Ah yes! I remember now, he really did some great work. Also made those Negatron -5v adapters and the little voltage meters too.

I did the mental thing and went ahead and ordered one of those Pony III ashtray holders.

To be fair to the guy selling them, they actually look really well fabricated and he's made the mount for them too.

Ah that lad, he is still making arcade bits? I ordered up a few bits over time for a Naomi cab (JAMMA->JVS adapter loom, marquee holder) and a kick harness adapter for an Atomiswave. Quality was top notch

    Haha!

Absolutely crazy to see both the MV25TA and SC25-4 in the same photo.

The SC25-4 is an incredibly rare 25 inch monitor version of the (already rare-ish) and mega popular/expensive SC19.

Don't even get me started though on how rare the MV25TA is. I remember a few years back when they only theoretically existed in flier pictures...!

Any recommendations on how to store PCBs? I've got mine wrapped in antistatic bubble wrap at the moment, but are bags + a box better?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭Mucashinto

Only twigged recently that some of you will have different cabs for vertical games or for different button layouts/cab forms you particularly like etc. Seems like recreating the Arcade experience is a far bigger commitment than the retro consoles, but do you find the main difference is a cab itself? Like would any kind of mame emulation, in any quality/size of cab repro, trounce an accurate version but with tv & controller iyo?

Anti static bags in cardboard boxes is what I do. Mine are all a bit tatty at this point though and are due a refresh.

Corstat boxes are the Rolls Royce version if you fancy splashing out!

The one core component for me is the CRT. As long as you've a CRT in the machine, you'll get that arcade 'feeling' whatever you hook up emulation wise. You'll turn your machine on in a low lit room and it'll glow.

If you're missing that, it doesn't feel like an arcade machine.

A consumer CRT TV with old consoles hooked up is a far better experience than an expensive arcade machine with an LCD for example.

You thinking about getting a cab? Japanese candy cabinets by far offer you the smallest footprint to screen size ratio out of all cabinets, so are ideal for squeezing into Irish houses. Can sit down at them too so they're a lot more comfortable to play on.

I must grab a load of larger bags so!

@Mucashinto - sitting at an authentic cabinet is a great experience, but CRT and console with good cables is a similar experience.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about getting one recently. Tbh I thought any of this stuff would be a major ordeal but after getting the CRT and now wondering why I hesitated so long, yeah some kind of arcade would be next preference.

I don’t really play arcade games too much on any of the emulation stuff I use and I was thinking that’s maybe because I’m playing them with a controller on the couch and that’s never going to get close to capturing it?

Maybe I should start with getting an arcade stick and plugging it into the mister! But they do look very attractive. Slippery slope this…🙂

All mine are boxed, mostly in anti static bags and boxed with anti static foam, I actually have a load(10ish) of spare PCB sized matching boxes, most with foam inserts if anyone interested I’ll stick them in the market place, just taking up space and I stopped collecting boards so my collection isn’t going to get drastically bigger

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,061 ✭✭✭Colonel Panic

Definitely put them on the marketplace if you’re thinking of clearing some space!

    Is this real?

Some serious selection of games if it is

Yep seen it on mentioned on Twitter earlier. They're still really overpriced however, screens are absolute tripe with garbage sticks and buttons. 199 is the absolute max I'd pay for them.

My embarrassingly expensive Pony ashtray holder landed with customs, only managed to get hit with 20 euro import tax which I'm not going to question.

Hopefully it'll be there when I get home today and ready to mount on the cabinet. Now to hunt down some ashtrays... I used to have three Taito ones but two went missing after a party about ten years ago when they were being legitimately used as ashtrays!

Poetic justice in a way as they were probably originally stolen from an arcade in Japan.

Ashtray holder arrived, looks gorgeous - went to install it, couldn't find the bloody hole needed in the bottom of the panel to mount it!

    PXL_20220815_165445603.jpg

Bottom of my panel had two much smaller holes but no big one. Lots and lots of head scratching, scouring the internet for photos of the bottom of a Pony control panel, but they just don't exist. Absolutely zero idea where it was meant to connect to.

    PXL_20220815_184657860.jpg

Tried removing some of the panel mounting bolts to see if it might fit through one of those holes, nope, all way too small.

Was convinced my cabinet must be a bit of a later model with a different mounting method that somehow connected to these two smaller holes and I'd have to drill out the panel to get it to work with this holder.

I eventually found this one black and white grainy image on Arcade Otaku from an old Japanese flyer and gave it a good eyeballing.

    screenshot ashray.JPG

Originally it looked like there's an extra hole thats missing from my panel... however after some further eye squinting, it looks like might be using one of the panel bolt holes that I DIDN'T try removing.

Popped the bolt out and what do you know, the hole it was in is actually a few MM wider than every other hole on the panel!, exactly the same dimensions as my ashtray holder mount, couldn't believe it! The bolt currently in it was too small for the hole.

You can see the size difference in the bolt removed. When the bolt was in place there was absolutely no way of telling the hole's diameter was actually wider.

    Installed and in place

    PXL_20220815_191127738.jpg

    PXL_20220815_190508911.jpg

That was way too many photos and head scratching for what was really such a simple install in the end! :D

That's a lot of work/expense for an ashtray holder, what are you on now, 50 a day?

I tried putting a Taito ashtray in it and it just fell through 🤣

Gate Ninety have those red Taito buckets so I'm going to lash one of them in it instead, looks like they fit perfectly.

Great work, could you put a drink into the bucket and swivel it back in?

New speakers in the astro, new acetone sheets to make the marquee more vibrant.

You can see what it was like here:

So I have lots of these sheets left over, any other astro owners make yourselves known and ill send you some

Having a house warming this weekend, my mam and my aunt will be among some of the folks coming over so I've put the 60 in 1 vertical board back into the Pony for the competitive Pacman and Space Invaders I forsee 😁

It's some job alright, was the old acetone difficult to remove? The new one really does pop!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,574 ✭✭✭eddhorse

Its right over the top of the old one, the old one is built into the plexi.

Just cut some pieces that cover the old colours, doesn't have to be perfect as it wont be seen behind the black.

Very easy to do if anyone else has an astro, i bought way too much.

Fired up the Atomiswave SD and groovymame for the first time in a loooong time. Surprisingly it all worked first go

I was full sure the monitor wouldn't click on or suffer some firm of collapse but all good.

l knew from the last time I had used it that the 100 yen coins were getting stuck in the coin mech. These mechs can be a b1tch to adjust but thankfully a simple small screw turn got it up and running smoothly again.

I've forgotten so much about the cabs so posting a couple of questions here if anyone can enlighten.

I noticed the physical cab coin counter doesn't increase when coins inserted while playing name. The game adds credits but the counter itself doesn't move. I vaguely recall this being a mame or jpac issue maybe. Can anyone confirm or advise how to implement?

Secondly, I have 20 or so 100 yen coins. Would love more coins but does an arcade token exist that acts like 100 yen alternative and get accepted in coin mech as per 100 yen setting. I'm reluctant to start adjusting the coin mech for a totally different coin.

    Thanks all

For the coin mech on my Egret 3 I swapped out the mech for a new one that takes 20 cent coins. I still have the 100 yen mech if I ever decide to swap back, but I enjoy sticking euro currency in the thing 🙂
