Are people on the dole too entitled?

I was talking to a girl at my college a while ago and she was showing me houses and apartments on daft. She was saying she would like a nice new house or big apartment.

I asked her if she had a job as well and if she had saved up a lot to buy it. She replied that no, she does not work, but the government would pay for it. They already pay for her current apartment, monthly dole, college, and everything else. She then said she was probably going to drop out of college because she wanted to start having babies.

I was absolutely sickened by her attitude. Its not enough that taxpayers foot the bill for her to be handed a free ride, shes not happy with it and wants an upgrade. And to add insult on top, she let us pay for 2 years of her college, only to drop out so she can start popping out babies and get even more money off the government. It was all I could do to keep my mouth shut and not lay into her.

Why on earth should tax payers have to foot the bill for people like this? They just feel they are entitled to a free ride and have no plans to ever work or give back to society in any way. I honestly feel social benefits need a major reform in this country.

Your title should be "Is this girl I know too entitled?"

I couldn't possibly make a statement on all people on the dole just based on her.

Still, it's nice to see people on AH finally tackling the issue of people on the dole.

It's an important issue and has been the elephant in the room around here for far too long.

    :pac:

What about people who spent years paying in to the system? Are they not entitled to social welfare whould they find themselves out of work?

Types like the girl your mentioning should be clamped down on though. She was probably only in college to keep her welfare payments going. Now that she's going to have babies she'll have more payments to cover the loss.

    Lovely.

Yes, but you did keep your mouth shut...so to be honest you lost serious points.

Outraged enough to post a thread on boards bashing people on the dole but not outraged enough to actually take to task the one person you see to be abusing it.

Me thinks your story is bull****, if not you are a total puss puss.

There are absolutely people who deserve the benefits. And there are loads of people who abuse the system and milk it for all its worth.

And sorry for posting another dole thread. As someone who pays taxes, I was feeling pretty outraged by that situation, and I know quite a few more who are scamming the system.

The dole pays for her apartment?

    What rent does she pay?

There is a cap on the amount payable by rent allowance. And since she doesn't have kids then she's not getting any child benefit.

The government won't buy a house for her. They might contribute to her rent allowance but she won't be living in a brand new house that's bought specially for her as you would like us to believe.

You aslo cant keep your dole while getting a grant for college. I'm on the dole and looking to get to college (might aswell get an education rather than doin nothin and cant find work) and its no free ride. You get the allowance or a grant and neither are sufficient to cover everything. Without monies from elsewhere its almost impossible to do it.

is generous in contrast of the uk system op,but cost of living is higher here, and thanks to the last gov introducing the universal social charge,it has left some people financially better off staying on the dole, the fault is within the system and cost of living itself.

I think this girl was telling a few fibs here. Being on the dole is not something most people find that they want and if the could get off it they would and as for all these entitlements I think they are like fàs jobs plenty on paper but don't bother going looking for them.

And how would it be perceived as a racist issue? You would have been giving her **** for taking advantage of social welfare, not being from where ever she is from.

Deffo a bit of a wuss i'm afraid.

its quite possible she was, and i am not familiar with all the rules of what the gov will and wont provide. and its possible neither is she and it was just wishful thinking on her part.

Some parts of society do,the med card for example is quiet generous for education/health needs.

Thats rich you talking of ignorance after your OP. I've paid my taxed since I was 16. Why do you think I shouldnt go to college ? or get rent allowance ?

Your problem is you dont like that girls attitude. And because of that you dont want her or anyone else to have what they are entitled to. There are hundreds of thousand of people on the dole and you make up a bullshít story about a student dropping out of college as an example of where its all going wrong. Thats what I'd call ignorance.

Why ? Because thats what taxes are used for. Social benefits might need reform but not because you dont like how someone is living their life.

You should have said something to let her know what she was doing was reprehensible. Basically you've justified what she's doing by saying nothing if she meets no opposition to what's she's doing there's no reason why she wouldn't keep doing it.

    Stories aren't to be believed.

There's a million stories about de immigrants and de spongers that get free houses, free cars and free babies from the dole. But the facts of these cases are always relayed along the lines of "a friend's cousin works in the dole office and she said."

Nobody ever seems to be able to explain what benefit they're getting all these wonderous free things from.

Somebody sees a black guy in a car and he says he got a grant to buy it they automatically assume it was the dole. Chances are it was a Enterprise Grant because he was starting his own business.

    ok.

first, unlike you, i do not believe everyone is a liar, so when she told me the benefits she received, i believed her.

so she already has her house, but its no longer good enough for her.

second, the system was never set up so people could go their entire lives without working a minute. she may not be abusing the system to the letter of the law, but she sure is in spirit.

third, too many women in this country know all they have to do is spread their legs, pop out a baby, and say they dont know who the father is. is it any wonder so many young couples no longer get married?

I'm 26 now. From the age of 19 i was earning 30k+ and paying all of my taxes. Today i recieved my dole. €75 went to rent, €40 on food, €50 on my esb/bills. I've €23 to last me until next wednesday.

Don't be starting threads talking crap about this one girl you know who filled you with crap, and you didn't know anybetter to look into it before slating all of us on the dole.

WE are not over paid and milking it. SOME are milking the situation.

I think everyone is being a bit unfair on the OP. This girl told her that she wanted to have a baby so she was going to drop out of college- WTF?? Most normal people have babies when they can provide for them, not just because they feel like having them. Does her OH provide for them? Does she have an OH or does she plan on enlisting some unsuspecting donor?

It's not unheard of for people to return to education without informing SW of this so that they can keep their Jobseekers allowance either. NTM some of the unreal gaffs they're living in compared to the one bed flat I shared with my OH for the first couple of years of our proessional lives, or the hovels that alot of us would have shared with strangers as students.

It's not unheard of for people to return to education without informing SW of this so that they can keep their Jobseekers allowance either.

Social Welfare run checks 2 or 3 times a year with colleges. You cannot go back to college and keep your Jobseekers and get away it these days. You can however get a BTEA (Back to Education Allowance) through which you can attend college and receive dole payments for the duration of your time in college.
NTM some of the unreal gaffs they're living in compared to the one bed flat I shared with my OH for the first couple of years of our proessional lives, or the hovels that alot of us would have shared with strangers as students.

Unreal gaffs? Which ones are these? How do they afford them? Do they get unreal gaff allowance?

When I was on the dole the gaff I was renting was unreal alright but that was unreal because of the amount of stuff that went wrong with it.

Hey OP - did this girl tell you that the dole were going to buy the house for her?

So long story short she doesnt abuse the system, you just assumed she would get a brand new free house ( I assume the palace she's in now doesnt have room the the helicopter landing pad). And because you dont like how she is you just label her an abuser of the system even though you admit that she's not. But who are you to let the facts get in the way of anything ?

Then you make a ridiculous generalisation of women opening their legs (we all know women are all whores who'd do anything for a few quid) poppin a sprog out in order to claim some more benefits.

I don't disagree, but the fact that just the possibility of such an occurrence stifled your tongue and caused you the clam up and not express yourself makes you a wuss in my opinion.

Stand up for what you believe in OP, better to die like a lion than live like a sheep.

Can you give examples of when you confronted someone you don't know well over something they did?
