    I wasn't issued with a polo **** myself! :D

To back up your point Hooch, as a Reserve I was issued new uniform after a year and a half! I didn't need any of it, bar the 2 extra short sleeve shirts. Uniforms should be replaced on request imo.

I also feel the grey jackets are redundant. They don't look great, and they aren't very good for hi-vis; try finding a beat patrol holding a prisoner when they're wearing those jackets in a crowd!

They're just for the mounted unit, what what.

when i was out in the floors the only part of the uniform i wore was the pull up pants and the water proof jacket, wore combats pants and outdoor gear on top under the uniform jacket, first time i was comfortable on duty. i was able to move easy, climb walls with easy, move through the water and able to carry people, (sounds like i dealt with the floods on my own :p ) i know that if i was in full uniform i would have struggled doing these things

i was thinking of putting something on paper but thought better off it as i am a reserve and it would be better coming from a full member, and i cant really go to the GRA :p

in the private sector if i was to submit a letter outlining my health and safety worry's about my uniform to my employer and how impractical it is and something was to happen to me due to the problems i have out lined my employer would be liable and due to legal responsibly have to change the uniform and make it fit for purpose. seen this possibly maybe someone in management may just start to become forward thinking and do something:rolleyes:

or am i just use to the private sector and things moving in a logical way
as a reserve you would be laughed out the door putting pen to paper on something like uniform....
uniform is sh*te get used to it...

that why i said i not do it, but i don't agree with the attitude of get use to it, if something wrong you go and fix it, cant believe that GRA has not raised this as am issue, maybe if they stopped having a pop at the reserve then they can move onto something more important and useful to members of all ranks

I'm NOT talking about the GRA. I've nothing pleasant to say right now so I'm not saying anything about them!

I agree about if you've a problem with something it should be addressed. I am a strong believer in that. Regardless of what rank is held, everything should all be addressed in a professional and courteous manner.

or maybe the money being spent on the reserve could be spent on uniform and equipment for regular members. It's just a thought!

    agreed.

as there was money to spend on uniforms recently would it not be better to say that the money should have being spent in a more productive and beneficial manner for all ranks to get practical uniforms and personal gear that we all sorely need.

Considering they're attempting to close hospitals left right and centre and cutting the Ambulance Service, it's unlikely that AGS will get much in the way of funding between now and 2013. I'd say the country will be lucky just not to have to form vigilante mobs to chase down criminals the way things are going with more horror stories of AGS lacking patrol cars, etc in some areas.

That said, funding for operational policing is the last thing that should be cut, in my opinion. While this isn't the politics or economics forum, the almost €1bn they're giving to guaranteed bondholders next week would go a long way in terms of securing patrol cars, GPS, MDT & ANPR kit, etc. Not to mention more mules or new uniform kit.

    Ok, rant over.

I get the feeling that anyone with an alternative view on the reserve is not welcome here! why? Am I in a reserve forum and if so apologies!

We're discussing the uniform, not the validity of the reserve, if you want to discuss that AGAIN, open a new thread.

EDIT: Mods sorry if this comes across as back seat modding, Just dislike threads being derailed like this.

But there is currently funding for replacing uniforms(in a roundabout way), a bad uniform costs the same as a good one there's no reason to suggest that providing better uniform should cost more. Ok a ground up re-design might incur higher initial costs, but may lead to less replacing of damaged, unsuitable badly designed gear in the long run.

so who is in charge of this, and how would it be best to sort out this problem we all have

A lot of this stuff making its way into service here , airport police , some sections of the Gardai , various dog and customs units.

There is an Irish agent but from past experience you never leave the guy sitting behind the desk order the stuff. BUT THAT'S GENERALLY WHAT HAPPE
    NS.

5.11 great gear have been using it years for recreation and luckily enough got some of it professionally after I made a submission it did take 18 months though and it was in better times.

Yesterday I saw a Guard driving a Traffic Corps car wearing a dark navy/black polo shirt with his vest over it.

Ok he might have been in the road transport unit, or might have been cycling that day...
OR these new polo shirts are being rolled out to more units...?

A lot of lads in Traffic wear the bike polo necks when on nights/lates. A lot warmer this time of year.

Would it be fair to say cheapest as opposed to practical is the main consideration when purchasing equiptment?

Believe we're been issued with new gear in Sept...AGS..Same stuff as
before , fleece, raingear shirts...all the stuff you have already...and was there not talk of a points system like the way the NYPD operate..
Was it not started in some DMR stations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 mcfrizzles93

The polo shirts that people have been seeing are given to specialised units like, scenes of crime, public order, detectives, Guards on motorbikes for under they're leathers, drugs, etc.

Shirts trousers and fleece - stuff i didn't need... and not a sniff about them updating the uniform... massive shame cos as has been said it actually wouldn't cost much to make a huge difference... hadn't heard any DMR stations trialling points, its not the kind of thing that can be trialled in one station, cos whether it's better or worse, members in station A will give out that members in station B have it easier...

I know the DFB use the points system, it definitely makes sense, if you don't need new shirts or trousers but you do need new boots or a new cap, you pick what you need and what you don't need, anything beyond your points allowance is taken from pay as far as i know, so the messy mule that needs a whole new kit foots the bill and the lad that looks after his stuff doesn't...

AFAIK issue of replacement gear for soiled/ damaged uniform stays the same, no points required just a report and replacement
