    Oh wait,
    no it's not...
It's just a lousy add-on to appease us fools who jumped on the 3DS bandwagon too early!
    3ds_attachment_scan.jpg
    http://www.qj.net/nintendo-3ds/news/3ds-second-analog-stick-is-real.html
I expect an almost simultaneous announcement of a major 3DS redesign including an integral extra Circle Pad and perhaps a new name.

So, names for the new console?

    3DS-finished properly
3DS- the real one this time
3DS- please buy one instead of the Vita

answers on a postcard to your nearest bin....

Feels like Ninty is doing a Sega on this handheld gen, it's like the 32X all over again.

What I'm trying to figure out is that if this is going to be a first party nintendo add on or just a cheap crappy 3rd party perhiperal bundled with Monster Hunter.

    Really hoping it's the latter!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭LookingFor

How long did the Virtua Boy last?

If Nintendo does announce a new system next week, 3DS will have been less than a year.

And as far as I'm concerned, a 3DS revision with new controls and new name = new system.

    3DS R.I.P.?

Now we know why they cut the price so much. It wasn't so much because sales weren't as good as they wanted but because they'll have a new €200+ dual-analog system coming soon.

Hmm..no confirmation it's actually first party....might be 3rd party and bundled with monster hunter just....

Also adds another shoulder button to each side.

Possibly 3rd party yeah, but why all the secrecy surrounding it if so? If anything a 3rd party house should be promoting it...& Nintendo's annoucement is soon...so its hard not to connect the two.

More bad PR for the 3DS, & if it isn't 1st party...what's stopping Nintendo denying it? If they gave a toss about the system there should be a small press release from them out there by now denying it's them making it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

how's that going to work when the plastics around the 2nd stick push your hand about 1/4" off the right hand shoulder? Unless they're just proxies for the existing shoulder buttons rather than secondary ones?

They could call it the 3DSDS / 3DS^2 where the 2nd DS stands for Dual Stick. Or perhaps the 3D3DS since it's Dual screen, Dual slide-pad, Dual shoulders. Awesome deluxe! I wonder what else we could have 2 of on the system? 2 Lids maybe, so if you flip the handset over you're playing an evil version of whatever game cart is in the slot?

Even with the add-on, its still pocket sized though.

Maybe it's like the classic controller pro situation...apparntly capcom had some input into it's creation, and it came bundled with Monster Hunter.

I mean if this is only used for select games...and it comes bundled (or bundled with monster hunter at the least) it might work out...

I'd say this is a way to update the 3ds design to keep the early adopters in the game.
Otherwise a redesigned 3ds will render all the existing owners really pissed off.
So we will see a new 3ds on the market, probably by Christmas and the old one going the way of the Touchpad.

    So, whose buying a 3ds v2?
Who is queueing up with me?
    Anyone?
    Anyone?
    Nobody at all?

Bugger, how long til they exit the hardware market now?
Lots of pressure not to do a 'cube on the WiiU, release great hardware that no one wants.

It really is mental to think that after such a successful last generation, Nintendo could bugger so much up with this one.

They've even fecked up on the names. I think '3DS' was just too obvious a title to pass up..but as for Wii U. That's unforgivable.

I mean come on, with modern consoles you have to show that it's a step up from the previous one. (stupid as it is).

Even 'Wii 2' would have been better than that. They could have stuck to their stupid current branding and called it 'Wii too' or 'Wii two' or something else daft. It still would have shown that it's a real successor to the Wii rather than a Wii 1.5.

From the looks of it though it pretty much exists only for monster hunter.

It took Monster Hunter to get a proper dual stick, multi shoulder button controller for Wii so no surprise there!

Looks like a piece of crap though. I'm sure it functions fine, but it really is a desperate attempt to fix a design that was unfortunately outdated before it was even released.

To create a new improved 3ds may well be as simple as a new main board and lower inner panel, to support a second circle pad.
The outer aspect of the machine need not change at sll.
If they have a clip on C pad already be sure they have it all planning already.
And seeing as there is a pretty limited game catalog on the thing it'd be relatively easy to add that with the necessary firmware update anyhow.
So, in Japan at least, I can see a redesigned 3ds by Jesus Day or else the Vita will eat it alive.

(and yes Vita also has Monster Hunter...but 3ds has pokemon! and mario/mario kart!)

I know that Mario, Kart and Pokemon are great but I would hope we can expect a little more than the usual suspects from this console.

    3DS+, the new console design.
I made it lol. But this is what I expect really.
They'll remove the ridge on the touch screen too, as it scratches the upper screen.
The things added to the first side picture are the extra shoulder buttons.

    Looks good, right? :p

New Smash Bros, a new New Super Mario Bros game, new Zelda, so how cool is that or rather how low our expectations.
So far the big games news has been new variants of existing games on older systems.
What about new Kojima games, new Suda 51 games, something fresh from Sega.
    Wheres COD on the 3ds?
    What about Battlefield 3?
Come on, demand more from a capable machine or we will wind up with the first handheld own goal by Ninty, not counting the Virtual Boy.

