Dogs or Cats, which are better?

This argument seems to come up here pretty regularly. One of the big arguments of the dog advocates seems to be that cats will eat you if you die whereas dogs never will. Just wondering if the following article will change their minds?

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/abandoned-2-weeks-starving-dogs-indonesia-eat-owner-142541221.html

Just to add, I totally don't blame the dogs in this case.

    So why start another?

Some people like cats and not dogs.
Some people like dogs and not cats.
    Some people like both.
    Some people like neither.

    End of.

    There's no poll.

After 3 or 4 pages of discussion, how will we know for definite which is better with no poll?

Well I know Dogs are better, I was thinking of everyone else on the fence.

I say to settle the argument we chose one cat and one dog. We set them a series of tasks which will vary from obstacle courses to problem solving. In the end everyone learns to recognise their differences and get along.

I've heard of loads of cases where dogs eat their owners when they die.

There was a guy found half eaten by his alsation in the lane behind where I used to work years ago.

When you die, you lose your scent.
    You're just meat.
So I don't see the big hoo ha with an animal eating meat.
    They are animals after all.

Anyway, to answer the question - Cats are better.
    Dogs are too much work.
And they're too energetic and needy.
Cats will do their own thing, and will love you in a less co-dependent manner.
(Although all pets are co-dependent, but you know what I mean)

Cats can look after themselves, and tidy up after themselves, and their brains are closer to ours than dogs brains are.

Wait. This response was below even my low standards.

    I love both, but:

in terms of work - cats are better as they are more independent and don't need to be taken for walks etc..

dogs are more loyal - cats are opportunists

I have 2 cats, 2 dogs and 2 big fish... cats are easier to manage as pets.

Cats are pets? By that logic I have hundreds of pet birds. I see them a few times a year in the garden and I leave food for them now and then.

Unless the birds are coming in to your house and occasionally sitting on your lap and demanding food, they're not pets.

I love both, although it depends on the particular cat and the particular dog.

As Edith Wharton once remarked "a cat is a snake in furs". :D

    Dogs FTW... Woof!!!

    Dogs>Cats for sure.
Cats are nice and low maintenance though-if a little arrogant. I had an awesome cat...got another when he died and she was a right lil..well not bitch cuz thatd make the dogs v cats argument even more confusing but you know what I mean!

I was going to say something clever but I've forgotten what it was. Cat walking across keyboard on way to disconnect printer distracted me.

Cats are a lazy mans pet, which makes them better... the cat in my house is his own man, seriously, you dont even have to worry what will happen them after you die. they certainly don't.

Are you that insecure or lonely that you need a hyper dog to make you feel wanted?

I think a cats reaction can tell you pretty quickly what a person's personality is like.

Cats don't maul toddlers, so they're better.

My dog is not hyper, he sleeps for most of the day. He's the laziest dog you will never meet.

But thanks for your concern, have a cookie.

Cats aren't pets. They are wild animals that tolerate you for warmth and food.
They kill songbirds and their feces has horrible diseases.
They are like automatons there is no 'there' there.

    Cats should be banned.

    Cats have no personality.
    Cats are stupid.

Your cat doesn't give a darn about you.

    God I hate cats

Yeah they can, and sit in the crib on top of a baby.

Personally I love both but if I could only have one I would choose a dog.

I really don't get the hatred for cats that you hear, I mean it's the type of venom usually reserved for war criminals and Fianna Fail governments. The torture fantasies I've heard coming from seemingly rational people about what they would do to a cat are bonkers.

It's better to have a dog, because he'll eat the cat. Problem solved.

That depends on your cat ;)

I like both - but it depends on the individual pets I think.

My dogs are great for energy, exuberance and waggy tails, plus they make excellent burgular alarms and personal body guards, but they also excitedly punch me in the stomach roll is evil smelly, fox musk, eat my playstation controllers and occasionally puke up half digested socks/grass/unidentifiable crap.

My cat is fab for entertaining me (and the dogs) with crazy antics, being a hot water bottle when it's cold, and for being such a 'people-person' cat. But he also likes to surgically extract rodent organs and leave them on the floor for me to walk on, or to wrap mouse intestine around my windshield wipers or to rub himself up against my bare legs when he's soaking wet.

So, sometimes the dogs are better than the cat - and sometimes the cat reigns supreme. I couldn't decide.

My mate has seven cats, four outdoor and three indoor.

Each one of the indoor cats finds a bed for itself during the day. If this was my place each of the three would get a size 9 if they went near any of the beds.

Get a savannah cat. Looks like a cat, behaves like a dog - It's happy to see you, gives you attention like a dog and you can put it on a leash and bring it for walks, teach it to fetch etc etc!

Cats are for indoors types. Handy.
Dogs are for outdoors types. Hassle.
    That's it.

BTW Either pet doesn't care about bringing their own sh1te into the house, which I have a major phobia about. So no cats or dogs for me.

I grew up in a house with cats, and they have a tendency to drag their dirty bums all over the tables and counters, which my mam didn't give two sh1ts about, pardon the pun. :p

Oh yeah, cats are (I think) the only animal to carry Toxoplasmosis, which is actually harmful to us humans. Yikes.

Is this an irrational hatred, or did some cat hurt your feelings in the past?:D

But, to be fair, all faeces has potential for horrible deseases, cats, dogs and humans too. At least you never walk in cat poo.

Plus, they only catch the slow birdies... and the fast ones are so happy to be alive they sing all the more sweetly ;)

I like some cats and some dogs, not all of either though. I adopted a cat from the animal shelter recently but had to give him back as I didnt realise I'm allergic to cat hair, felt bad for the little guy but he got rehomed with a nice family so it worked out for him.
