Hi, Im starting my first year in NUIG this september and i booked dunaras village as it was the only one not booked out by the time i booked it as i was expecting to be going to UL. Im going to galway on my own as all my friends are going to different colleges :( Is dunaras nice and good for first years? Also any one else going to dunaras this year?
Thanks in advance for any help :)

Dunaras is quite a ways out from both the university and from town - NUIG is about a 20 minute walk, and add another 5-10 minutes to get to the nightclubs. There are shuttle buses to the university during the day, but even so.

I stayed there a few years ago and travellers used to leave their kids in the central green at weekends, and there were a fair few break-ins as well. I'd have gone with private accommodation closer to town to be honest.

thanks for the info. I thought private accomodation would be a bad idea as i am not going with any friends.

I lived in Dunaras my first year at NUIG. The apts are nice enough but expect slow crap interwebs. It is a bit of a ways out but if you're going directly into town you can take a short cut down shantalla road. All the same, I'd recomend getting a bike. It's definitely worth it if you're living in Dunaras.

Expect lots of first years and lots of international students. The midnight party antics can become tiresome but it's nowhere near as bad as Corrib Village. Consider yourselves lucky that you dodged that bullet.

Same as yourselves I knew nobody in Galway and made loads of friends there in first year.

    Enjoy!

Went up to dunaras today, i wanted to see what the place was like. Paid my first instalment and i must say the appartments are really nice. Got my key and moved in some of my stuff and left again. Moving up properly on friday, not many people up there yet it looked very quiet.

The girl in reception said she thinks one of my room mates has already checked in but there was no sign of anyone so they might have dropped there stuff off and left. No i was not as lucky as you, A twin room to yourself sounds nice :D I was afraid i would miss out by not moving up until friday but the place is pretty dead up there. I hope the weather is better by the weekend for orientation because its not that short a walk.

I moved in the first day I could expecting a week of partying and awesomeness. I however arrived up to a ghost estate. No first years seem to move in till they have to, also there's not much you can do around campus either. You won't have your id card and I'm not sure if they'll let you into the college bar if you don't. I did however meet my best friend in that week of nothingness and we discovered the greatest bars in galway so it's much of a muchness I guess. You'll find that nearly everyone moves up on the Friday. They'll all be in the same boat.

iv a question can you have a friend stay over in dunaras student accom.. im ment to be staying but i dont kno if im allowed or not :/

Not sure if they've changed since i was there, but I believe officially you're supposed to sign them in at the office etc... but they never check. There's no auchwitz style check point at the entrance or anything. Plus I think if you happen to have guests they'd rather not have to go through the paperwork in the office.
