Ever walked away from an ATM without taking your money?

Whenever I'd heard of this happening before, I used to always think to myself "How the HELL could anyone manage to do that??"

Well, I've just gone and done it myself. On friday night I withdrew €40 from the ATM. Five minutes later I discovered I no longer had the cash on me. I retraced my steps and searched for about twenty minutes, to no avail. I was really angry with myself. I'd obviously dropped it somewhere, I figured.

Tonight I was checking my online banking, and "ATM Refund" showed up, for €40. I rang my bank, only to discover that yes I had in fact walked away from the ATM without taking my money.

I'm still in awe of my absent-mindedness.

Has it ever happened to you?? Tell me it has!

Would you believe, only today somebody walked away from €500 euro, straight in front of me at the ATM.

Ya :( today. Walked away and left 500e behind me! No sign of it when I went back :(

Never happened to me, but the amount of people who do it is incredible. After 30 seconds its sucked back in, and you'll get refunded. If someone else gets their hands on it before that, its goodbye money!!!

I reckon if you walk away and someone gets it, its your own fault. If i left a wallet full of money on the main street and walked away it would be gone, same thing in my eyes.

I did it once. Walked away and left a 20 behind me. Chap behind was honest enough to let me know. Good guy.

I did it in newry about two years ago, went back and the money was gone, checked my account a few days later and no sign so figured it was taken. Then a few months ago I got a letter from bank of Ireland apologising for a system error and refunding my hundred squids! Happy days!

I've also twice called people to give them their money back after they walked away. One guy left behind a lot of fifties.

Ha Ha, you would be suppriesd how common this is. Never left money in but twice while scutterd drunk Ive left the actual pass card in behind me. Thankfully each time some nice soul returned my card to a branch which in each case the bank returned them via post. You feel stupid but it could be worse.

I recently walked away from quick self service machine in tescos leaving £10 in the change tray until after walking about 100 yards , I realised my absent mindness and quickly returned to find the note still there .

I did once inform a girl who had just walked away from the ATM that her card was still in there .

Yeh my phone rang just as the money came out. Of course it was all his fault for ringing me at the wrong time :pac:

That's gas. I, too, was wary of a few dodgy looking people hanging around at the time.

I guess it's just like anything, once you've done it (used an ATM) a hundred times you don't really think about it anymore and your own actions become automatic - unless, that is, something distracts you and throws you out of step!

I'm actually shocked with myself, but a little comforted to hear it has happened to a lot of you too ;)

Going to have to say I done it myself couple of weeks ago in supervalu clondalkin. Got to the till then notice my €40 was gone. It was half nine in the morning no one else in the shop.

Walk back around the shop but no joy so called the manager. She said she would look at the cctv and to call back in a hour. So a hour later back I go for her to tell me I left in the machine. A few days later it was back in my account. :o

I don't really get how people do this.

I did it on a night out, I was drunk, then I lost my ATM card.

So my mate took me to a Chinese takeaway to cheer me up, so in a pissed off drunken voice I said "Do you do burgers?", the reply of "no" made me say "**** sake" and I ran off to the toilet.

My mate ordered me a chicken and noodle thing. I ate it with a big stupid smile on my face. Was a good night.

Worked in a shop for a few years and you would be surprised the amount of people getting distracted and not taking it back,We had to tell customers that money only stayed out on view for 10 seconds and if not taken it goes back in and refunded to account.

I've got myself into the habit of counting the money when I take it from the ATM so this wouldn't happen to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,435 ✭✭✭solerina

Yeah, did it once, was waiting ages for the money and the card, when the card came out I took it and off I went leaving 80 euro behind me in the machine.....was furious with myself when I realised !!

Happened to me last month - first time ever.

Bad hangover, withdrew €100 and walked away when my card came out. The next person in the queue ran down the street with the money and handed it to me.

Actually did it last year, was on the phone and took my card but left €50. There was a big queue behind me and the money never went back into my account so whoever was next must have just kept it. Pretty low.

I've left 40e beind. Called into AIB, filled in a form and they balance the ATM and if it's over you get it back. If not youre entitled to the CCTV footage of the machine to take a case against whoever stole it! Luckily mine was 'eaten' by the machine so got it back!

  • No, but I've done other stupid things when I had a lot on my mind or just had some bad news. It's quite easily done if your mind is just elsewhere.

Me too, it's a bit like ordering a nice pint and then walking away from it when it's put in front of you.

    How is it possible?

    Just an update folks.

The cctv from the bank has been handed over to the law, they are hoping that whoever picked up the money will hand it in.
Fat chance I suppose :( these scum dont care that they've taken my rent money.

Anyway, there were several people and cars in the vicinity and the thief will be caught as they were seen.:(

Done it myself at an ATM, at a petrol station with 200 euro, went back and it was gone.

The bank will have a record of it. I rang my bank, they said theres a delay built into the ATM where if your moneys not taken, the Atm will swallow it back up and show a profit.

I had to report it, and fill out loads of forms, but eventually that ATM showed up as been in profit, and the bank sent my money back.

€500? I presumed you were joking. Jesus. That kind of money means a lot to lose, unfortunately some people will only see it as ''a win'' and neglect to to think about the repercussions it can have on the person who lost it.

Now usually I'm too cheap to leave money behind me, but my own situation was a little more stupid, stuck in Charles de Gaulle airport at 6am, had no money on me until I realised I still had €40 in my account. Unfortunately ATMs in France often supply the cash after the card, so I walked away, delighted with myself, while some lucky Pierre walked away with my breakfast food money. It's not so much the money that hurts, it's the sickening feeling of stupidity, the feeling that you might as well have set fire to that money for all the good it did.

Happened to me in Barcelona a few years ago! It was the last day of the trip, I had €70 euro left in my pocket which I figured would do me for the day... until I got robbed on the metro!

So went to the ATM to take out another €60, and I'm gonna blame it on the shock, but took my card and walked away without the money! Luckily the lady after me in the queue came running after me with my money!

Bottom line is, Barcelona's got its good guys and its bad guys!

Never left money behind but a good few years ago some ATM machines had a glass panel that used to slide down over the keys and the screen etc. One night langers after the disco I went up to one to get money for a taxi and left my burger down on the ATM machine , a couple seconds after I got the money the glass came back down trapping the burger!!! At the time I thought it was so funny so left it there and went accords the road to see the next lad who used the ATM, in the end we got bored and went home. Can only imagine the next poor old locked sod to trying to get money out and getting a free burger :) how's that for banking customer service? Free burger with every withdrawal.

I often wondered why they got rid of those sliding panels they'd stop a lot of the card skimming crack now !!
