From all I have read it is quite an odd case of racism though. The reported word he used was "negrito". This word seems to be in common use amongst many South Americans, a term of endearment when used as such. The difference is that Suarez used it as a term of abuse.

    So...

Any of the people who spent the majority of this thread insulting Evra, calling him a liar and saying he deserved to be banned feeling like apologizing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,396 ✭✭✭✭noodler

He has been found guilty of racial abuse and has been punished. I know you Liverpool fans are annoyed because you've lost an important player but give the FA a break. The FA should be applauded. Racism shouldn't be tolerated, said in a joking way or not.

Blame Suarez for letting his team down for a significant chunk of the season.

    This to be honest.

Nothing as Evra was not charged with anything, whether that is two faced or not.
Evra put in a complaint - if Suarez had countered that then maybe
but he didnt and Evra wasn't charged

    General abuse?

I'd imagine quite a large amount of "general abuse" is thrown around at corners/free-kicks/altercations where racism wasn't brought into it. If you banned one player for "general abuse" you'd be setting an extremely dangerous precedent.

    That's what's happened.

scandalous to the point of being hillarious. The club should and will appeal this through to the High Court and Suarez should sue to clear his name.
Yeah, you know more than people who actually have all the relevant information and position to decide these things. Good one.

    LFC statement
Liverpool Football Club is very surprised and disappointed with the decision of the Football Association Commission to find Luis Suarez guilty of the charges against him.

We look forward to the publication of the Commission's Judgment. We will study the detailed reasons of the Commission once they become available, but reserve our right to appeal or take any other course of action we feel appropriate with regards to this situation.

We find it extraordinary that Luis can be found guilty on the word of Patrice Evra alone when no-one else on the field of play - including Evra's own Manchester United teammates and all the match officials - heard the alleged conversation between the two players in a crowded Kop goalmouth while a corner kick was about to be taken.

The Club takes extremely seriously the fight against all forms of discrimination and has a long and successful track record in work relating to anti-racist activity and social inclusion. We remain committed to this ideal and equality for all, irrespective of a person's background.

LFC considers racism in any form to be unacceptable - without compromise. It is our strong held belief, having gone over the facts of the case, that Luis Suarez did not commit any racist act. It is also our opinion that the accusation by this particular player was not credible - certainly no more credible than his prior unfounded accusations.

It is key to note that Patrice Evra himself in his written statement in this case said 'I don't think that Luis Suarez is racist'. The FA in their opening remarks accepted that Luis Suarez was not racist.

Luis himself is of a mixed race family background as his grandfather was black. He has been personally involved since the 2010 World Cup in a charitable project which uses sport to encourage solidarity amongst people of different backgrounds with the central theme that the colour of a person's skin does not matter; they can all play together as a team.

He has played with black players and mixed with their families whilst with the Uruguay national side and was Captain at Ajax Amsterdam of a team with a proud multi-cultural profile, many of whom became good friends.

It seems incredible to us that a player of mixed heritage should be accused and found guilty in the way he has based on the evidence presented. We do not recognise the way in which Luis Suarez has been characterised.

It appears to us that the FA were determined to bring charges against Luis Suarez, even before interviewing him at the beginning of November. Nothing we have heard in the course of the hearing has changed our view that Luis Suarez is innocent of the charges brought against him and we will provide Luis with whatever support he now needs to clear his name.

We would also like to know when the FA intend to charge Patrice Evra with making abusive remarks to an opponent after he admitted himself in his evidence to insulting Luis Suarez in Spanish in the most objectionable of terms. Luis, to his credit, actually told the FA he had not heard the insult.

Kind of knew this would happen. Either Suarez would be innocent or a large portion of Pool fans would claim it's a complete joke anyways if proven guilty by the FA.

Who said it was a joke? You are literally making **** up here.

Read the rules Mr Legal Eagle.

    I have.

That's why I was on the right track from the beginning. I wasn't running around making irrelevant points repeatedly throughout the thread and ignoring what was plain to see.

Which is what you and the usual suspects did all the way through this thread. I'm slightly ashamed to be a Liverpool supporter, but not because of Suarez, because of the dire behaviour of you and others in defence of the use of racist abuse.

Was there any evidence proving that Suarez was guilty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,439 ✭✭✭sideswipe

The funny thing is, if he hadn't admitted calling him Negrito (with the defense that it's a term of endearment) it would most likely ended up being a case of 'your word V my word', which would have made it much harder, possibly impossible to prove and convict.

From a Liverpool point-of-view, I think the best thing to do would be to limit the damage. Accept the decision, no appeal, start the ban tomorrow, and then he can be back for the 2nd leg of the Carling Cup

Gutted with the decision, seems overly harsh but if they maintain it for other incidents then I won't complain. Suarez was a fool, is being rightly punished, let's get it over with and get on with things as quickly as possible

The bold bit. Would you equate racism with being foolish? I find it a lot more serious than that

Cop the fcuk on. Labelling someone a racist for something they said in the heat of the moment during a passionate derby game is complete nonsense. The world has gone completely and utterly mad

I really hope I have the pleasure of watching Evra suffer a horrific career ending injury because it would be incredibly satisfying, I would actually go out on the beer to celebrate.

He is a rotten liar and an excuse for both a footballer and a human being.

That ban is a joke, i can understand that racism is serious and it warrants a hefty penalty but the joke is really the FA. Why one punishment for Suarez and probably different for other players, is a certain kind of racism more 'acceptable' than another? Mr. Carroll would want to start paying some of that transfer fee back and fairly lively.
What other racism incidents are you comparing this to?

That's kind of my point tbh.

4 game ban for general abuse, doubled cause their was reference to race. Albeit in response to Evra bringing ethnicity into it.

One can only assume there'll be more to it than has appeared in the press cause as it stands with the information in the public domain Evra & Suarez did the exact same thing, with Suarez getting an 8 game ban for his part.

    Eh say what?

A really disgusting statement from Liverpool

Shocked by the ban - they took so long to reach it I figured they felt it wasn't clear either way. 8 game ban is a severe one. There will obviously be an appeal. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Dont think 8 games is severe at all , its getting off pretty lightly ,

Although Im surprised he got banned , I was of the thinking it would be very hard to ban him without actual video evidence , and I had slightly bought into Suarez's version of events,

I wonder whats keeping the Police and CPS, an absolutely absurd amount of time has passed in the Terry case.

If Suarez appeals the case and fails could he be looking at a longer ban ?

I wouldn't exactly equate racism with been foolish. I think racists are fools for thinking what they do, that's about it

I don't think Suarez is a racist - he used racist words yes, but there is a difference. It happens in the heat of the moment. I called Yakubu the n-word in the heat of the moment once, that doesn't make me a racist

100% behind Suarez and the club on this matter.

Loads of sad points-scoring on here. Rival 4th place chasing teams fans just loving the verdict. Shows most don't give a fck about the racism aspect, just their own clubs chances of success this season. Comments like "now we won't have to put up with seeing his diving for a while" are just pathetic bitterness at the guys footballing ability and have nothing to do with racism.

so we should be allowed racially abuse each other if we want without any consequences?
