Facetime or Facepalm?

    I don't have an iPhone, I don't like Apple & I can't stand Steve Jobs.

Even more so, I can't stand his devoted followers - the Apple-ites who seem more fanatic than most religious fanatics.

I don't get it - a computer is a ****ing computer. That's all it is. It's not a lifestyle choice & it doesn't define you as a person. The same goes for phones. They are only phones after all.

Now they have "facetime". It makes me facepalm when I see the ads.

So how do you feel about Apple..? Or do you even care?:D

Facetime advert makes me facepalm. It's such a cringeworthy ad, that Steve quit his own surname to hide from it all.

    Facepalm of these proportions

I do have some apple stuff but I have serious hatin' for the apple junkies.

It's just a fucking white coloured product you stupid brand whores, it tends to have zero professional respect amongst the likes of designers and I.T. professionals, and buying a symbol does not automatically make you cool.

After spending about €1,300 on such a product whose actual benefits I could have achieved for half that price, I feel utterly demeaned and cheated, by myself. It's a waste of fucking time, try not to buy into it.

Charlie Brooker did a volte face with regard to his hatred of Mac users but still excoriates Apple for their creepy control freakery.
iTunes – a hideous binary turd that transforms the sparkling world of music and entertainment into a stark, unintuitive spreadsheet.

Apple's "sync" bull**** is a deception, which pretends to be making your life easier, when it's actually all about wresting control from you. If you could freely transfer any file you wanted onto your gadget, Apple might conceivably lose out on a few molecules of gold. So rather than risk that, they'll choose – every single time – to restrict your options, without so much as blinking.

Sure, you can get around the irritating sync-issue, but doing so requires a degree of faff and brainwork, like solving the famous logic problem about ferrying a load of foxes and chickens across a river without it all ending in feathers and death. And even if you find it easy, it's a problem Apple don't want you to solve. They want you to give up and go back to dumbly stroking that shiny screen, pausing intermittently to wipe the drool from your chin.

I would like to own a Mac Pro because they're really well built systems and OSX is a better operating system than windows. There's a reason why most pros in the film, photo and music industry use Mac Pros. The only problem is they're mighty expensive. You're looking at least 4 grand for a decent machine. For that much price you could get a very very powerful windows PC. But then if money is no issue and productivity time is of the most importance, I'ld pick the Mac Pro despite it being almost twice as expensive as a similarly speced PC.

But until I get to a level where productivity time matters to me more than financial costs, I'll stick with windows...

Saying that I do not appreciate people who endorse apple products cuz they think it makes them look cool. Its a good productivity machine, I'll grant it that but if you think it makes you look cool, then you're just a douchey hipster!

I don't like Apple. But to be fair it's not their fault. I mean, mp3 players are around fucking years, then Apple bring out the i-pod and everyone is all 'wow, Apple are such innovators!!111one11!!' So that's not Apples fault, it's the idiots that love them. Then Microsoft guy invents the tablet computer in like 2003 or something, it's well liked but doesn't take off. Then Apple bring out the i-pad 5 years later and all the fanboys are like "wow, Apple are such innovators!!111one111eleventy11!' even though they are nothing of the sort.

Now Apple are a very good marketing company. That's what they do, they are good at marketing, and fair play, go for it. Respect where respect is due. But please stop pretending they invent things. Please stop pretending they have even a shred of ingenuity in their bland copy pasta souls. Cheers.

I dunno about overpriced, I think it's worth spending a grand on a computer that you'll have for years. My dad still has a perfectly functioning G3.

Also I should add the Mac Pro is the only Apple product I'ld like to own. I really despise the way Apple rips off people on their cheaper lower end products such as the macbooks. Also despise the way how apple builds their products to only last a certain time. For example the battery on the macbook dies after a couple of years and you're forced to buy a new battery from Apple to use your macbook as a laptop. Another thing they'll allow the systems to run toasty hot. The cpu temps on the macbooks (don't know about the pros) easily go over 80c under load. This is why most macbooks become slow worthless junk in a few years time. Similar stuff happens with their ipod and iphones.

I can say all of this because I used to own a macbook (actually still do) until its battery died in year 2 of its life and then it became a super slow sluggish piece of junk in about 3-4 years time.

Also own an iPhone 3Gs which over the years have become increasingly slow and sluggish.

