Regulations on newly built car trailers.

Firslty apologies if this is the wrong section. Not sure where to put it.

I have built a car trailer in the past, and am considering a new build. However i've been told by a friend that there either are new regulations or upcoming new regulations on self built trailers. Inrespect to amount of axles, having them "NCT'd" (inspected and passed as safe), etc.

Could anyone shine some light on this. Is there new regualtions in the wing, have they been implimented or is my mate merely pulling my chain.

    Any help appreciated.

    Ez.

Not yet but I believe all trailers sold from 29 Oct 2012 will have to be type approved. I think you'd still be able to self build but the components would have to be type approved, brakes, hubs, towing gear etc and you'll have to get it approved. It comes into force in the UK this year.

In the much longer term, registration and testing of trailers is likely to happen, already does in several countries.

This friend was telling me that brakes would have to meet a certain type, grade, etc. as with all other componants so what your saying makes sense.

I wonder will it be retrospective. So if you have something built before the date they possibly bring in such regulations would it be necessary to test all trailers or just the ones built after this date?

    Thanks for the reply though.

In the future, it'll all be factory plated trailers that'll be of any value.

Regulations aren't usually retro-respective but I think we'll start to see a lot of ratty old unbraked trailers disappear especially as AGS and RSA take more interest in enforcement.

In the very long term it could be a problem for me as my military trailer uses a NATO hitch, in some countries it's impossible to register them as they are not type approved despite them being the strongest and safest hitch (hook and eye)

how can they tell if a self build is 10 minutes or 10 years old though if it is built to a very good standard? unless ALL trailers had to be upgraded to type approved stuff or scrapped I cant see how it would be enforced

To be fair, if a trailer was 10 years old it would have needed to be well maintained to look "newish"..

I think there will be a transition period where old trailers will be allowed, then at some point all trailers will have to be type approved. I am sure natural attrition will remove most from the road.

RE: Sankey trailers - could it not be a "commercial" trailer, but then probably meaning it will need to be a commercial tow vehicle??
