Where would one pickup 12mm spikes

I got mine in Sportsworld in Terenure, 2 or 3 quid.

or are they really necessary? What kind of conditions would you use various spike lengths for? Also, if you fit a shorter spike, could you use them on a track, or are XC shoes specific to XC-like terrain?

No idea. But I'm interested to hear from people who might know!

    !).

They came with 6mm spikes. Where would one pickup 12mm spikes, or are they really necessary? What kind of conditions would you use various spike lengths for? Also, if you fit a shorter spike, could you use them on a track, or are XC shoes specific to XC-like terrain?

    Hey Krusty-

I have always found the 6mm spikes good for most conditions- we would only put the 12mm "daggers" in if the course was gonna be completely soft (i.e. wet grass/ mud the whole way as any time spend with the long spikes on hard surfaces can be pretty uncomfortable.

The difference between cross spikes and track ones is just support and substance- don't know if you've ever worn proper sprint spikes but they have very little in the heel- I think cross spikes are fine for a 5000 or 10000 meter situation on the track as they provide some cushion in the heel....

Hi Folks, have my spikes now, and have done a few runs with them to get used to 'em and they fit like a glove (but look bloody awful. Still trying to muddy them up!).

9mm or 12mm for XC is usually fine but I've used 6mm on dryer courses with no problems. The difference between XC and middle or long distance track spikes is the sole is smoother on the track spike and there may be a tiny bit more cushioning on the track spike. But I'd say you could use the XC spikes on a track with 5mm(i think) nibs with no problems.

The tracks probably have a sign up saying some sign about maximum spike to be 5mm pyramid ones.

For the cross country it depends on the weather the week before hand, if there were other races on before yours that will have already churned up the course and if they happen to be sending you through rivers or things like that.

6mm would be OK if it's been dry, 9mm if it's been wet during the week and your the last race of the day around a course of multiple laps, 12mm if your running through rivers and there has been reports of flooding on the news.