Granted windows PCs become the same after a few years of use too (unless you build your own with quality parts and decent cooling and know know to look after it, which is another thing I despise about apple how they won't let you "build and upgrade your own mac" like you can build and upgrade a PC), but PCs don't cost a million billion like macs do. And so you end up paying almost twice as much for a mac which only lasts half as long as a similarly priced PC so that after your pricey mac dies, you are forced to buy the new model which they inevitably release every couple of years in case of their computers and every year in case of their iPods, iPhones etc.

And this is why I dislike Apple quite a lot...

Still after saying that PCs have their flaws too in the heap of junk that the Windows operating system is. The windows 7 is good but if only Microsoft could engineer windows upto OSX standards, it would be sooooo much better than rip off Apples!!

    Bottom line:

    PC:
Pros - Cheap, can build your own with good parts, if you know what you're doing, will last you a long time.
Cons - Windows is still far from ideal as an OS. Lots of bugs and lots of maintenance work with virus and stuff. Still you can always make backups and reformat your system to make it run like new.

    Macs:
Pros - OSX is a really good and smooth OS. Less worries about viruses, driver updates and compatibility etc. Less maintenance work and less hassle to work.
Cons - Mighty expensive. Can't upgrade. Will become useless in a few years forcing you to buy the new model.

Where do you people get the idea that OS X is any good, its terribly unintuitive, lacks many features that are basic to all other OSes. Try to cut and paste a file in OSX... wait nope, you have to copy then paste then delete the old one.

I've used OSX for about the past 4 years. Since my macbook became useless earlier this year, I've been using windows. Once you get used to OSX, you really come to appreciate how much smoother the workflow is to windows. Also you get less crashes, I never had to install a anti-virus or a firewall on my macbook, although I did need to reformat it a few times in its later years as it got slower. Still I prefer OSX workflow to windows. Its smoother and faster.

I recently built a windows 7 PC and I like windows 7. Its not as bad as Vista was. Still need to worry about anti-viruses and firewalls and driver updates and all of that. Still its a good build and I hope it last for atleast the next 2-3 years without needing me to upgrade any parts.

I havent had a computer crash that wasnt purely the cause of a program since i was using windows 95. I went for about 2 years with no anti virus and never had a problem with XP. Its also pretty stupid to think you dont need an anti-virus or firewall on an OSX system, there are plenty of viruses for OSX and even more security holes in the OS itself because apple refuses to acknowledge them and just says "hurr duur OSX has no viruses lol"

Computers arent about "which is best", its about "which is best for me, now".

Right now, I'm using Linux on my netbook, because I wanted to check my emails/facebook/boards before going to bed. Linux boots up fast, and all I need is the browser. Tomorrow, I'll turn on my PC, and will use Windows to play a game, because Windows does games better.

Its ignorant to decide that one platform trumps another. Competition breeds innovation. If OSX wasn't any good, Windows wouldn't be what it is today, and vice versa.

As far as Facetime is concerned, I don't see your point. Apple have a video calling service and want you to use it. Just like Skype, Windows Live Messenger, and all the rest.

Well I have a laptop with better specs AND a grand left over for a holiday. You hipster waster.

The products Apple produce aren't special. Techy people tend to use Android and Linux, so having a Mac doesn't make you smart. More coders probably use Windows, to be honest (dot NET goodness).

    It's overpriced middle-of-the-range tat.

    What?

Android and Windows (Especially 7) are two top class OSes. Not only that but they are two far more robust operating systems in comparison to Apple's offerings.

Anyway, I don't really like Apple. They don't make bad products, in fact I have to admit they make fairly good products. The problem though is said products are nowhere near good enough to justify their premium pricing. It's all just terrible value and overly expensive for what are almost always inferior products.

Apple is cool be it propaganda or a straight up fact YO!

Whenever i sit down at my iMac and look at it i think yo you have been deigned to the nth degree, whenever i power it up I'm like Whoa that was quick, whenever the desktop boots I'm like this is fancy, when ever i option+space and search an app I'm like super fast, whenever i switch desktops using command+arrow I'm like organisation rocks, whenever 6 months rolls by and i say its time for a reformat i stop and say wait this aint necessary, whenever it doesn't get a virus i look at myself in the mirror and say to my self its either you or the computer.

