Same situation with me. I just called the DADC guys in the UK and they said to return it to the HMV store I bought it in with proof of purchase for a replacement. He told me that it was up to HMV whether to change it if I don't have a receipt, and that he could not supply a replacement if they refused. Now to find the receipt...

i read on some other site (cant remember where) that the new boxset and the old can be told apart from one another, due to differences on the cover. Anyone have a link or info on this, if i go into HMV to buy this, i9 want to be sure i have the fixed version.

the fixed version has the starfleet insignia in red at the top of the spine of th sleeve insert and the spine of the case itself. the original version doesnt. the starfleet insignia also appears on the discs themselves in the fixed version, whereas the original didnt have it.

    from tng.trekcore.com

CBS have today announced an official release date for the sophomore season of Star Trek: The Next Generation on blu-ray. The 5-disc set is due for release on December 4 in the U.S. and Canadian markets (December 10th UK & Irl) Furthermore, an initial outline of bonus features has also been published to give fans an idea of what's to come on the set:

    Episodic Promos
    Gag Reel
Audio Commentary on "Q Who" with Dan Curry, Rob Bowman and Mike Okuda
Audio Commentary on "The Measure of a Man" with Melinda Snodgrass, Robert Scheerer and Mike Okuda
Featurette: Reunification: 25 Years After The Next Generation (HD)
The Measure of a Man (HD Extended Version)
Featurette: Making It So: Continuing The Next Generation (HD)
All SD features originally included on the DVD release

CBS should be releasing a more detailed breakdown of these features in due course. Be prepared for some amazing surprises in the Season 2 set... whilst we can't publish any of the details just yet, I assure you that the TNG-R Season 2 Blu-Rays could quite easily go down in Trek history as the BEST Star Trek home entertainment release ever produced. Watch this space!

thats quite a claim theyre making! The BEST Star Trek home entertainment release ever produced?

what could possibly be in the special features that they havent mentioned already that will make this release such a stellar edition to our collections??

mabye its a sneak peak at a trailer for Abrams Star Trek sequel??

mabye information on other possible extended episodes coming up in future seasons?

at this point it could be absolutely anything!

at this point it could be absolutely anything!

It's been narrowed down a very small bit.

It's not an unseen episode (I think that would have been the ultimate, but there's no such thing).
It's not more extended cuts like Measure of a Man.
It's definitely TNG, so not Abrams stuff.
It seems the Bluray will have footage from Star Trek: Phase II, but this probably isn't the amazing surprise hinted at.
It's "a great collection of original never-before-seen content from 1988 to the present day". (The present day stuff is new interviews)

TrekCore are publishing an interview with CBS Digital this week which will contain more hints.

    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/10032012_muldaur.html

One of the long-standing questions relating to the bonus material on the upcoming Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 2 blu-rays is whether or not a new interview with Diana Muldaur (Dr. Katherine Pulaski in the second season) will be included. After months of speculation, Robert Meyer Burnett has revealed that he'll be interviewing Muldaur today for the Season 2 bonus features. In a series of messages on his Twitter feed, Burnett states:
"It's really [a] great pleasure to meet you, Diana."
"Interviewing Kate Pulaski! (@ CBS Television City Studios)"
This is truly wonderful news. We know that CBS and Robert Meyer Burnett have been trying their upmost to secure an interview with Muldaur for several months, so their success will undoubtedly delight fans. Muldaur has been notoriously outspoken about her time on TNG, often stating that it was an unhappy period of her acting career. Additionally she has been somewhat illusive when talking about Star Trek, only recently starting to attend the large conventions.
Muldaur's interview is expected to be intercut with interviews with the principal cast and form the bulk of the main documentary on the Season 2 blu-rays

Watched a bit of Encounter at Farpoint this morning, Blu Ray. Oh. My. God. It looks absolutely astonishingly good, what a job they've done on it. It's like watching a different show at times  And the Enterprise D remastered in hi-def...well, its basically porn.

I'm so very tempted. I think I'm going to get TOS on Blu first though. I think.

So, full details of TNG special features of season two have finally been unveiled.... brand new never before seen deleted scenes in HD! Gag reel in HD! and all the other stuff perviously mentioned. I cant wait to get this. I just hope it doesnt suffer from the problems that plagued the season one release!

    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/31102012_s2pressrelease.html

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (October 31, 2012) - The journey to new frontiers continues in spectacular high definition as the legendary series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION - THE SECOND SEASON arrives on Blu-ray Disc December 4 from CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution.

Adding to the exclusivity and collectability of the Blu-ray release is an HD, "Extended Cut" of "The Measure of a Man," which includes deleted scenes and different angles from the broadcast version. The original version of the episode is included, as well as a "Hybrid Extended Cut," combining the high-definition on-air version of "The Measure of a Man" with video of the extra material taken from an early VHS rough-cut of the episode that was in the writer's (Melinda Snodgrass) archives.

