Help - my shorts ride up when I run! What's the solution?

So I have an annoying and slightly embarrassing problem.
I've been running for about a year.
My running shorts "ride up" my inner thighs when I run.
As well as looking terrible, it also affects my stride and upsets my rythm, as I have to pull them down every 30 seconds or so.
Before you ask, I do not have what you would consider terribly fat thighs.
I've tried a few different types of shorts: "race" ones by Nike, with built-in inner briefs, baggy Aldi ones, longer ones etc. to no avail.

Does this happen to anyone else?

    Is there a solution?

Yes, and it used to cause me serious chafing. My solution was to wear compression shorts under my running shorts. Maybe it's something to do with the mechanics of our gait ...

compression shorts + normal shorts = great
Ok costs more but much more comfortable for longer runs compared to any shorts I've tried atleast

Lycra. The answer is always Lycra. You can throw a pair of "modesty" shorts over the Lycra/compression ones if you don't having your bits on show.

I have a pair of Nike with lycra shorts built in.Think they're 7" leg

Suffer from the same plight myself.
Lads from experience can these 2in1 shorts end up putting stress on areas prone to injury like groin/hamstrings etc. ?
Is the fabric in the inner shorts compression material?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

I find them to be the only shorts I can run more than 5 miles and not end up with nappy rash
As for the compression material, I'd say it's more 'tight boxershort' than compression, but it's very comfortable (at least I fnd it so) and I can't see them putting stress anywhere.
I got a pair in Arnotts, if you're close to there you should drop in and have a look. Also, I think I saw them in Champion Sports one day

I use Ronhill Powerstretch shorts. Haven't had an issue with too much pressure on hamstrings etc.

I had the same problem myself. Problem disappeared when I got me some Nike DriFit short shorts. Think they are 4" with a light built in lining.

Thanks everyone for the help and advice.

I will try out a pair of these Nike 7 Inch Tempo 2 in 1 Shorts.

Are wiggle.co.uk reliable as an online seller?

    Thanks,

Yes, they are. I got a 2nd pair a few weeks ago from them. It was less than a week from order to delivery, even with the free postage option. They also do a full black version if you're wary of the loud colours

CWX compression shorts are the business. You can wear them on their own aswell, no need to wear another pair of shorts over them. Skins half tight running shorts are great aswell.

This should never ever be done. If wearing compression shorts have the body confidence to wear just the shorts

Try a smaller size. If your shorts are too big they will ride up. For women you can get short lycra shorts with a slight flare at the leg, really comfy to wear.

    @tunney. Thanks tunney - Male

out of curiosity, why should you never ever wear shorts over compression shorts??

Ok, so I tried a pair of the Nike Tempo shorts.
As people on here indicated, they have a sort of a compression boxer short-like inner lining.

They are an improvement, but do not solve the problem completely. I think the inner lining is not quite long enough.

    Thoughts.....?

I can't see any reason why you shouldn't wear the shorts+compression
combo (my usual running attire). Personally i feel compression shorts
on their own give off a "i'm an international track star" vibe, but hey
    thats just me:pac:

    Have some fvcking confidence :)

Although there are times I don't feel comfortable wearing them. Hammers home the fact that I'm fat and slow and need to avoid cakes (more b@st@rdling cakes in the office today to tempt me)

I'm far too well endowed to wear compression shorts without traumatising little children and sensitive old ladies.

Not sure what next you could do. As suggested, maybe try a pair of compression shorts by themselves ? Or maybe running tights ?

Whats the dig on wearing compression shorts for a Marathon?

The reason I'm asking is because my shorts rise up too and I get chaffing on the inner thighs if its warm and/or very humid

On topic - I run almost all the time in compression shorts. I wear Decathlon's slinky plastic running underwear underneath (like a very light compression boxer). The legs of your typical compression short (Nike, Adidas, whoever) go down far enough to ensure no chafing. Get a pair with a back pocket for gels.

Why would you bother with wearing another pair on top? Maybe if it's very cold, or if you're prone to priapic running syndrome...but most running (baggy) shorts aren't well engineered for wearing compressions underneath, the built in gusset thing gets tangled up.

    Just my 2 cents.

Wow - it doesn't take much for a thread to go off track eh? ;) - sorry, pun intended.

Thanks for that pic Patrick_K - put me right off the dinner!
@ brownian, I had to look up that particular affliction, thankfully I don't suffer from it (yet) :)

Back on topic now. I think I'm going to try a pair of Compression shorts.

As I mentioned, I'm new to running. All I have is ordinary Nike, Adidas running shorts and the new Nike Tempo ones.

Where would I find compression shorts? Do the big sports chains have them?
Elverys, Marathon, Lifestyle? This will be my first pair, so I'd prefer a bricks and mortar store where I can try them on, rather than buying online.

Stupid question, but how tight are these meant to be worn?

Elverys might, but Marathon and Lifestyle are only good for football jerseys :) You could also try Amphibian King or Runways

I wear these under my shorts. They prevent chafing but the shorts still ride up between the thighs, but it's not uncomfortable anyway.

Cheers RayCun, none of those 2 stores near me.
Anything in the Limerick or Kerry area?

John Buckley Sports in Cork? They're the closest I've heard mentioned.

Buy em online. They're stretchy by nature. Whatever your jocks size is should do you.

Elverys should have them if it's a big enough store. I know the one in Galway stocks both Canterbury and Under Armour. Nike also do a long leg tight fitting base layer short. Expect to pay €60 to €70 for Under Armour though, the Canterbury ones are around €35 if memory serves me correctly. Keep an eye on Lidl offers though, got a pair there cheap enough but they sell out quick.

I bought a pair of Adidas 7" shorts with the inbuilt tight under layer and they can be annoying, after washing it usually takes half a mile of pulling them up before they stop trying to turn into ankle warmers.

Thanks dunner - 15 Euro is great value - picked up a smaller size in these 2-in-1 shorts, and it seems to have done the trick.

Thanks for the heads-up on JJB sale.