Overall i'm not a fan boy i just like quality i fix computers daily and the engineering just doesn't compare to anything else that i get daily.

I think a well engineered great looking design will inspire great engineering and great design, i think fan boys call it a lifestyle choice is because well it inspires inspiration that your normal 1300 windows PC doesn't.

Untrue. The concept of the tablet computer was around for decades(the Dynabook). "Microsoft guy" didn't invent the tablet computer in 2003. Not even close The first tablet computer brought to market? The apple newton in 1993. How people interacted with PC's was kinda set by the mid 80's. You had the command line interface(DOS and such) and the GUI(invented by Xerox PARC but brought to market and improved by Apple in 1983/84). The newton was an attempt to change that interaction. A bit too early an attempt for it to work well. They ran before they could crawl. The very last newtons though were pretty good. Even the handwriting recognition worked.
Now Apple are a very good marketing company. That's what they do, they are good at marketing, and fair play, go for it. Respect where respect is due. But please stop pretending they invent things. Please stop pretending they have even a shred of ingenuity in their bland copy pasta souls. Cheers.
Yep they are a good marketing company. No doubt about that, but they're also innovators and have been for decades. First successful GUI driven pc (the original Macintosh). It had plug and play printing, font management, reliable file dating, plug and play networking, desktop publishing(they got Adobe off the ground as a commercial prospect), WYSIWYG and a host of other innovations all in one package. In 1984. Multimedia computers? Apple invented that. If I was to list the GUI/OS innovations that apple brought to market we'd be here all day. Microsoft themselves acknowledged this through the years. They used to joke and call apple "the southern R&D dept" for a reason.

Laptops? If you're using one to post on this thread, it's design and functionality was overwhelmingly driven by apple products. The first laptop with the keyboard near the screen and mouse device with palmrests? Powerbook 100, in 1993. First laptop with a trackpad? Powerbook 520 a year later(and brought out the first dockable laptop). I have a powerbook g3 from 1999 which still works. It has wireless, USB/Firewire, hot swappable drives/batteries can even load up two batteries(which still work BTW with 2 I can get 8 hours) trackpad, DVD drive and a load of other little features far ahead of PC offerings at the time. It was also much more future proof. It came with 64mbs of ram and a 6Gb hard drive, but it can take up to a gig of ram and 120bg hard drive. You could even swap out the CPU, but few companies took up the challenge. It runs OSx up to 10.4 and I'm using it to type this post. Not bad for a 12 year old laptop. Try that with a PC laptop of the same vintage. Actually I will say, they made better quality more long lasting products back then. Now they were mad money, but at least you could see where the money went. NOw it's much more about buying the new fashionable model. It's a business model that has served them well mind you. In 2000 Dell were laughing at them and Time and Newsweek had them going bust. Today apple could buy Dell lock stock and barrel with a few months net profit on their phones alone.
I agree macbooks are crap, though the battery dying off is not restricted to apple stuff. The earlier battery tech wasn't as powerful but didn't have such a limited shelf life. But yea macbooks are a bit crap alright. They eat hard drives too and the plastic chips off the edges.

Nope there are not "plenty of viruses" for OSX. There are a few malware apps out there, but with very few exceptions(only one I can think of) they require the user to install them. Security wise, apple and linux based systems are far more secure outa the box than MS products. Always have been.

Totally agree with that guardian Article - sums up my feelings for Apple perfectly. The products are a joy to use (I am typing this on my Macbook) until you want to do something that Apple don't want you to do.

Ever tried to use iMovie? if you want to get a picture into it for example you have to 'sync' your photos with iphoto..... the music has to come through itunes. No drag and drop.... no 'browse > insert file' simplicity that you get with windows.

It's the Apple way or the highway and it makes me want to discharge a firearm into steve jobbie jobbie job-head's face.

    Android phones are the shizz.

Why does everyone get so angry about someone else purchases? If they want to buy a Mac over a PC so what? Everyone that owns an Apple product probably already has an iTunes account so is already set up for FaceTime and they all come with the FaceTime software so its handier to use than Skype or whatever else there is.

Also the only people I ever see saying that Apple invented the iPhone or the iPod are the anti-Apple people trying to make a point that doesn't exist.

Live and let live, be grand.