The spectacular collection boasts a must-see reunion of the cast, who were brought together earlier this year in Calgary in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the series. Produced exclusively for the series' Blu-ray, this never-before-seen reunion roundtable chat features all of the best known cast regulars, joining together for the first time in years to tape a discussion about the legacy of the series, including Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T. Riker, LeVar Burton (Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lt. Commander Data), Michael Dorn (Lieutenant Worf), Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher) and Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher).

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION - THE SECOND SEASON also includes over 120 minutes of brand-new special features, including a two-part, in-depth documentary on the making of Season 2 entitled "Making It So: Continuing Star Trek: The Next Generation" - Strange New Worlds (Part 1), and New Life and New Civilizations (Part 2), and a gag reel that was created from newly recovered 35mm film elements and transferred for the very first time to high-definition.

Audio Commentary on episode "Q Who?" with Rob Bowman, Dan Curry and Mike Okuda
Brand new Deleted Scenes from two episodes, "The Icarus Factor" and "Up the Long Ladder"

    Lads, Im GUTTED!

Check out these stills for season 2 remastered. Apparently CBS outsourced the remastering process for season 2 and werent happy with it so brought it back inhouse for season 3. BUt the damage has been done. A LOT OF THE SFX SHOTS LOOK SO FAKE, EVEN THE ENTERPRISE. CLICK ON THE PICS FOR LARGER IMAGES.

For those who have seen the first season in HD on blu ray - they will be able to tell straight away that there has been a drop in quality. GUTTED!

    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/15112012_ssn2stills3.html

To see what im talking about look at the remastered all the pics where the enterprise is shooting at the borg cube. the enterprise looks worse than something you would see in a ps3 game!

a lot of the other stock shots lack the attention and care s 1 recieved too. some of the other enterprise shots look too crisp and sharp.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,259 ✭✭✭downwithpeace

It is a little sharp but stills might not reflect the same quality as the actual video but we'll see.
I never really thought about the work put in to that Cube before, it looks completely like a model now but the detail the model makers added is amazing.

I have to say I'm worried. Enterprise looks very fake in many if those shots. Time wil tell what it looks like on a native hd screen. Why they outsourced the work on second season is a mystery.

which looks better? (and more faithful to the original and like season 1 remastered)

    This: http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/cbs_dauphindaled4_hd.jpg

    Or this:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v118/horrid/cbs_dauphindaled4_hd.jpg

The first is a finished version that the outsourced company made for second season.

the second is what a fan who posted on trekcore did to that image in his spare time, and he's just an amatuer.

    --

    enterprise looks so fake here.
borg cube is so obviously a model.
    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/cbs_qwhoentfires2_hd.jpg

    --

look at the starfield background in all 3 of these pics. notice anything? the background is the same in all 3. even tho its from different angles.

    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/cbs_qwhocube1_hd.jpg

    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/cbs_qwhoentfires_hd.jpg

    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/cbs_qwhoentfires2_hd.jpg

The attention to detail from season 1 is severly lacking here and ALL because CBS outsourced so they could get the season out faster. not acceptable in my opinion. ill wait to pass final judgement until its released but trekcore are saying that these are FINAL stills from the finished print and not prelimiary for the purpose of advertisement.

major sadface cause season 1 is so stellar

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

Admittedly, the Enterprise looks terrible in those scenes its firing on the Cube. It looks like something out of a video game, agree. BUT, if you look at the dvd version of the episode, the source material they had to work with is far from good, the effects in the episode are & were sketchy at best.

I know they did a fine job with Season 1, but perhaps most of the effects shots were simply recycled in that season. The effects shots in the pictured episode, were perhaps new at the time, & weren't done great to begin with?

I dunno, they obviously did it to save $$$ but its a crying shame they let them go ahead with the full season if thats gonna be the outcome.

time will tell what the finished product looks like, but it already looks like one of my fave episodes (Q who) hasnt been given the treatment it deserves!

not to mention that the FX company for S2 came up with this as their best:

    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/cbs_dauphindaled4_hd.jpg

while an amateur in his spare time did this with the same shot:

    THAT WORRIES ME!

    time will tell......

Hmm, the companies one just looks upscaled really, nowhere near as jaw dropping as S1 :(

The fan made one, is that simply a pic he touched up? Or a moving image/sequence?

TrekCore have gotten their hands on the second season blu-ray a week early. They gave it 4/5 stars. Stating that its a mixed bag when comparing it to Season 1, but that it still blows the SD version out of the water.

I just hope Seasons 3-7 remain CONSISTENT and aren't rushed to meet a release deadline. I, for one would prefer to wait an extra couple of months rather than be left with a sub par product.

LOts of stills on Trekcore show how the quality in many of the compositing shots for SFX have dropped. Oh well, its better than the DVD so thats something I suppose....

It's kind of funny, in a not so funny way, that Season 1 had the well documented screw up on sound and now Season 2 is going to have overly viewable model ships.

Edit: My Blu-Rays came today :)
