Throughout history men have always created personal spaces where they retreat to be amongst friends. Lately, these places, called "man caves", has become a boom industry, with often more than $50,000 (£31,772) being spent on furnishing a single "cave".

Do you have a space in the house/garden shed where you can "have it your way" without the missus or kids cramping your style, I used to but it's since been invaded  :( .

Must start converting the garage. ;)

    Man Cave - what a title.:D

Yet contradictory, surely a man can be man wherever he wants? Retreating to a cave is not manly.

Don't have one in the ma's house, but I would consider my bedroom to be my mancave or my room in college

I know a lad who has the garage converted into a home cinema/gaming room. It even has a fridge for snacks/beer.

The garage usually does the job, needs a mini fridge though.

I can see why guys like their man caves but I think everyone should have a place they can go to to get away from it all-family, kids, work...

Virginia Woolf said a woman should have 'money and a room of one's own'.
    Sounds good to me.

Yip, I have one... but for some reason a clothes horse mysteriously appears in there every so often

    Master of the Universe

I had one on my old apartment. An entire room dedicated to videogames. Had everything from 8 bit consoles/machines right through up to the ps2 era. Even had space for my massive Steel Battalion controller to be set up. Wall full of videogames. Was trying to sort out moving my arcade machine in too.

It was the most awesome thing ever.

    Then we moved :(

I read this first as "Do you have a space in the house/garden shed where you can "have your way" with the missus" :D

I was thinking what the fúck is wrong with your bedroom, and who or what invaded it?

But alas, no i don't have a man cave, unless you count my car, which seems to be the only time im ever alone - does my head in sometimes. I likes a bit of alone time, so i does. I need one of these caves!

Looking at some of those "man cave" shots make me belief house interiors would be so much more interesting and attractive if men were the driving design forces than women.

I seriously WANT some of those rooms

The sickening thing is how much space Americans have in their homes. Most of those caves are bigger than 2 bed apartments in Ireland. And while a few of those caves are clearly owned by millionaires, I would say the majority of them are owned by blue collar workers.

Oh yeah, American houses are simply huge. We would think that middle class guys are millionaires because to us their houses are mansions.

The concept of a 'man cave' is not a man's creation. It was concocted in the vapid broth of The View or some other 'women, doin' ih fo' theyselves' type drek vehicle.

Most normal men would call it a room or the spare room.

Man Cave, what a total load of codswallop.

They just look like tacky American pubs.

Women... what? How did women come up with the idea of men having their own playrooms?

Because men would call it the spare room and then put their stuff in said room. Man Cave, get back in yer box, Whoopi Goldberg.

It is not just a man thing, everyone needs a place they can go to have "me time". The more people you live with in terms of partner(s) or Child(ren) the more one needs this and I highly recommend it.

As much as I love my girlfriends I find I have been investing myself in quite a lot of DIY projects or varying degrees of pure insanity in order to have my "me time" away from them but for many simple having a games room with an XBox or reading the paper on the toilet for an hour is enough.

A vagina is the only man cave we men need.

Yeah, but trying to fit a 42" TV & console or invite a bunch of friends round for a game of poker in there could get awkward.

yeah, a cave should at the minimum have a recliner, a 50inch plasma tv, a bar, a poker table and a pool table

After reading a bit of this tread I started getting excited and very imaginative mind you, about what I could do with my 10x12 shed..then I clicked the link, utter utter depression, sadness and wtf have I done with my life kicked in. So it's back to my own man cave, the toilet under the stairs. *weep's like a child

I dont get it, a lot of those spaces dont even fit some of the basic requirements of a "Man space":
    271126_10150244981314500_77860674499_7016464_3797247_n.jpg

    That ones a kitchen!!

    270352_10150240002814500_77860674499_6963031_806311_n.jpg

    This is a BEDROOM?!

    269772_10150251319289500_77860674499_7074092_7367909_n.jpg

    This isnt even indoors?!

But i have to say, some take the CAVE part of it and make it something special:

I have a man cave for hifi purposes, and I spent stupid amounts of money on stuff for it back in the glory days. I hardly ever set foot in it now. It taunts me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,969 ✭✭✭hardCopy

My fantasy house will contain a massive basement complete with micro-brewery and bar, with obligatory flatscreen TV of course.

This will no doubt have to be offset with a designer kitchen and walk-in wardrobe for herself.

We can share the gym in the attic.

Is this what the modern western man has to look forward to now? Relegated to tinker away with your train sets in some shed while your wife has the whole house to do with as she wishes? I hope I'm never in a marriage like that.
