DCUfm recruitment thread

Hey there, I'm Cian, the technical manager at DCUfm.
The DCUfm management team is revving up to build another awesome schedule of shows! Last year we won a rather overwhelming number of awards for every aspect of the station, and are of course part of Ireland's best college society, DCU Media Production Society (BICS 2011)

We have some rather huge plans for this year, and really want you to be part of them! If you are at all interested in the inner workings of radio, throw some questions at me here and I'll answer every one I can. We might also get some of the other staff members to join in. DCUfm doesn't do radio as a hobby, we do it for real, and this is going to be your best chance to get some serious experience in the broadcast field.

If you have an idea for a show that you think would rock, drop it in here and I'll help you build a proposal for it.

If you have heard that DCUfm is "only for communications students", that is utter crap. Neither the Manager nor the Assistant Manager this year are in the school of communications, and I'm in Multimedia.

If you don't feel comfortable in front of the microphone, we also need researchers, people to run the control desk and about a thousand other jobs need doing. Our award winning news and sports teams are two of the most active sections of the station, and the people you hear on-air are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to staff.

Yup! We have dedicated sports shows and have sports bulletins on the hour. Each of those require writers, researchers and, of course, people to be on the air. Very often, a single person does all that work, especially for the bulletins. The dedicated shows, however, have a rather large team who contribute, including people with specialization in various sports.

What sort of thing would you be interested in doing?

    When can I sign up?

Sign up on Clubs and Socs day, and then we'll send out an email with further information. We'll be running all sorts of workshops and such at the start of the year. Loads of chances to get involved. You DO need to be a fully paid (€4) member of the Media Production Society though. Which, by the way, is Ireland's Best Society. Did I mention that?

If you have a show proposal NOW though, throw it at us! I got involved with the station while I was still doing my Leaving, pitching two shows to the previous station manager.

As that is one of the most popular sports out there, I'm sure we can find something for you to do! There's always more games that need covering.

Join up, sure, and come take a gawk in at the studio on Clubs and Socs day. We will be pretty hard to miss, as we are at the entrence to the building in which the student bar is.

Yeah this sounds great! I'd hoped to do communications but didn't get it, hopefully I could still get involved in the radio side of it. If you don't already have a show like it, how about a weekly movie review with some music to go with each review?

Can I join an existing programme?

Do you have any sort of program focusing on any projects that students may be doing which are interesting, whether extra curricular or not? I think that'd be something nice

Can be in too?? Also, do you need experience? I have some broadcasting under my belt but I'm not great with the technical side of things.

Sounds interesting! We have one or two different shows which cover movies, but those are generally genre movies (sci-fi, fantasy). A few of the other shows have a short movie slot too.

A 30 min - 1 hour slot only on movies each week might be a bit tough to pull off, even with the music thrown in too. If you think you can do it though, or also could throw in some TV and other media chat, it sounds like the sort of thing which could make a very interesting proposal!

Sure! Some programs will be looking for people to join up. We'll know more about that once the semester starts.

A week, yea say? A few of the management will be wandring around the place, but we won't be back in ful swing until the semester starts up for sure. If you spot one of us (we'll likely be in the studio) come up and introduce yourself!

This is something that I've always wanted to do, and if you can come up with an interesting way to do it, it could be pretty great! There are so many excurricular activities going on around the campus, never mind personal projects run by students.
Can be in too?? Also, do you need experience? I have some broadcasting under my belt but I'm not great with the technical side of things.

No experience required! We'll be running all sorts of training sessions to get you up to speed. The vast majority of the people involved have had no past experience.
As for the technical side of things, it's actually quite easy, so long as you aren't in management and expected to be able to fix everything. ;)

Wooooooo sounds great! As I'vebeen told like a million times as a communications student you simply have to join dcufm :) I'd be quite interested in doing a bit of news maybe bita showbiz, interviewing that kinda jazz?:P I'd be well into my music too, a show playing new music from upcoming bands in dublin would be good, ye might already have something like that! bita a gig guide and that, id be well up for that :)

Thanks for the feedback! :) I think if the show covered about 3-4 movies per week in a 30 min slot with the added music and possible soundbites from the movies, the time could be filled. I'll work on the logistics and content of it before the sign up day anyway.

That Terry fella was great last year, should get him again.

Hey, my name's Cammie and I live in the states. I'm in my last year of high school right now. If I get accepted into DCU next year I want to study Multimedia. Would an accent be an issue if I were ever to broadcast?

Get working on a proposal! Later today I'll put up a post outlining what needs to be in one. It's sort of what it sounds like though.

Yup, I became a bit of a regular dropping into Terry's show. You may have heard me shouting something in the background every so often. It was pretty hilarious.

An accent wouldn't be an issue at all. Hopefully we'll see you next year!

I am really looking forward to joining this society and getting experience behind the scenes at a radio station. i had an idea for a show, i dont know if you do this already but how about something that discusses past and upcoming shows, concerts and festivals. playing music from bands that are due to play gigs the following week in dublin and possibly around the country, maybe even get some interviews.

Yo dude, I'm a movie nerd, if you need help with presenting and working with the proposal drop me a pm. I have ideas.

I have some experience working in local radio so am really interested in this. Would I have to work in one specific section of the station or can you do a variety of things (broadcasting, research, etc.) throughout the year?

Thanks, I'd love to do some interviews with bands and be a part of the more music related stuff. I take beginner radio broadcasting in my school right now so hopefully I get a little bit of experience by next year. Unrelated but is DCU a hard school to get into?

It's all about supply and demand over here. I'm not sure how it works for somebody in your position. Have you spoken to your Career Guidance teacher in your school about what you need to do to get accepted into a college in Ireland?

    well-well-well.jpg, this sounds interesting.
Would surely love to join in and do my part. I am pretty versatile, love writing, gathering info, talking to people, good at meeting deadlines.
So I guess see you on the Clubs and Socs day, gonna see if any of my skills are of use.

I'm going into Multimedia this year, mature student. I have always wanted to do something on the radio, I was going to get involved with near fm but I haven't got the time at the moment. I'm a club dj but always wanted to venture into radio.

I'll def be going this society and other related ones (music production,dj, radio etc)

Hey there! A lot of shows cover this kind of things already, generally in genres. For instance, one show, which is now part of RTE, I believe, talks about upcoming gigs for unsigned bands. Again, it's all about finding a niche! Come have a chat to us at some point.

You can do a variety. However, if you do start up a show we ask that you continue it for at least one semester so that our timetable doesn't get all messed up. If you get involved with the station you often find yourself helping out other shows, and just dropping by for chats when bored!
    EnoughOfThis.jpg this sounds interesting.

You are a club DJ, you say? Let's get you a late-night show! The current manager has his own late-night DJ show, so you'll have some competition. He rarely mixes live on air though, so you might be able to get the one-up on him on that. ;)
