honest, he was really pure," said Simoncelli Sr.

"On top of that he was a warrior, and maybe that's why he died. Had he let the bike go...but last Sunday he wanted to win. He was again the Marco we had at the beginning of the season, but now he knew what to do, he knew everything."

Greeted by hundreds of fans when he landed in Rome with his son's body, Paolo said: "Honestly I couldn't believe it: it would be bull**** if I said I'm happy, but it pleases me. We didn't realise all this, but it's a very nice thing.

"Tomorrow evening, after the end of the funeral, we'll be alone. It'll be terrible. But now I have you and all the people that come visit us. That can only please us.

"Marco was always available with all the journalists, as with all the people that would come to disturb him while he was eating. In fact he would scold me when I complained. That's how he was.

"Marco was never judged badly, he was always judged for what he was and for the way he presented himself. I loved him, and he loved me. Marco was great and that's it. What a shame.

"He needed everything around him to work. He needed Aligi Deganello - his guru and chief technician - his team, and his dad, who would piss him off sometimes, as he would say. Before the start we would shake hands and hug. I did that on Sunday too, but I guess I got something wrong. It didn't go as usual.

"He enjoyed all the simple things he had: he liked his house, his dog, the grass... in fact on Sunday he told me 'I'm tired, I want to go back home', because we had been away to prepare for Malaysia, which for him has always been difficult: nutrition, he took an ice bath to cool down before the race... It was perfect, he was sure he would do well. But he told me 'I want to go back home, dad.'"

Paolo arrived at the scene of the crash as Marco was being lifted onto a stretcher and carried to the ambulance. He says he had called to his son, but Marco was already dead. He says he also bears no ill will to the bearers, who fumbled the stretcher on their way to the ambulance.

"I was thereabouts, but Marco was dead already. I was 10 metres away, but Marco was already dead, it changed nothing.

"I helped them: when they got back up and passed the stretcher over to my side of the guard rail I took the stretcher to place it in the ambulance and held Marco's hand and called him 'Ciao Marco', but he was gone already.

"There was nothing that could be done. Nothing would have changed in that case. As for the rest, maybe more (attention) is needed, but these people try to do their best, so it's useless... But in our case Marco died on impact.

"They say God summons the best to heaven. I don't know. I wish that's how it is."

Paolo said Marco's funeral would almost certainly be held this Thursday, as a private function for relatives, friends, fellow riders and Gresini Racing staff.

Paola Simoncelli has suggested a minute of *Casino* at Valencia for a send off.
Every bike from every class revving its engine! Sounds class and hopefully Eurosport will cover it.
