I'm looking for advice on a project i'm debating starting.
An M40A3 replica in .243 , but not absolutely true to spec as budget wont allow this unfortunatley!

Would I be better off to buy a new SPS R700 and scrap it or bide my time and try to track down a short action and barrel/mag etc minus the stock ??

    Thnaks in advance lads :D

So you're looking to build one in .243 as opposed to .308?

Whats your budget? Would you prefer full build, and how closely do you want it to resemble the original.

You're looking for a Remmy Short action, barrel with 1:10 twist (or so to allow for the heavier .243 rounds as opposed to a 1:12 for the lighter .308 rounds), McMillan A4 stock or similar clone.

I'm going with .243 just because its my preferred cartidge due fairing flat trajectory and selection of ammo.

As for budget, I'm not looking to put the schmidt and bender on it and blue print the action/mod the bolt etc. But I will be getting the A4 stock with adj. butt and cheek piece from mcmfamily.com if they'll ship to europe and would like to end up with 24-26'' heavy barrel action (1:10 twist if possible) and a match trigger so I'll spend what I need to without going nuts.

A clone as opposed an exact replica.

    Help and advice much appreciated

You d pick up a .17 rem very cheap now 2nd hand. All you want is the action so you can open up the boltface or get a replacement bolt to suit.
As for barrels theres not much ****e out there they all shoot.
Trigger wise jewel are the business, timney are good, I have their tactical trigger on two of my rifles and they can be adjusted down to couple ounces and break nice and crisp. Edi Graff is goin making his own version of McMillan tactical stocks(I think) I have one in Fergal Whites for a 308 he's putting together for me and it's the biz, so you have option of quality stocks on ur own doorsteps if you don't want to get one in from states.

How similar are these versions of the mcmillan A4 stock to the original mcmillan?
And what kinda money would be involved?
Would it be possible to get a number for this lad?
    Cheers

    If it were me then i would be looking at;
    • Remmy action
    • 26" medium/light profile barrel
    • A4 Clone stock
    • Tactical bolt knob
    • Glass/pillar bedding
    • Rifle Basix Trigger
Possibly run you around the €2400 - €2600 mark. Although don't hold me to that price its a guesstimate.
