A few days ago I noticed this that the icons in the top left of all of my windows are like this(see first picture), which means I need an update. Also if you refer to my second picture, you'll see that colours aren't blending together properly in images.

So it's obvious that I need an update. Usually I'm alerted to this.. but haven't been for almost a week now. What do you guys think I need? Besides a clue :o

I think I'm confused by those screenshots

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,292 ✭✭✭TangyZizzle

    You think? :)

Usually the icons in the top left of all windows are joined together, in the first screen shot they are seperated.

The second shot is of grass on a football pitch. Can you see that the colours aren't blending? The difference in one shade of green is very evident in comparison to the next.

looks like you need a graphics driver update...what graphics card or integrated one are you using ?.

right click computer scroll down to properties left click that then left click device manager then left click the arrow beside display adapters. what does it say. a bit more info would help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,292 ✭✭✭TangyZizzle

Nothing there that says display drivers, but there is one that says Display adapters. When I click the arrow beside that it says - NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430

yeah thats the one, sorry I made a typo on that. display adapters is correct.

can you give another detailed picture just to be sure, them two clips are not enough to go on to be absolutely sure.

Yeah, sure. Just give me a minute.

ok. I checked on that graphics driver NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 and a lot of people were having problems with the monitor resolution after upgrading the driver so will leave that for the time being.

There's a very good example of the problem I'm seeing. Sorry for the wait.

You should have an option to roll back driver on your graphics.
other possible cause would be that you plugged your computer into a diffrient monitor or TV which changed its display resolution and you may have to change it back manually.

The computer's never been plugged into anything but this monitor since it was originally bought, so we can rule that out.

So what solution do you guys see as being worth giving a try? when you say 'roll back' do you mean return to a previous version of the driver? If so, how do I do that?

System restore?:) and oh man way too many toolbars there, always do a custom install, the only thing diffrient is you get to uncheck installation of bloatware like them.

i am not running W7 as you appear to be but Graphics always gave an option to roll back driver on XP and Vista by right clicking on a blank spot on desktop and selecting properties.
do not do anything drastic this is not a hugh problem, just an annoying one!:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭zenno

also as above poster said right click on a blank part of your desktop and left click screen resolution then make sure the resolution is on recommended.

going by that new picture it just looks like a resolution problem as if the resolution is a bit lower than the recommended one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,292 ✭✭✭TangyZizzle

Hangon - what toolbars are you referring to?

    I'm using Vista :)

When I right click on my desktop, I don't get an option to alter my screen resolution.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭zenno

well your using firefox so if the resolution is set right and ok, maybe you could try a different firefox theme and then change back to the one you have now just to see does the change clear it up.. i have noticed as well that when i installed the latest firefox browser the top part looked a bit messed up but i went back to an earlier firefox browser and it was all ok then. probably not related but just a thought.

I'm not using Firefox. I'm using Google Chrome

    ok try this. in vista...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,292 ✭✭✭TangyZizzle

It's nothing to do with resolution. I've been through all of the options as shown above and the problem hasn't been solved.

Also a system restore would be pointless as the furthest back I can go is 5 days, which is prior to when these problems showed up.

So have you tried sliding the bar on the screen resolution option at the bottom?
sorry thought that some items on the taskbar were radio station bloatware.
you are not using a virtual hard drive such as oracles are you?if you are you have to add its add-ins to get full screen.
Oh and if system restore will only go back five days then your registry has been interfered with,do you use CCleaner or similiar?or did you use windows disk cleaner to delete the other possible restore points?

    right.

ok try this. right click computer then scroll down and click properties then left click device manager then click the arrow on display adapters and right click this NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 then left click uninstall. a box will pop up but DO NOT check the box that says delete the driver software for this device just make sure the box is unchecked and click ok. when you do this restart the computer and give it a few minutes for it to reinstall the device and see if that works.

Hangon - I tried it. No no, that was my iTunes I think. No, no virtual hard drives. The reason the system restore won't go back any further than 5 days is because I uninstalled some little things over the course of the week.

Zenno - I've restarted the computer to see if that roll back from earlier has any affect. I won't be on the computer again until tomorrow, so I'll report back on here when I see how it's gone.

Did you update Google Chrome five days ago?

Does this problem only happen in Chrome?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,292 ✭✭✭TangyZizzle

I don't believe that I updated Chrome, no. I'm not sure if it happens in any other browsers, I didn't think of checking. I'll do that first thing in the morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,381 ✭✭✭✭Allyall

New chrome is causing some problems for people..
They are talking about giving it a complete makeover. It may be the cause of some of your problems.

(Not the makeover it just got. A rebuild, without any embedded extras)

Yeah as you probably guessed my boards updates are happening very slowly.
please do let us know how you get on and what the problem was!

    g'nite. Tangy and Zenno!:)

well if nothing else works try the uninstall of the device as I have mentioned above, tomorrow and that will at least tell you if the graphics driver or device was the problem.

Nothing suggested on this thread's worked thus far. However, a HP Update has just appeared and upon letting it run I've noticed that one of the three updates it's going to install is an NVIDIA Graphics Driver Update.

Hopefully this resolves my little issue.

well if the graphics driver update didn't work then I can only assume the problem lies with Google chrome or the graphics card itself.

Didn't Mammy zenno ever tell you the dangers of assumption? :)

This is a problem I'm encountering in all aspects of the computer. not just in google chrome.

The HP update of NVIDIA did nothing :/

ok that makes you're point more clearer.

I was sure the problem related to the graphics card or driver. I will look into it a bit more and see if I can troubleshoot it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭zenno

just try this... it's a long shot but try it and see if it changes anything...

click the windows button and click control panel on the right. when in control panel look for and left click "SYSTEM".

when that opens then on your top left screen left click advanced system settings. when the box opens left click "advanced" up the top. then left click settings on the right side of where it says performance and make sure it is set to "let windows choose whats best for my computer. if this is already checked then click adjust for best appearance and click apply/ok and see if that does anything to affect the problem you are having if not go back and click let windows choose whats best for my computer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,292 ✭✭✭TangyZizzle

That didn't affect the problem, zenno.

Just to clarify, I am grateful for the help you're offering and have tried everything that's been mentioned thus far.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 374 ✭✭hangon

Hi again Tangy.this may or not apply to you but sounds like the same problem that was resolved, best of luck and i hope you have not pulled out all your hair yet!:)

and if that dosen't work you can try this to fix corrupt icons. this will work for corruptions within the icons and other things relating to your problem. hopefully. for vista/win 7/xp

hope one of them helps for you. if not we'll troubleshoot with something else. just make sure you restart the computer after removing the cache. don't worry it won't remove any icons, it will just clean the icon cache list up.

    Sssssorted!

I found the NVIDIA Control Panel and opened it. I played around with a few features but I think what did the trick was upping the Colour Quality which was set to the lowest mark.

Thanks for all the help and tips.

I think I've still got enough hair to pull off a half convincing comb over :o
