How do you write your numbers?

1: No-messing straight down line or a fancy little hat or even a European-style swishy bit that's as long as the body?

2: Not much room for manoeuvre but some prefer to loop a little before finising off the horizontal line

3: Two curly bits or an angular top and roundy bottom?

4: Closed, like an A or open at the top?

5: Do you start or finish with the hat?

6: Straight line down or curled, like an upside-down E?

    7. Bar across the middle or no?

8: Do you make the ends meet or not?

9: Circle and a straight line down or a single swirl?

0: Some bizarre twist on the classic circle/oval?

^^ Just like that except with a horizontal bar in the middle of the 7

1: I've gone fancy with this, it basically looks exactly like the one written here
    2: Normal
3: Angular top, and for some reason, I always bring the loop below the line like a proper descender
4: Open. And if I'm in a rush, I go from the horizontal to the vertical in one move, so it ends up looking like a crooked y
    5: Loop then hat
    6: Upside down e
7: I only add the horizontal line if I'm writing for other people to distinguish it from 1, even though my 1's look nothing like the 7 now
8: Ends haven't met since primary school, who has that sort of time?
9: Loop then vertical line, all in one move
0: Again, ends don't meet, and if I'm writing for other people, I sometimes put a diagonal line in the middle, like a computery Ø.

    7. Bar across the middle or no? Bar

8: Do you make the ends meet or not? Sometimes

9: Circle and a straight line down or a single swirl? Circle and a straight line down

1: Depends on the audience. I had Spanish and German lecturers in college and I used to write my ones the way they did. Otherwise, it's a vertical bar. Occasionally, I'll write them as they appear at the start of this paragraph.

    2: <----Just like that.

    3: Ditto

    4: Open

5: Vertical bar first, then the bottom loop, finally topping off with the top hat.

    6: <--- Just like that.

    7. Bar, of course. You can't leave the bar out!

8: Do you make the ends meet or not? I try to!

9: Start at the top of the vertical bar and draw a counterclockwise circle, then a straight vertical bar to finish.

0: I'm afraid mine look like Ohs. :o

1: No-messing straight down line or a fancy little hat or even a European-style swishy bit that's as long as the body? straight down, no messing

2: Not much room for manoeuvre but some prefer to loop a little before finising off the horizontal line a little loop at the angle

3: Two curly bits or an angular top and roundy bottom? the first one

4: Closed, like an A or open at the top? open top

5: Do you start or finish with the hat? finish

6: Straight line down or curled, like an upside-down E? straight line but at an angle

    7. Bar across the middle or no? no bar, that's extra effort

8: Do you make the ends meet or not? i can afford the ink????

9: Circle and a straight line down or a single swirl? straight line down

0: Some bizarre twist on the classic circle/oval? i put a nipple in it

    something like that

didn't cross my sevens until 5 years ago. Polish girl i was working with always took it as a One at first glance without it being crossed. easier to change rather then re-educate

I put a diagonal line through my zeroes to differentiate them from the letter O. If you can imagine my zeroes as a clock the line runs from the 2 o’clock position to the 7 o’clock position.

I also change my 4 from this one -> 4 to the open topped version as the mood takes me.

Very sloppily in general. Even I can't generally tell the difference between my 4s 5s and 9s at the best of times.... A problem when you study engineering

1: like a longer apostrophy that doesn't really reach the line a bit like '
2: <--- nothing like that. Mine are like a z that got its corners slightly rounded
3: bit of a hybrid, flat on top but with a softer transition to the next bit (which is VERY short). Kinda looks like a back to front c with a line on the top
    4: Looks like L with a subscript L, <-- bit like that
5: Like my version of 4 rotated clockwise by 45 degrees
6: like a back to front minim in italics
    7: crossed
    8: open at the top
    9: like my 4
    0: o

I cross my sevens, and sometimes my fives look like an S. sometimes my 9's will be open, as does my 0's. I actually can't write straight, so my writing has a slant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

    I write mine like this:

    11/10
    5/4
    11/8
    6/4
    13/8
    7/4
    15/8
    2/1
    9/4
    5/2
    11/4
    3/1
    10/3
    7/2
    4/1
    9/2
    5/1
    11/2

    etc etc :P

I can't find any consistent pattern in my own numbers - pretty much every digit has a few different variations.

Ooh I quite like this thread. Very original. :)
1: No-messing straight down line or a fancy little hat or even a European-style swishy bit that's as long as the body?
    Just a straight line.

2: Not much room for manoeuvre but some prefer to loop a little before finising off the horizontal line
I don't bother with that loop.

3: Two curly bits or an angular top and roundy bottom?
All curly. Don't like 3's with flat bits on top/

4: Closed, like an A or open at the top?
    Open at top.

5: Do you start or finish with the hat?
Finish with the hat. That's the way I was thought in school so I've kept it up.

6: Straight line down or curled, like an upside-down E?
Wat sort of heathen puts a straight line in their 6? That form of 6 may be acceptable for digital watches and stuff but certainly not when written down. Curly all the way.

    7. Bar across the middle or no?
    No bar.

8: Do you make the ends meet or not?
Yes....otherwise it looks like someone started writing an 8, got lazy and left it unfinished.

9: Circle and a straight line down or a single swirl?
Circle and straight line. Single swirl is too swirly. A good 9 should have a strong, straight vertical tail. Not of this curly swirly malarky.

0: Some bizarre twist on the classic circle/oval?
No, but now that I've noticed how boring my 0's are I'm gonna have to try and improve them somehow....

Had to have another look at that to see what you meant, they do a bit :D

    Its the number that goes against my slant, so it looks oddball against the others. I remember years ago reading up about writing styles and what they're supposed to mean. Even if you don't buy the whole thing, it's interesting reading. I was amused by this one;

"Be wary of the person whose writing sways like the reeds"

Nuh oh. I'm a bad person :pac:

Hmm, when doing maths I always kept letters lower case for algebra/formulas to try and stop any confusion.

    1: No-messing straight down line

2: With a loop, and the line is curved too

    3: Two curly bits

4: open at the top, angled shorter vertical line, curves as it crosses the second horizontal line

    5: start with the hat

6: curled, like an upside-down (elongated, and straightened) E

    7. Not always a bar across the middle (depends on how sloppy it looks), but usually a very small vertical line at the left hand side of the top line

8: Do you make the ends meet or not? Yes, but often the end line goes above the start.

9: Circle and a straight line down

0: Some bizarre twist on the classic circle/oval? Is a diagonal line through it considered bizarre?