Couldn't agree more. There is only so much mario anyone can take. I had my fill several years ago.
Demand more from Nintendo than the usual rehashed safe bets.

Wern't you giving out about ports a few posts back :p

Completely agree with you, more than enough time has elapsed, Nintendo has the ability ten times over, but nothings adding up.

The 3DS - "Look what's coming out for it!!!" yawn. Its whats out now, or very nearly now that matters...six months down the road just doesn't excuse the current mess.

Ah yes, the staring at the leaflet that came In the last game casing you bought.
It can be emotional in one of a series of ways...
1: You feel happy at seeing all the new games coming out in the near future.
2: You see the leaflet and realise that you have been looking at the same leaflet for the last bunch of releases, depressing!
3: You realise you own them all already and there is nothing else on the way except maybe a kart racing game featuring the cast of Shrek.

Pretty soon we'll see a post here in the Bargain Alerts, with a user from Harvey Normans telling us to get down there quick, the 3DS is selling for 150 euro!
    Oh, wait.....
    Bugger!

It is telling that the DSiXL is more expensive than the 3DS.
Maybe the redesign will be more on the scale of the XL console, a larger screen may be more comfortable to use, and give ignorant potential buyers the illusion of getting more for their money!

3DS:XL, you heard it here first folks!

Oh, they'll probably throw in a 2nd Circle pad, a touch pad on the back, a cup holder and a scanner for reading your credit card, to ease the siphoning of your bank account!

Can't help but feel the 2nd circle pad will be used with the WiiU in mind. Can't say i've been bowled over by the games announced at the TGS.

    right...

i will get my fun out of 3ds and then just wait for vita...

i might have jumped on 3ds quite to soon, but i really wanted some of those cool ds games i newer played. now i am a bit upset, but i still dont think it is wasted money as i really really love chrono trigger, advanced wars, zelda oot ( newer played original), castlevania: order of ecclesia, proffesor layton etc...

can anyone sum up, what were those awesome shockingly good games revealed on 14th?

I wonder why they don't have the 3DS slot into it instead, so that the circle pad would lie just under the D pad rather than off centre to the right.

Is "Crown 3DS" the final nail in the coffin now?
3DS' been hacked not for homebrew or anything somewhat legit, but hacked to play one 3DS game at a time.
Sad, I can't see 3rd parties sticking around too long after this.

Wow, that didn't take long. Thats a real shame, because as you mentioned above...3rd party support was already flaky...this certainly won't help.

Why anyone would want a flashcart for it this soon is beyond me...if they really had to release one, it should have been kept under wraps until the console was somewhat established. At least another year was needed.

This is purely an oppurtunity to make money though, & those kind of hackers care not about a consoles lifespan.

Why would the team behind Crown show their hand so early anyway? Looks a LONG way from being a retail product so what is to gain? 99$ in pre orders for a product that may never appear possibly.

    I hope it fails.

The lesson here is it can be done, & where today there is one group who has made progress against the system security, tomorrow there will be two...by next week there will be ten etc etc. It will become a race to see who gets the first product out there, because whoever does will make the most money. Coming up to the holiday season too, in terms of flash cart logic, there's no better time than then to get a product out there.

Sad indeed it has come so soon, & while its not entirely complete, I'd say the hard bit is done.

Could they not have just taken out the Splinter Cell innerds from its casing, and attached a load of wires to it, to make it seem like a flash cart. Thats my hope anyway, just a fancy fake? (Obviously I don't know what I am talking about though and could be missing something!!!)

It's possible too, just too early to tell. Fishing for pre-orders & then dissappear could be the order of the day. Or it could be legit, time will tell

Call me when the 3DS actually has some great games to offer. Or just another Zelda. I'm a sucker for Zelda.

But yeah the whole 3DS launch has been a bit of a disaster hasn't it? First people in Japan thought their DSs could run 3DS games because they thought it was just another DS version and then everyone realised "wait, there aren't any good games yet" and now they're redesigning the control layout on the fly with add-ons. That said I do like the slight controller-shape this accessory has and it might make playing the damn thing more comfortable. Kid Icarus looks good too. I was always planning on getting a 3DS at some point but with what Nintendo are doing right now I'm happy to wait until the mess is sorted out and the price has dropped further.

I don't think they're even trying the hide behind the "homebrew" thing this time, which is lame to me.
All I want is 3D youtube or something.
And if Nintendo won't give it to us, I'd like an alternative.

Agreed, but until there's a method to run homwbrew, you won't have it. If this is real, I'd like to see if could be made for video content etc like yourself.

Again though if it's real, happening this soon will not help matters by any stretch of the imagination.

I would have preferred a softmod that region free's the device but a flashcart will do. from the sounds of it it can only load one game at a time like older gb flashcarts so if it does come to market I doubt we'll see piracy on the scale of the ds.

Nobody is going to release a $99 device that only holds one rom. It's more a proof of concept than anything. Again if it's real, it will become a development race & where there's a will there's a way.

If this one can only hold one, its rival will hold 5, & its rivals rival will hold 10 etc etc.

Mind you, one that would hold five would basically hold every decent 3DS game with room to spare :p
